## Detailed walkthrough ### [00:04](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j4OduqrrSFo&t=4s) Campaigning on the Automated Abundance Economy

Zoltan Istvan opens his address by outlining the central themes of his work: the sweeping impact of artificial intelligence on human society, the economic necessity of universal basic income, and the dawn of what he terms the "automated abundance economy." Reflecting on his recent 12-month campaign for Governor of California, he candidly notes that while he did not secure the Democratic nomination, the race provided a massive public platform to promote bold, unconventional policies. Throughout a year on the campaign trail, Istvan advocated for state-supported domestic robots, guaranteed income, and a fundamental re-evaluation of the American Dream.

Visiting university campuses during his campaign underscored the urgency of these ideas. Looking at his own daughter, who is preparing for college applications in a year or two, Istvan expresses deep concern over what young graduates will face when machine intelligence becomes capable of automating white-collar and professional jobs. While other candidates occasionally touch on technology, Istvan positions himself as an unapologetic futurist championing a "Star Trek era"—one focused on space exploration and pushing past traditional biological limitations through radical technological innovation.

- Istvan completed a 12-month campaign for Governor of California centered on futurist policy. - The platform championed Universal Basic Income (UBI), domestic home robotics, and moving society into a post-scarcity, post-labor economy. - The core political challenge is preparing the next generation for an economy where AI replaces most traditional professional career paths.

[01:51](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j4OduqrrSFo&t=111s) The Approaching Singularity, Oxford Ethics, and a Landmine Epiphany

The discussion turns to the technological singularity—the threshold where artificial intelligence surpasses the human brain's ability to comprehend it. Citing a recent statement from Elon Musk predicting the arrival of this era within 18 months, Istvan argues that machine intelligence exceeding human capability within 18 to 24 months is a genuine possibility. Despite the magnitude of this shift, neither Donald Trump nor mainstream Democratic leadership possesses any framework for governing through it. Istvan compares current skepticism to attitudes a decade ago, when the concept of interacting daily with conversational systems like ChatGPT or relying on AI to solve complex mathematical problems sounded completely absurd.

Istvan shares the personal turning point that led him down this path. While working as a journalist for *National Geographic*, he had a near-death experience when he almost stepped on an active landmine, surviving only because his guide shoved him out of harm's way. That harrowing brush with mortality reoriented his life toward radical life extension, philosophy, and transhumanism—the study and practice of using cutting-edge technology to upgrade the human species. After completing a graduate degree in AI ethics and philosophy at the University of Oxford, he authored the bestselling philosophical novel *The Transhumanist Wager*, which propelled him into public life and political races aimed at injecting scientific methodology into governance.

- Elon Musk and leading AI researchers estimate artificial superintelligence could arrive within 18 to 24 months. - Istvan’s shift to transhumanism was triggered by surviving an active landmine while reporting for *National Geographic*. - Political debates continue to ignore AI, even though technological governance represents the single most consequential issue of the modern era.

[03:31](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j4OduqrrSFo&t=211s) Transhumanism, Neural Interfaces, and Body Upgrades

Delving deeper into transhumanism, Istvan explains that artificial intelligence will not merely exist as an external tool on computer screens; it will eventually be integrated directly into the human body. He points to companies like Elon Musk’s Neuralink and peer biotechnology firms in California that are developing direct neural interfaces. Istvan predicts that within five years, presentations and speeches will be transmitted straight into audience members' minds, noting that current neural implants can already transmit the contents of an entire book directly to a user's brain without requiring physical screens or keystrokes.

Physical augmentation represents the next stage of human competitiveness. Transhumanism encompasses replacing fragile biological limbs with high-performance robotic arms and legs, as well as biological enhancement. Istvan references his involvement in the early operations of the Enhanced Games—which recently held major events in Las Vegas—where athletes utilize pharmacological and technological enhancements to push human performance beyond natural limits. In this emerging paradigm, upgrading human biology becomes essential for staying relevant alongside automated systems.

- Neural interfaces are advancing rapidly, already demonstrating the ability to stream textual data directly into the brain. - Physical augmentation includes advanced prosthetics, cybernetic limbs, and performance-enhancing compounds showcased in initiatives like the Enhanced Games. - The boundary between human biology and machine intelligence is rapidly dissolving.

[05:49](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j4OduqrrSFo&t=349s) The Shifting Horizon of Futurism and the Three-Pillared Economy

Futurism itself has been forced to adapt to exponential change. Istvan observes that futurists once comfortably offered ten-year projections, but looking ahead to 2036 has become virtually impossible due to the combined acceleration of AI, robotics, and quantum computing. Most technologists can now only reliably forecast two to five years ahead. With machine intelligence poised to outmatch human intellectual performance in the immediate future, society must urgently answer how humans will live and find purpose.

```mermaid flowchart LR accTitle: The Three Pillars of the Automated Abundance Economy subgraph Pillars["Automated Abundance Economy"] P1["1. Guaranteed Income / AI Dividend"] P2["2. Ubiquitous Home Robotics"] P3["3. Reimagining the American Dream"] end P1 --> Outcome["Human Flourishing, Leisure, & Social Stability"] P2 --> Outcome P3 --> Outcome ```
To preserve human relevance, dignity, and quality of life in a post-labor world, Istvan outlines his core framework: the **Automated Abundance Economy**. This model is designed to sustain human civilization even if AI captures the vast majority of traditional jobs. It rests on three foundational pillars: 1. **Universal Basic Income (UBI):** Establishing an unconditional baseline financial safety net. 2. **Domestic Robotics:** Deploying physical automation directly into households to eliminate mundane labor. 3. **Reimagining the American Dream:** Transforming cultural expectations away from lifelong wealth accumulation and toward creative leisure.
---
[07:45](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j4OduqrrSFo&t=465s) Pillar 1: Universal Basic Income and Preventing Social Revolt
Istvan emphasizes that he championed Universal Basic Income long before Andrew Yang popularized the policy during the 2020 presidential primary. Regardless of whether the mechanism is labeled UBI, an "AI dividend," or a "federal land dividend," some form of universal wealth distribution is an absolute mathematical necessity. If automation displaces millions of knowledge workers and physical laborers without a replacement income stream, societal instability is inevitable.
The driving rationale behind basic income is simple: mass unemployment without economic relief leads directly to civil unrest. If citizens are permanently locked out of the labor market and unable to afford food and housing, "you're going to revolt." To prevent systemic collapse, governments and the billionaire class must construct an economic floor. Istvan urges voters to support political leaders who grasp the interplay between artificial intelligence and guaranteed income to soften the inevitable wave of job losses over the next five to ten years.
- Istvan supported UBI prior to the 2020 Democratic primaries, framing it as an essential stabilizer against technological unemployment. - Alternate structural models include state-issued AI dividends or distributions funded by federal land and resource leasing. - A baseline distribution mechanism is necessary to prevent widespread poverty and civil revolt as automation sweeps through the workforce.
