Detailed notes
## Background Published on YouTube by Scott Taipale on March 31, 2017, this video captures a rare doubleheader crawling along the ND&W Railway (formerly the Maumee and Western Railroad) on the historical Wabash Railroad's 5th District. According to the description, the footage highlights a residual pocket of track that suffered decades of deferred maintenance prior to acquisition and rehabilitation work by Pioneer RailCorp, humorously contrasting the title's claim of 'blasting' with the train's actual creeping pace.
## TL;DR The video documents Pioneer Industrial Railway units PREX 1603 and PREX 3054 navigating a severely degraded stretch of shortline track at walking speed. Rather than speeding down the line, the heavy locomotives cautiously ease across undulating rails, sunken joint bars, and weathered ties to maintain stability. The entire filmed movement relies on trackside observational footage, focusing on the mechanical struggle and physical deflection of the track structure. Over several minutes of continuous operation, the consist safely clears the localized pocket of deteriorated roadbed.
## Atmosphere & style The video has a gritty, patient, and quietly suspenseful atmosphere as viewers watch heavy locomotives carefully balance across noticeably uneven, warped rails. In the complete absence of narration or spoken commentary, the scene is dominated by the hypnotic, rhythmic ringing of the locomotive bell, intermittent chime-like tones, and the mechanical clatter of wheels grinding over loose joints. It feels grounded and industrial, conveying a tense fascination with the physical limits of aging rail infrastructure.

## Detailed walkthrough ### [00:00](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9X2A2f6E5DI&t=0s) Locomotives Traversing the Deferred Trackage
The footage captures a doubleheader movement along the ND&W Railway (formerly the Maumee and Western Railroad, or MAW), operating over the historical Wabash Railroad’s 5th District. Power for the train is provided by Pioneer Industrial Railway units PREX 1603 in the lead followed by PREX 3054. While the title humorously characterizes the movement as “blasting down bad track,” the sequence documents roughly six minutes of the consist cautiously creeping and crawling along a heavily deteriorated pocket of line where maintenance had been deferred for decades prior to Pioneer RailCorp taking over operations and rehabbing key sections.
Throughout this initial run, the audio environment is dominated by the mechanical and ambient sounds of the slow-moving train rather than spoken dialogue. The soundtrack features the steady cadence of the locomotive bell ringing as the consist negotiates the uneven, undulating rails, accompanied by background mechanical hums, intermittent chime-like ringing tones, and trackside ambient noise.
- Consist power: PREX 1603 leading PREX 3054 - Territory: Former Wabash Railroad 5th District / ND&W Railway (Maumee and Western) - Line operator context: Acquired by Pioneer RailCorp following decades of deferred maintenance - Notable operational element: Rare doubleheader appearance, noted as only the third time a pair had been captured together on this line
[05:00](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9X2A2f6E5DI&t=300s) Crawling Through the Residual Bad Track Pocket
The second portion of the passage continues following the paired locomotives as they ease through the remaining stretch of unimproved track. The locomotives proceed at walking pace to maintain stability across the dipping joint bars and weathered ties.
The audio profile remains focused on the locomotive's warning bell ringing steadily over the rhythmic clatter of steel wheels on deteriorated rail joints. The passage concludes as the train clears the localized pocket of rough track and completes the filmed segment.

## Video description PREX 1603 leading PREX 3054 blasts down the former Wabash Railroad's 5th District! Lol actually I condensed 6 minutes of the train crawling down the track! This is only the third time I've gotten a pair on one of their trains so I was pleased to see them. The line was most recently the Maumee and Western Railroad (MAW) before being purchased by Pioneer RailCorp. Maintenance was deferred for decades on this stretch of track. Pioneer has done a great job rehabbing the worst parts but some pockets like this still exist.
