Detailed notes

## Background Published on YouTube by Movieclips on August 11, 2015, this clip features a scene from the 1999 comedy film Office Space titled "Did You Get the Memo?" The page description highlights programmer Peter Gibbons (Ron Livingston) being grilled by his superiors at Initech for failing to attach the correct cover sheet to his TPS report.

## TL;DR At Initech, Peter Gibbons receives a passive-aggressive cubicle visit from vice president Bill Lumbergh, who reprimands him for not attaching the new cover sheet to his TPS reports. Even though Peter points out that he has the memo and the documents do not ship until the following day, Lumbergh dismisses his explanation and insists on resending the guidance. Peter then attempts to ask his coworker Milton to lower his radio volume, only to be met with an anxious defense of office listening privileges. Immediately afterward, another supervisor, Dom Portwood, stops by Peter's desk to deliver the exact same redundant reprimand about the cover sheet.

## Atmosphere & style The scene establishes an excruciating, soul-crushing atmosphere of corporate monotony driven by passive-aggressive managerial jargon and stifling cubicle walls. Lumbergh's low-energy, patronizing drawl contrasts with Peter's quiet, trapped exasperation, evoking the familiar dread of workplace bureaucracy. Watching the exchange feels intensely claustrophobic and absurd, as robotic corporate repetition completely overrides basic human communication.

## Detailed walkthrough ### [00:02](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jsLUidiYm0w&t=2s) Lumbergh’s Visit and the TPS Report Cover Sheet

The workday at Initech begins with vice president Bill Lumbergh strolling into Peter Gibbons's cubicle holding his signature coffee mug to deliver a passive-aggressive critique. Lumbergh opens with his trademark low-energy greeting, noting that they have a problem because Peter apparently failed to attach one of the new cover sheets to his TPS reports. Peter immediately apologizes and admits he simply forgot, reaching down to grab the policy document from his desk to demonstrate that he is fully aware of the requirement. Peter explains that because the reports are not scheduled to ship out until tomorrow, the oversight has already been caught in plenty of time and poses no actual disruption to the office workflow.

Rather than acknowledging that the issue is entirely harmless and already handled, Lumbergh brushes right past Peter's explanation with condescending corporate detachment. He insists on reiterating the rule as though Peter had never heard it, offering to send him an additional copy of the guidance he already holds in his hands. Lumbergh leaves Peter in exasperation, declaring, “Yeah, if you could just go ahead and make sure you do that from now on, that would be great.” Without waiting for a real resolution, Lumbergh casually drifts off to micromanage another nearby worker.

- Lumbergh identifies the sole infraction as Peter omitting the newly mandated cover sheet on his TPS reports before distribution. - Peter confirms the batch is not shipping out until tomorrow, meaning the correction requires zero operational delay. - Lumbergh ignores Peter holding up the physical document and promises to deliver another duplicate copy of the memo anyway.

[01:03](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jsLUidiYm0w&t=63s) Milton’s Radio and the Redundant Reprimand

Seeking a moment of peace in the cramped cubicle farm, Peter leans over the partition to ask his timid, murmuring coworker Milton Waddams if he could turn down his desk radio just a bit. Milton immediately becomes defensive, clutching his grievance and citing previous agreements with management regarding personal privileges in the office. Peter tries to soften the request by framing it as an informal personal favor rather than a company rule, but Milton launches into a detailed justification about office fairness. Milton explains his logic: “Well I told Bill that if Sandra is going to listen to her headphones while she's filing, then I should be able to listen to the radio while I'm collating, so I don't see why I should have to turn down the radio.” Defeated by Milton's escalating agitation, Peter backs off completely and tells him to go ahead and enjoy listening at a reasonable volume, while Milton mutters that his permitted listening window is from 9:00 to 11:00.

No sooner has Peter returned to his desk than another supervisor, Dom Portwood, ambles into his cubicle to bring up the exact same clerical error Lumbergh just addressed. Peter attempts to cut the conversation short by explaining that Bill has already talked to him, that he possesses the memo, and that he has already corrected the paperwork. Dom nevertheless recites the identical corporate script word-for-word, completely deaf to the fact that the problem has already been rectified. Emphasizing the company's mindless procedural repetition, Dom concludes, “So if you could go ahead and try to remember to do that from now on, that'd be great, all right?”

- Milton justifies his radio playback by comparing his collating duties to Sandra listening to headphones while filing. - Milton insists management approved his radio privileges specifically between the hours of 9:00 and 11:00. - Dom Portwood serves as the second supervisor to confront Peter over the exact same cover sheet within a matter of minutes. - Peter points out that the mistake happened only once and has already been resolved, yet still receives the scripted managerial reprimand.

CLIP DESCRIPTION: Peter (Ron Livingston) gets grilled by his bosses for not having the right cover sheet on his T.P.S. report.

FILM DESCRIPTION: Peter Gibbons (Ron Livingston) is a computer programmer working for Initech in Houston. Every day, he and his friends Samir (Ajay Naidu) and Michael Bolton (David Herman as not THAT Michael Bolton), suffer endless indignities and humiliations in their soulless workspace from their soulless boss, Bill Lumbergh (Gary Cole). For Peter, stuck in his cookie-cutter apartment with paper-thin walls and IKEA furniture, every day is worse than the one before it -- so every day is the worst of his life. To cap it off, Initech has hired a pair of "efficiency experts" to downsize the company. One Friday night, Peter's soon to be ex-girlfriend Anne (Alexandra Wentworth) forces him to go to an occupational hypnotherapist to relieve work stress. While Peter is under hypnosis, the therapist keels over and dies. As he never snaps out of his hypnotic state, Peter has a new outlook on life. If something annoys him, he just ignores it or walks away from it. He is completely relaxed and enjoying life for the first time in a long time. On Monday, Peter skips work and sleeps in. He gets up for lunch and drives down to a restaurant next to his office and asks the waitress he's had a crush on, Joanna (Jennifer Aniston), on a date. When Peter stops into the office to pick up his organizer, he's called in to talk to the efficiency experts. Relaxed and friendly, Peter charms them as he describes everything wrong with the office, including his boss. Even as Peter now appears at work only as the mood strikes him, the experts decide he's management material and give him a promotion even as they lay off the hardworking Samir and Michael. Peter then convinces his friends to exact revenge on Initech based upon an idea from Superman III. Not everything works out quite as planned. Office Space originated from writer/director Mike Judge's first animated short of the same name, created in 1991. The short was about Milton (reproduced in the film by Stephen Root), a damaged office drone whose complaints and threats about his sufferings go unheeded.