[09:09](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j4OduqrrSFo&t=549s) Pillar 2: Domestic Robots in Every Household
The second pillar focuses on democratizing physical robotics. During his gubernatorial campaign, Istvan proposed that the state government help lease, lend, or sell a domestic humanoid robot to every household within five years. Just as municipalities build roads and water infrastructure to improve daily life, public policy should help families offload domestic chores to automated systems.
Commercial momentum is already building in this space. Istvan notes that startups in San Francisco are already advertising robot cleaning services deployed to private homes at $30 an hour. While consumer floor models at standard tech expos remain rudimentary, experimental prototypes inside Silicon Valley labs possess extraordinary hand dexterity. Istvan expects home robots priced between $15,000 and $20,000 to enter the consumer market within the next year, with the dexterity to wash delicate dishes without breaking them arriving in six to eight months. Beyond chores, these robots offer critical safety capabilities, including built-in carbon monoxide monitoring, smoke detection, nursery monitoring, and hazard identification.
- Proposal for government-backed programs to lease or distribute domestic robots to every household within a 5-year timeframe. - San Francisco companies are already piloting residential robot cleaning services at approximately $30 per hour. - Consumer domestic humanoids are projected to enter the $15,000 to $20,000 price range within 12 months, featuring multi-hazard environmental sensors.
[10:54](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j4OduqrrSFo&t=654s) Pillar 3: Reimagining the American Dream for a Post-Labor Era
The third and most culturally contentious pillar requires redefining what it means to live a meaningful life when machines outperform humans across physical dexterity and cognitive tasks. Human labor cannot compete with robots that operate 24/7, never suffer workplace injuries, and carry no legal liability. Consequently, society must abandon the traditional doctrine that personal value and success are defined solely by hard work and financial accumulation.
Istvan acknowledges that this proposal alienated voters during his campaign because "a world without working is something that most of us can't even imagine." However, international economic competition guarantees this transition—if Western nations slow down automation, competitors like China will continue deploying robots at full speed. Because younger generations face an economic landscape where traditional upward mobility is broken, society must construct an economy where people are free to pursue art, philosophy, music, and leisure without the requirement to remain economically "functional" revenue generators.
- The conventional American Dream—achieving wealth through endless hard labor—is increasingly out of reach for younger generations amid automation. - Geopolitical pressure and competition with China prevent any slowdown in the development and deployment of robotics. - A post-work society shifts human purpose from functional economic utility to art, higher education, scientific curiosity, and leisure.
[13:01](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j4OduqrrSFo&t=781s) AI-Driven Radical Longevity and the Star Trek Future
Istvan connects the economics of automation directly to the biotech revolution occurring in life extension. AI is accelerating drug discovery and synthesizing novel molecules, setting the stage for lifespans to extend far beyond the standard 80 years to 120, 200, or even 300 years. If radical longevity arrives without an automated abundance economy and strong social safety nets, extending human life will result in centuries of economic misery rather than flourishing.
Equipped with life extension, basic income, and automated abundance, humanity can finally transition toward a civilizational model reminiscent of *Star Trek*. Istvan encourages audiences to look past short-term commercial software, cloud databases, and narrow enterprise tools, urging them instead to focus on the grand trajectory of humanity over the next 500 to 1,000 years, including space colonization and deep scientific exploration.
- AI-driven molecular synthesis and biotechnology are laying the groundwork to extend human lifespans to 120–300 years. - Radical longevity necessitates durable economic safety nets to ensure extended lifespans remain dignified and secure. - The ultimate objective of transhumanism and abundance economics is enabling humanity to explore space and transition into a post-scarcity era.
[14:31](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j4OduqrrSFo&t=871s) Superintelligent AI Risks, Silicon Valley Bunkers, and Political Inaction
Istvan shifts his tone to issue a stark warning regarding artificial superintelligence (ASI). Describing an intimate gathering of roughly 80 elite AI engineers and founders at PayPal co-founder Max Levchin's mansion in San Francisco, Istvan recalls top technologists predicting the arrival of superintelligence—systems 10 to 100 times smarter than human beings—within 18 months. Shockingly, many of these leading architects of the technology are privately buying underground survival bunkers to insulate themselves from potential fallout.
Istvan stresses his moral obligation to sound the alarm: beneath the lucrative "gold rush" of commercial AI lies existential danger, yet political institutions remain entirely blind to the threat. Mainstream political discourse remains bogged down in standard cable-news talking points regarding taxes and immigration, ignoring civilizational transformation and the widening wealth inequality in places like California. Istvan concludes with a call for visionary leaders capable of drafting forward-looking laws that safeguard humanity, bridge the wealth divide, and guide civilization into a transhumanist, space-faring future.
- Top AI engineers at elite Silicon Valley gatherings are actively preparing survival bunkers while forecasting ASI within 18 months. - Superintelligence poses unprecedented civilizational risks that are ignored by mainstream political parties and media. - Over 30 years in California, Istvan has witnessed extreme wealth polarization, underscoring the urgent need for structural economic and technological governance.
[16:38](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j4OduqrrSFo&t=998s) Equality, Transhumanist Utopias, and the Urgent Need for AI Governance
Zoltan Istvan emphasizes that fostering a genuine sense of equality is vital if civilization is to embark on this technological journey together. He candidly critiques modern leadership, arguing that the government—across both major political parties—has fundamentally failed to maintain equality as a primary mission. Despite these shortcomings, Istvan maintains that if society can place equality at the forefront, humanity can experience an extraordinary collective future. In this transhumanist vision, advanced artificial intelligence will help carry humanity "to the stars," empower people to transform their biological bodies, dramatically extend human lifespans, and forge the true "epitome of the utopia" that people dream of leaving behind for their children.
Acknowledging that his philosophical message might seem like an unconventional talk for a mainstream AI industry conference, Istvan thanks the audience for their openness. He concludes with an urgent call to action, urging attendees to hold policymakers accountable and force them into substantive discussions on AI policy and governance. He cautions that society is accelerating down a profound "rabbit hole," even as leaders in government remain conspicuously silent on the monumental ramifications that will reshape the world over the next 5 to 10 years.
- **Bipartisan Failure on Equality:** Both political parties have neglected equality as a central pillar, which Istvan views as essential for surviving automation. - **The Transhumanist Promise:** If guided equitably, AI offers radical positive transformation—enabling space exploration, biological self-enhancement, longevity, and shared abundance. - **Political Blind Spots:** A critical lack of urgency exists among elected officials regarding the deep societal and economic shifts approaching within the next 5 to 10 years.
Reading summary
Futurist and former California gubernatorial candidate Zoltan Istvan argues that the imminent arrival of advanced artificial intelligence requires establishing an "automated abundance economy" supported by universal basic income, domestic robotics, and transhumanist enhancement. Istvan contends that without proactive public governance and an economic safety net, rapid automation will cause severe social unrest while political leaders remain largely unprepared. The Approaching Singularity and Elite Existential Fears (1:51) Istvan reports that artificial superintelligence capable of outperforming human intelligence could emerge within 18 to 24 months, citing predictions from Elon Musk and technical founders. Drawing on an intimate gathering of roughly 80 AI engineers and founders at PayPal co-founder Max Levchin's home in San Francisco, Istvan claims that several creators predicting superintelligence 10 to 100 times smarter than humans within 18 months are quietly purchasing underground survival bunkers. He contrasts these elite private anxieties with mainstream political campaigns, where figures like Donald Trump and Democratic leaders focus on conventional tax and immigration debates rather than the societal implications of machine intelligence. The Three Pillars of the Automated Abundance Economy (5:49) To prevent widespread poverty and civil unrest as automation displaces white-collar and physical labor, Istvan proposes a tripartite framework. The first pillar is guaranteed income, whether structured as Universal Basic Income, a state-issued AI dividend, or revenues from federal land leasing, which Istvan frames as a mathematical necessity to avoid violent revolt when displaced workers can no longer afford food and shelter. The second pillar involves public programs to lease, lend, or distribute domestic humanoid robots to every household within five years to handle routine labor. The third pillar requires abandoning the traditional American Dream centered on continuous labor and wealth accumulation in favor of creative leisure, philosophy, and arts. Istvan notes this cultural shift met resistance during his gubernatorial campaign because voters struggle to imagine a work-free life. However, he maintains that domestic adoption cannot be slowed due to international pressure, warning that geopolitical rivals like China will aggressively pursue full automation regardless. Domestic Robotics and Physical Automation Timelines (9:09) Istvan projects that consumer humanoid robots will enter the market within 12 months at prices ranging between $15,000 and $20,000. He reports that commercial deployments are already underway in San Francisco, where startups market home-cleaning robot services at roughly $30 per hour. Istvan expects these machines to achieve the dexterity necessary to wash delicate dishes within six to eight months, while also integrating safety utilities such as smoke detection, carbon monoxide monitoring, and nursery supervision. Transhumanist Augmentation, Longevity, and Governance (3:31) Beyond software tools, Istvan anticipates artificial intelligence will merge directly into human biology through neural interfaces and physical augmentations. Referencing Neuralink and California biotechnology peers, he forecasts that presentations will be transmitted directly into audience minds within five years, noting current implants can already stream full text into the brain without screens. He also highlights participation in the Enhanced Games in Las Vegas to argue that pharmacological and cybernetic upgrades will be essential for humans to remain competitive alongside automated systems. In addition, Istvan ties automated abundance to AI-accelerated drug discovery, predicting human lifespans could reach 120 to 300 years. He warns that extending lifespans without basic income and automated safety nets would produce centuries of economic misery rather than flourishing. To avoid extreme inequality, he urges audiences to hold political institutions accountable for enacting anticipatory AI regulations over the next 5 to 10 years. Istvan acknowledges that his post-labor, transhumanist platform alienated mainstream voters who cannot envision an economy detached from traditional work. The unresolved challenge remains whether governments can overcome bipartisan paralysis and establish redistributive safety nets before rapid automation eliminates white-collar career paths.
精炼阅读摘要
未来学家佐尔坦·伊斯特万(Zoltan Istvan)主张,随着人工智能以超预期速度逼近超级智能并重塑就业结构,人类社会必须构建以全民基本收入、普及家用机器人及重塑“美国梦”为支柱的“自动化丰裕经济”,以防范社会崩溃并迈向后稀缺的星际文明。 超级智能逼近与政治治理滞后 (1:51) 伊斯特万援引埃隆·马斯克(Elon Musk)及行业顶尖专家的预测指出,超越人类智力10至100倍的人工智能系统可能在18至24个月内降临。他披露此前在PayPal联合创始人马克斯·列夫琴(Max Levchin)旧金山住所举行的高层聚会中,现场约80位AI核心架构师和创始人大多预测了该时间表,且部分顶尖技术人员已在私下购置地下避难所应对潜在冲击。这种技术加速与十年前大众难以想象ChatGPT日常交互或AI解决高等数学的怀疑态度形成鲜明反差。 然而,与技术突进并存的是治理体系的深度缺位。伊斯特万指出,无论是唐纳德·特朗普(Donald Trump)还是主流民主党领导层,均未制定应对超级智能治理的系统性框架,政治辩论仍停留在传统税收和移民口水战层面。作为在加利福尼亚州生活三十年的观察者,他批评两党政府未能将平等作为核心使命,忽视了极度极化的贫富差距,警告技术商业淘金热掩盖了生存级风险,呼吁通过立法正视未来5至10年重塑世界的AI治理难题。 神经接口与超人类主义身体增强 (3:31) 伊斯特万的超人类主义理念源于其早年在《国家地理》(National Geographic)担任记者时险些踩中活动地雷的生还经历,这一危机促使其在牛津大学攻读AI伦理与哲学硕士学位,并投身超人类主义倡导。他提出,人工智能不会仅作为屏幕上的外部工具存在,而是将深度整合进人体内部。 伊斯特万指出,Neuralink等生物科技公司研发的神经接口正在模糊生物学与机器的界限,现有脑机植入技术已展示将整本书内容直接传输至大脑的能力,他预测未来五年内公开演讲将实现直接向听众意识投送。此外,物理层面的机能改造同样是维持人类竞争力的手段,包括采用高性能机械义肢替换生物肢体,以及通过“增强运动会”(Enhanced Games)所展现的药物和生物技术拓展生理极限,避免人类在自动化生产环境中被边缘化。 自动化丰裕经济的三大核心支柱 (5:49) 面对机器智力全面替代白领与专业岗位的趋势,伊斯特万在其加利福尼亚州州长竞选纲领中系统提出了“自动化丰裕经济”(Automated Abundance Economy)。该框架由三大支柱构成:其一,推行全民基本收入(UBI)、AI红利或联邦土地资源租赁红利,伊斯特万将其定义为绝对的“数学必然性”,警告一旦劳动力因自动化永久脱离市场且无法负担生存成本,必将触发剧烈的民众反抗;其二,推进家庭机器人普及化,主张政府出台支持政策协助租赁或发放,目标在5年内实现每户拥有一台家政人形机器人。他预计售价1.5万至2万美元的消费级机器人将在一年内入市,洗碗等精细操作能力预计6至8个月内成型,并整合火灾与一氧化碳等多重安防监测。 其三是重构后劳动时代的“美国梦”。伊斯特万强调,人类劳动力无法与全天候运转、免工伤且无用工法律责任的机器人竞争,加之与中国等国的地缘经济竞争杜绝了放缓自动化的可能,社会必须废除将“个人价值等同于终身劳动积累财富”的旧有教条。他倡导建立新型社会价值体系,使年轻一代从功利性创收职能中解放,转向艺术、哲学、科学探索和休闲。 寿命激增风险与星际文明愿景 (13:01) 伊斯特万将自动化经济与生命科学的突破深度挂钩。AI驱动的药物研发与分子合成正在推动人类寿命突破80岁上限,迈向120岁、200岁乃至300岁。但他特别警告,如果激进的长寿技术未能与自动化丰裕经济及坚固的社会保障体系同步确立,生命的大幅延长将不再是福利,反而会导致数个世纪的经济困顿与生活绝望。 在伊斯特万的构想中,长寿技术、基本收入与自动化丰裕相结合的终极归宿,是推动人类文明向类似《星际迷航》(Star Trek)的无匮乏社会过渡。他呼吁行业和公众跳出对短期商业软件、云数据库及狭隘企业工具的执念,放眼未来500至1000年的文明演进,将人类的技术积累转化为突破生物局限、开展深空殖民与求索宏观科学的驱动力。 伊斯特万承认,在主流商业AI大会上推介去劳动化与超人类主义构想面临巨大的认知惯性,其竞选期间提出的“非工作世界”曾引发部分选民抵触。该论述留下的关键未决问题在于:在现行政治治理机制对AI技术严重滞后、财富极化加剧且资本竞逐白热化的现实约束下,社会体制能否在18至24个月的超级智能窗口期前建立起制度化分配网络,仍具有高度不确定性。
**竞选周期与核心议题**:投入 12 个月竞选加州州长,重点宣讲 UBI、家用机器人普及化及重塑美国梦。 - **教育与就业困境**:AI 的快速迭代将直接冲击下一代大学生的就业前景,传统职业路径面临系统性瓦解。 - **愿景定位**:超越传统人类肉身定义的局限,以“激进技术”为驱动迈向星际文明时代。 --- ### [01:51](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j4OduqrrSFo&t=111s) 奇点迫近、政界滞后与从战地生死到超人类主义 谈及技术奇点(Singularity)——即机器智能发展到人类大脑完全无法理解的临界点——伊斯特万引述埃隆·马斯克(Elon Musk)近期的言论指出,人类可能在短短 18 到 24 个月内就会跨入这一时代。面对如此剧烈的智能化浪潮,无论是特朗普(Donald Trump)还是民主党建制派政客,在治理层面上都毫无准备、一片茫然。伊斯特万指出,如今看待这些激进观点的感觉,就像十年前人们讨论 ChatGPT 一样:在十年前,如果有人预言会出现一个能即时按需解决各类数学难题、全天候与人对话甚至发展出情感关系的 AI,大家会觉得这完全是天方夜谭,而今天这一切已成为日常现实。 伊斯特万随后分享了个人的思想转型轨迹。作为一名刚从牛津大学获得研究生学位的 AI 伦理学家,哲学与伦理构成了他的学术底色。而真正促使他将一生奉献给“超人类主义”(Transhumanism)与“大幅延长寿命”(Life Extension)研究的,是他在《国家地理》(National Geographic)担任战地记者时的一段生死浩劫:当时他险些踩上一枚地雷,千钧一发之际向导猛地将他推开,才侥幸捡回一条命。这种劫后余生的震撼让他深刻意识到生命的脆弱,进而全身心转向探索如何借助激进科技将人类打造成更优秀的物种。 ```mermaid flowchart TD accTitle: 从战地生死体验到超人类主义思想路径 subgraph S1["生死转折"] A["担任《国家地理》战地记者"] --> B["踩雷边缘险境幸存"] end subgraph S2["学术与理论建构"] B --> C["致力于大幅寿命延长与超人类主义"] C --> D["撰写畅销书《超人类主义赌局》"] D --> E["牛津大学研习 AI 伦理与哲学"] end subgraph S3["政治与公共实践"] E --> F["倡导科学治理与技术方法论"] F --> G["应对 18-24 个月内迫近的技术奇点"] end ``` - **奇点时间表**:马斯克等技术领袖预测机器智能超越人类极限可能仅需 18 至 24 个月。 - **政治层面的认知脱节**:主流总统大选辩论中几乎完全缺失关于 AI 治理的核心议题。 - **个人代表作**:著有畅销书《超人类主义赌局》(*The Transhumanist Wager*),以此奠定了其在公共领域的未来主义发声地位。 --- ### [03:47](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j4OduqrrSFo&t=227s) 脑机接口、人体升级与未来预测维度的急剧压缩 超人类主义的核心逻辑在于将先进技术直接植入或融合进人体。伊斯特万以马斯克的脑机接口公司 Neuralink 以及加州同类企业为例,指出脑机直连技术正以惊人速度突破。他大胆断言:“在未来五年内,这类演讲甚至可以直接传输到大家的大脑中。”目前实验已经能够实现通过大脑植入体直接“阅读”整本书籍,完全摆脱了手指敲击键盘或屏幕交互等外部物理介质。从长远来看,为了在职场和未来社会中保持竞争力,人类将不可避免地对肉身进行升级,例如搭载机械义肢,甚至在一定程度上摒弃传统肉身。伊斯特万还提到自己曾参与早期筹划的“增强型运动会”(Enhanced Games,即允许参赛者使用前沿药物和技术提升表现的赛事),该赛事近期已在拉斯维加斯落地。 技术的指数级爆发彻底改变了未来预测的规则。过去,未来学学者能够清晰描绘未来 10 年的发展蓝图,但放眼 2036 年,这种长期预测在当下已几乎不可能实现。随着量子计算与前沿 AI 的叠加推进,大多数前沿学者只能勉强看清未来 2 到 5 年的技术走向。伊斯特万向在场观众发问:十年后大家是否还会聚集在此?如果 AI 在短短 12 到 18 个月内就全面超越人类智能,人类主导的行业会议是否还会存在?在巨变之下,如何让人类继续保留独特的物种价值与非凡体验,成为了当下最紧迫的命题。 - **脑机接口突破**:技术已实现在无需眼球或手指操作下,直接向大脑皮层传输书籍与信息,预计 5 年内实现脑内直接信息流交互。 - **人体性能增强**:通过机械义肢改造、生物药物增强(如 Enhanced Games 模式)维持人类在新时代的竞技与劳动能力。 - **预测视界压缩**:因量子与 AI 的技术奇点效应,传统 10 年期预测失效,战略预判窗口已缩窄至 2 至 5 年。 --- ### [06:43](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j4OduqrrSFo&t=403s) “自动化富足经济”的三大支柱:UBI、家用机器人与重塑美国梦 为了在 AI 超越人类、大规模失业浪潮席卷而来的未来保住人类社会的稳定与尊严,伊斯特万系统性地阐述了“自动化富足经济”的三大核心支柱: ```mermaid flowchart LR accTitle: 自动化富足经济的三大核心支柱 subgraph Pillars["自动化富足经济框架"] P1["支柱一:基础收入保障\n(UBI / AI 红利 / 联邦土地红利)"] P2["支柱二:家庭劳动解放\n(政府支持普及家用实体机器人)"] P3["支柱三:价值理念重塑\n(重新定义美国梦:从拼命赚钱到享受闲暇)"] end P1 --> OUT["化解大规模失业与社会动荡\n保障基本生存并维持人类尊严"] P2 --> OUT P3 --> OUT ``` 第一大支柱是**全民基本收入(UBI)**。伊斯特万强调,早在杨安泽(Andrew Yang)于 2020 年大选将其推广普及之前,自己就已是 UBI 的坚定倡导者。无论未来将其称作“AI 红利”(AI Dividend)、“联邦土地红利”(Federal Land Dividend)还是某种国家救济,其本质都是为了在未来 5 到 10 年的岗位替代海啸中兜底。他直言,如果全场所有人失去工作且无处可去,社会必然爆发剧烈动荡与反抗,因此政府与科技巨头必须建立托底机制,保障公众的温饱与居住权益。他呼吁大众在投票时务必选择那些将 AI 与基础收入挂钩的候选人。 第二大支柱是**推动机器人走入千家万户**。伊斯特万主张政府应像建设公路、保障供水等公共基础设施一样,出资或补贴家用机器人,将人类彻底从繁琐的家务劳动中解放出来。他提到旧金山已有初创公司开始推出每小时 30 美元的机器人上门保洁服务,全自动化家庭服务的时代已近在眼前。虽然当前展会现场展出的部分机器人灵活性尚显初级,但硅谷核心实验室里秘密研发的最新一代机型已具备极高的成熟度。至于第三大支柱,则是**重塑“美国梦”**——彻底告别过去那种“拼命工作挣大钱”的旧有信条,在自动化与物质富足的新纪元中,将人生的核心转向享受闲暇、追求精神体验与自由创造。 - **UBI 与社会契约**:无论以 AI 红利还是土地红利为名,均是防止 AI 取代人类工作后引发社会动乱的必要防线。 - **家政自动化服务**:旧金山已出现 30 美元/小时的实体机器人上门清洁服务,家庭劳务全面替代已步入商用测试阶段。 - **重塑生命价值**:将社会成功标准从“高强度劳动积累财富”转向“在富足时代享受闲暇与创造力”。 ### [09:57](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j4OduqrrSFo&t=597s) 家用机器人的普及与家庭生活重塑 Zoltan Istvan 称赞了现代机器人技术的惊人进展,特别是机械手的灵巧程度已经达到了令人叹为观止的水平。回顾自己在加利福尼亚州的竞选经历,他曾提出一项激进的政策主张:在五年时间内,政府应通过租赁、借贷或销售的方式,让每个家庭都拥有一台机器人,以彻底解放人们的家务劳动。机器人不仅能在父母无暇顾及时在床头给孩子读故事书,还能充当家庭全能安全卫士——例如内置一氧化碳检测仪,在婴儿熟睡时监测蜘蛛、烟雾或其他潜在威胁。 他预测,在未来一年内,售价在 15,000 至 20,000 美元区间的家用机器人就会开始走进大众家庭。尽管目前进入家庭的早期机型在洗碗等精细活上还无法保证不打破盘子,但技术预计会在 6 到 8 个月内攻克这一难关,从而彻底改变普通人的生活形态。 - 核心愿景:5 年内让机器人走入每一个美国家庭,承接日常琐碎家务与看护辅助。 - 安全守护:集成烟雾报警、一氧化碳监测、危险昆虫检测等多重传感器。 - 价格与落地周期:预计 1 年内出现 1.5 万至 2 万美元区间的家用人形/服务机器人,6 至 8 个月内实现不碎盘洗碗等精细灵巧操作。 --- ### [10:54](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j4OduqrrSFo&t=654s) 告别劳碌:重构“美国梦”与自动化富足经济 面对 AI 在智力和灵巧度上全面超越人类的未来,人类的工作正在被系统性替代——机器人不仅能 24 小时不间断工作,而且表现更优越,永远不会起诉雇主,也不会在香蕉皮上滑倒请工伤。Istvan 指出,人类必须彻底“重构梦想”(Reimagine the Dream)。在他竞选州长期间,这种观点曾遭遇强烈阻力,因为绝大多数人甚至无法想象一个“无需工作”的世界。然而,在 AI、资本主义推进以及中美两国机器人技术全速竞赛的背景下,人类已然站在这一剧变的悬崖边缘。 在 Istvan 构想的“自动化富足经济”(Automated Abundance Economy)中,普及全民基本收入(UBI)与家用机器人将赋予人类前所未有的奢华、意义和悠闲生活。传统的美国梦教导人们“努力工作才能致富并实现梦想”,但这一逻辑对于当下的年轻一代(包括坐在会场里的他女儿)已经彻底失效,通往传统成功的阶梯已被高昂的现实与 AI 替代所阻断。未来的新美国梦不再要求每个人必须具备“实用功能”去拼命挣钱,而是让人自由选择成为艺术家、去攻读音乐博士,尽情享受生命与创造力。 ```mermaid flowchart TD accTitle: 传统美国梦与自动化富足经济新美国梦的对比 subgraph 传统范式["传统美国梦(工业/资本主义时代)"] A["拼命工作劳碌"] --> B["获取金钱财富"] B --> C["实现阶级跃升与梦想"] C --> D["过度依赖劳动实用性"] end subgraph 未来范式["自动化富足经济(AI与机器人时代)"] E["AI & 机器人接管生产"] --> F["全民基本收入 (UBI) 保障"] F --> G["摆脱生存劳作约束"] G --> H["追求艺术、学术、闲暇与星际探索"] end ``` --- ### [12:52](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j4OduqrrSFo&t=772s) 极端长寿时代与制度治理的紧迫性 AI 技术的影响远不止于办公软件或云端数据,它正与长寿生物学深度结合。Istvan 提到,会场中就有掌管数十亿美元规模公司的行业先锋,正利用 AI 合成全新分子来研制延寿药物。如果人类的寿命不再局限于 80 岁,而是被激进科技延长到 120 岁、200 岁甚至 300 岁,那么建立公正稳健的治理框架与自动化富足经济就成了关乎物种存续的头等大事——因为在缺乏保障的糟糕社会体系中,活上数百年将是一场无法逃脱的无尽折磨。 摆脱了生存劳作束缚并享有漫长寿命的人类文明,将有机会迈向类似于《星际迷航》(Star Trek)描绘的星际航行时代。这远比在大会展台上兜售数据库或云软件更为宏大,它关乎人类在未来 500 到 1000 年的根本走向。 - 技术融合:AI 加速分子设计,推动激进延寿药物研发。 - 寿命跨度:人类预期寿命有望从传统的 80 岁大幅跃升至 120 岁、200 岁乃至 300 岁。 - 远期图景:以长寿和富足为基石,推动人类文明走出地球、迈入深空探索时代。 --- ### [14:32](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j4OduqrrSFo&t=872s) 超级智能(ASI)危机与地堡聚会 在展望乌托邦的同时,Istvan 表达了自己最深层的恐惧——超级智能(Superintelligent AI)。这一担忧源于他在牛津大学的研究经历以及与顶级技术圈的接触。他分享了一段不久前在旧金山参加的私人聚会经历:在 OpenAI 首席执行官 Sam Altman 的合作伙伴 Max Levchin 的豪宅中,聚集了大约 80 位全球顶尖的 AI 工程师。这场聚会的氛围极为诡异,许多顶尖工程师私下透露自己正在购买末日地堡,并断言在短短 18 个月内,人类就将迎来比自身聪明 10 倍乃至 100 倍的超级智能(奇点级别 AI)。 Istvan 警告称,人类目前正盲目地一头扎进这一潜在的巨大陷阱之中。尽管 AI 淘金热带来了巨大的财富和兴奋,但超级智能带来的存在性威胁在政治层面上几乎处于被完全漠视的状态,他感到自己有道义上的责任向公众敲响警钟。 - 关键预测:顶尖 AI 工程师预估 18 个月内可能诞生超越人类智力数十至上百倍的超级智能。 - 业界隐忧:一线核心技术开发人员正在购置末日避难地堡(bunkers)防范未知失控风险。 - 政治盲区:主流政界对超级智能的潜在毁灭性冲击缺乏实质性讨论与立法准备。 --- ### [15:44](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j4OduqrrSFo&t=944s) 呼吁重构政治议程,迈向超人类主义乌托邦 在演讲尾声,Istvan 呼吁政治领域进行深刻变革。他批评两党政客长年沉溺于移民、税收等传统 CNN 或 Fox 电视辩论议题,完全脱离了技术革命的现实。以他在加利福尼亚州生活 30 年的亲身体验为例,贫富分化已经达到极其严峻的地步——富人愈发富有,穷人愈发困窘,政府在维护社会公平的核心职责上严重失职。 他敦促人们推动政治家直面 AI 治理、超人类主义、身体改造以及深空探索等真正决定人类未来的核心议题。虽然这番极具哲学色彩的演讲在技术商业会议上显得有些异类,但他坚信,唯有主动通过立法和理想引导技术分配,人类才能避免阶级撕裂与失控灾难,携手迈入 AI 赋能的星际乌托邦时代。 - 核心批评:现有政治体制严重滞后,两党政府在遏制贫富分化与应对前沿技术冲击上均告失败。 - 治理诉求:政界必须将议程重心转向 AI 治理、超人类主义伦理、财富再分配与未来文明立法。 - 终极呼吁:在未来 5 到 10 年的关键窗口期内,建立能够容纳技术剧变的全新治理体系,确保科技成果造福全人类。 ## Notable quotes > [00:04](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j4OduqrrSFo&t=4s) 当 AI 精密到足以取代现场绝大多数人的工作时,孩子们该何去何从? — 佐尔坦·伊斯特万 > [03:47](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j4OduqrrSFo&t=227s) 在未来五年内,这类演讲甚至可以直接传输到大家的大脑中。 — 佐尔坦·伊斯特万 > [06:43](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j4OduqrrSFo&t=403s) 如果全场所有人失去工作且无处可去,社会必然爆发剧烈动荡与反抗,因此政府与科技巨头必须建立托底机制,保障公众的温饱与居住权益。 — 佐尔坦·伊斯特万 > [09:57](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j4OduqrrSFo&t=597s) 在五年时间内,政府应通过租赁、借贷或销售的方式,让每个家庭都拥有一台机器人,以彻底解放人们的家务劳动。 — 佐尔坦·伊斯特万 > [10:54](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j4OduqrrSFo&t=654s) 机器人不仅能 24 小时不间断工作,而且表现更优越,永远不会起诉雇主,也不会在香蕉皮上滑倒请工伤。 — 佐尔坦·伊斯特万 > [10:54](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j4OduqrrSFo&t=654s) 传统的美国梦教导人们“努力工作才能致富并实现梦想”,但这一逻辑对于当下的年轻一代已经彻底失效。 — 佐尔坦·伊斯特万 > [10:54](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j4OduqrrSFo&t=654s) 未来的新美国梦不再要求每个人必须具备“实用功能”去拼命挣钱,而是让人自由选择成为艺术家、去攻读音乐博士,尽情享受生命与创造力。 — 佐尔坦·伊斯特万 > [12:52](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j4OduqrrSFo&t=772s) 在缺乏保障的糟糕社会体系中,活上数百年将是一场无法逃脱的无尽折磨。 — 佐尔坦·伊斯特万 > [14:32](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j4OduqrrSFo&t=872s) 人类目前正盲目地一头扎进这一潜在的巨大陷阱之中。 — 佐尔坦·伊斯特万 > [15:44](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j4OduqrrSFo&t=944s) 唯有主动通过立法和理想引导技术分配,人类才能避免阶级撕裂与失控灾难,携手迈入 AI 赋能的星际乌托邦时代。 — 佐尔坦·伊斯特万 ## Mentioned 佐尔坦·伊斯特万 (Zoltan Istvan), 埃隆·马斯克 (Elon Musk), 唐纳德·特朗普 (Donald Trump), 杨安泽 (Andrew Yang), 山姆·奥特曼 (Sam Altman), 马克斯·列夫琴 (Max Levchin), 国家地理 (National Geographic), 牛津大学 (University of Oxford), Neuralink, OpenAI, ChatGPT, 《超人类主义赌局》 (The Transhumanist Wager), 增强型运动会 (Enhanced Games), 《星际迷航》 (Star Trek), 全民基本收入 (UBI), 超级智能 (ASI), 自动化富足经济 (Automated Abundance Economy) ## Video description Zoltan Istvan - Original transcript
[0:04] My talk is largely about how AI is affecting the  world. It's also about universal basic income and [0:10] some of the economical things that will be  happening to the world. But before we get into [0:15] that, I just want to introduce myself a little  bit and tell you a little bit about how I've been [0:21] what I've been doing the last year. So,  I just finished about a 12-month period [0:24] of running for California governor.  I was not the Democratic nominee, [0:29] unfortunately, but we did put in a full 12 months.  So, what's really interesting about that is that [0:35] along the way I was been promoting in California  universal basic income, robots in people's houses, [0:41] and kind of redefining the American dream, which  I think is sort of why you're here today talking, [0:47] you know, listening to me talk about the automated  abundance economy, which is a term that we've [0:51] given for the types of ideas that we have.  Unfortunately, in California, we're probably [0:56] not going to have a universal basic income  anytime soon, but um it it will come to pass, [1:01] I think, as robots and AI become so sophisticated  they take over jobs. But one of the things I did [1:08] during my 12 months of campaigning was visiting  universities, which is really tough. You know, [1:12] I have a [snorts] a daughter who's about  to apply to college in a year or two, and [1:16] what are kids going to do when AI actually becomes  so sophisticated they can replace most of the jobs [1:21] in this room? Well, that time is coming, so we  do need some governance that can discuss that. [1:29] You know, there are some other candidates that  are out there that have been futurist oriented, [1:32] but I'm the one who's really pushing the Star  Trek era, really trying to get us off planet, [1:38] really trying to get us into an era that is not  defined by what it means to be a human being, [1:43] but defined by the kinds of things that  can be possible with radical technology. [1:51] You know, you hear a lot about the singularity,  this time, this moment in time when maybe AI will [1:55] [clears throat] become so sophisticated that the  human brain can no longer understand it. In fact, [2:00] Elon Musk tweeted about about just a few days ago  saying in 18 months we will be entering that era. [2:06] It's possible that within 18 to 24 months a  machine intelligence will be so smart that it's [2:12] beyond our capacity. We call this the singularity  and if it happens, there's nobody, not Trump, [2:18] not any of the Democrats who have any idea on how  to try to govern during this time, which is going [2:23] to be wild. But I'm a candidate who's been pushing  a lot of these ideas and while it sounds a little [2:29] bit funny on the surface, it would almost have  been talking about ChatGPT 10 years ago. 10 years [2:34] ago it sounded in insane to say, oh, we're going  to have an AI that's going to be able to solve all [2:39] these problems, solve mathematical issues and  things like that just on demand, you know, and [2:43] and we talk to all day long. Maybe even have  relationships with. And yet that time is already [2:48] here. So it's time that we really start kind of  looking into a lot of those things. My background [2:53] is as an AI ethicist. Just finished a graduate  degree at University of Oxford. And really I've [2:58] had a philosophy has been my main thing. But  the main idea behind a lot of my work is my what [3:05] happened to me when I was a journalist in National  Geographic. I almost stepped on a landmine. [3:11] Almost killed me. And a I was essentially you  know, given this kind of like ability to live [3:18] again. My guide pushed me out of the way. It was  just a very harrowing experience. But the point is [3:23] that I after that I dedicated a lot of my life to  life extension. To living dramatically longer and [3:30] to transhumanism. And transhumanism, which we're  going to get into a little bit, is this idea of [3:35] how do we use radical technologies to become  a better species. Now AI, this conference is [3:41] about of course is a part of transhumanism. We've  been talking about AI forever. But the idea with [3:47] transhumanism is that we're going to implement  AI eventually directly into our bodies. I wrote a [3:52] book called the Transhumanist Wager, which became  a best seller and kind of launched my career into [3:56] the public sphere. As a result, I've run a number  of political campaigns, all which have done very [4:01] well. The gubernatorial race, even though I I  didn't um you know, really come close to being [4:05] competitive, we still got a lot of press. One  of the reasons we get a lot of press is because [4:10] we talk about science, and I'm the only candidate  out there that's really discussing science [4:14] on an everyday level, scientific method as a way  to govern, and things like that. I wish we had [4:19] more candidates that talk about. For example, in  the last presidential debates, you didn't really [4:23] have a question on AI. Don't you think that's the  most important question in the room right now? [4:27] Think a lot of people do, and unfortunately, we  don't have candidates that are discussing that. [4:33] But the main thing that I've been promoting right  now has been transhumanism, this idea that we can [4:37] merge technology and ourselves together. You  know, Elon Musk, for example, has a company [4:42] called Neuralink. It's a classic transhumanist  technology and classic transhumanist company. [4:48] They're trying to get people to communicate  with internet. They're having some success. [4:51] There's a number of other California companies  doing the same thing. Eventually, this uh talk, [4:57] I bet within 5 years, will be done directly into  your heads. They're working on that technology as [5:03] we speak. In fact, they've had some success. You  can read an entire book now through these types of [5:08] uh technologies where a brain implant on  your brain can actually tell you the story. [5:12] You don't have to do anything on the outside with  your fingertips or computers or things like that. [5:17] So, this is where we're going in just a  couple years' time. And there are many [5:20] commercial applications to it. But that's what  transhumanism is, is really upgrading the body um [5:26] to some extent uh also maybe even getting rid  of the flesh, upgrading your body parts so you [5:30] can be more competitive in the workplace, uh  robotic arms, robotic legs. Uh I was you know, [5:37] involved with some of the early uh operations of  the enhanced games where you take drugs to compete [5:42] better and things like that. They recently  had their big games here in in Las Vegas. [5:46] This is transhumanism, and the world is definitely  coming no matter how we look at it. One of the [5:51] things I try to talk about is how the world's  going to look like in 10 years from now, in [5:55] 2036. But that's so far away. You know, futurists  used to be able to give you a kind of a really [6:00] interesting 10-year prognosis. It's very difficult  to do that anymore. Technology is changing [6:06] very rapidly. It's almost impossible, I would say,  anymore. Most of us look 2 to 5 years in advance, [6:12] especially with quantum technology, those kinds  of AI things coming through the pipeline. It's [6:17] really impossible for us to do that anymore. That  said, we need to have a much better understanding, [6:24] even with those technologies, of  how you people are going to live. [6:28] Will you still be coming here in 10 years' time?  Will there still be a conference for human beings [6:33] if AI is smarter than all of us? Many people  think AI is going to be smarter than us in the [6:37] next 12 months, 18 months. Maybe it already is,  some people have said. Well, one of the things [6:43] I've been promoting, and I know there's a a lot of  another names for it, automated abundance economy. [6:48] It's this idea that even if you lose your  jobs, even if AI becomes smarter than us, [6:53] even if the world changes underneath our feet, and  it is changing, there's still a way to progress. [6:59] There's still a way to keep humanity important,  to make it so that we remain the kind of [7:06] wonderful species and have these amazing  experiences that we can that we have right now. [7:12] It involves three different things. And the first  is universal basic income, which I've been a big [7:16] advocate for for a long time. We're going to get  into a little bit. And the second one is trying to [7:20] use AI and robots in our homes. And the third is,  of course, reimagining the dream. Um reimagine I [7:26] I do a lot of international speeches, but and I  usually don't say the American dream international [7:31] because it's it scares people. But in America,  I'll just say it. The American dream, this idea [7:35] that we can um work really hard and become rich  and live the life we want has died to some extent. [7:42] So, we're going to need to redefine that what that  means. But first, one of the things that's most [7:46] important, I've been supporting universal basic  income even before Andrew Yang did when he became [7:50] quite well known for it in this the presidential  nominees as as a Democrat in I think 2020. I think [7:57] universal basic income is absolutely critical.  I cannot imagine a scenario where we don't have [8:02] something like that. No, don't get me wrong. It  doesn't have to be called universal basic income. [8:06] Uh I think um other people are calling it an  AI dividend. Other people are calling it a [8:11] federal land dividend. Other people are calling it  whatever they want to call it, just some kind of a [8:16] handout. Whatever it is, there's no question that  if AI replaces many of the jobs in this room or [8:22] becomes so much smarter than us, that we're going  to have to have some kind of system of governments [8:27] that keeps people fed, housed, and and able to  live and still not revolt. That's the main thing [8:33] with the future is if everyone in this room  loses their job and can't get another one, [8:37] you're going to revolt. So, somehow the  government and the powers that be, billionaires, [8:42] they're going to have to make sure that we're all  taken care of. I support a universal basic income, [8:47] but it can be many different names. The more  important part is that when you go out there [8:51] in the world and you vote for people, try to  pick someone who's trying to make sure that [8:56] they have the AI and basic income component in  their mind so that there is a way to deal with [9:02] the huge onslaught of job loss that's almost  certainly coming within the next 5 to 10 years. [9:09] Now, the second one, this is the one that  got me a lot of attention in my gubernatorial [9:11] race in California. We want to put a robot in  every home. And we may want to do it through [9:15] the government support. Now, I'm not like some  progressive Democrat who's really pushing for [9:20] huge support from the government. But I do  think if we have a government and it wants [9:24] to make our lives easier, like building nice  roads or providing water, things like that, [9:30] then it would be really nice to have a robot  take away our chores. And that's right around [9:34] the pipeline. In fact, just a few days ago  I saw a San Francisco company advertising [9:38] of robots coming into your house for $30 an  hour and cleaning your house. Not human people, [9:44] but robots. That's how sophisticated many of these  things are. You can see some of them on the floor. [9:48] I got to be honest, the ones we've seen on the  exhibit floor are not super sophisticated. The [9:52] ones that are being built though in Silicon Valley  that I've seen kind of undercover a little bit, [9:57] they are amazing. The things they can  do with their hands are absolutely wild. [10:03] I proposed in my California run that we would  either lease or lend or sell a robot to every [10:10] home within 5 years time so that you can  reduce your chores. A robot would, you know, [10:15] read to your child at night if you couldn't do  it. You know, robots are great. Like for example, [10:18] carbon monoxide detectors are built into them.  So, you you you can like for example, your child, [10:24] your baby's sleeping in the crib. A robot can  detect a spider. It can detect smoke. It can do [10:29] all these things. There's a huge amount of safety  factors that I think many people would embrace [10:33] robots. Probably [snorts] within the next year,  we'll have robots in the $15 to $20,000 range [10:39] that people will start getting into their houses.  There already are some that people are taking in, [10:43] but they're not doing the dishes in in a way  that can not break them yet. But they will [10:48] probably within 6 to 8 months. And that's going  to be a game changer for many of us. Now finally, [10:54] I think one of the biggest things and maybe some  of the reason you're here listening today is [10:58] the idea of what does it even mean to live in a  world where AI is so much smarter than us? Um it [11:04] takes our jobs. It's dexterity as a robot can do  anything that we can do except better and 24 hours [11:09] a day and without ever suing our employer and  falling on banana, any of these things. What can [11:15] we do? Well, we have to reimagine the dream. And  this is where I think perhaps my gubernatorial run [11:20] lost some of its footing. People didn't like  what I had to say and you probably won't either. [11:24] A world without working is something that  most of us can't even imagine. And yet we're [11:29] on on precipice of that. We're going to get there.  If If AI and capitalism keeps pushing forward this [11:35] world, and they probably will because China's  creating robots, and we're in a race against [11:39] China against doing this, so we're just kind  of going full speed forward all these nations. [11:44] How do we live? What do we do? Well,  hopefully the automated amounts economy [11:50] will give you this idea that even with a basic  income, robots in our houses, we can have a life [11:57] of luxury, we can have a life of meaning, we can  have a life where perhaps it's much more leisurely [12:02] than it's ever been before. And that's something  that I like. But that does take reimagining the [12:07] dream cuz right now you've been taught most  of your life you got to work hard, and if you [12:11] work hard you're going to become rich, and if you  become rich you're going to have that dream. And [12:14] for many of us that has been true. For some of us,  of course, not. But that dream for younger people, [12:20] my daughter's in the room right now,  that's that's not possible anymore. [12:25] Most people will not be able to reach the American  dream because it's become too difficult given the [12:29] circumstances, especially with AI and robots  taking over. So, we do need to reimagine that. [12:35] And I hope that uh with a basic income maybe  people have a lot more time to be artists, [12:39] maybe go do PhDs in music. It doesn't matter.  You don't have to be functional anymore. [12:43] Right now many of us in this room are totally  functional. We're here to make money. But that [12:47] won't be the American dream of the future.  The American dream will have to be reimagined. [12:52] And I have to say as I get kind of near the end  of my slides, what's really important is that [12:56] you understand that there are people right  now here at this at this uh conference [13:00] who are running billion-dollar companies that are  making drugs that are going to make us live a lot [13:04] longer. Longevity and AI are going hand-in-hand  together. Brand new molecules are being created. [13:10] And when that happens, this American dream  that I just spoke about, the reimagined one, [13:14] we're going to be living dramatically  longer. So, if we live much longer, [13:18] we better make sure that whatever uh you know,  version of reality and governance that we have, [13:24] it stays with us. Because if it's not, we're  living so much longer, life could be miserable, [13:29] not just for the 80 years we're normally  here on planet Earth, but for 120, [13:34] 200, 300. I mean, who knows what kind of radical  technologies will be here in the next, you know, [13:39] 30 to 50 years. So, the idea of creating an  automated once economy with some type of universal [13:46] basic income or whatever you want to call it is  imperative for a species that might be on the [13:51] edge of living dramatically longer because of  radical science. And that brings us to, you know, [13:57] even things wild things like space travel. The  idea that we really can have an exciting life. We [14:02] can get off planet and get to that Star Trek era.  Something that is totally different than I think [14:08] the the maybe the software or the data banks or  the clouds that you're trying to sell at this [14:12] event. I'm talking about something that's much  more interesting. Something that really is like, [14:17] "Wow, where are we going over the next 500,  1,000 years?" So, the idea of what I'm trying [14:23] to propose as a candidate or having run just  ideas and books and writing that that I do [14:28] is something that's quite quite different. But,  I have to tell you that there is one thing that [14:32] has really challenged me and I a lot of my  work at Oxford was on this was on this topic. [14:38] I am absolutely freaked out about super  intelligent AI. I was recently at Max Levchin's [14:44] house mansion in San Francisco. He's a partner  of Sam Altman of ChatGPT, you know, OpenAI. And [14:53] there was a conference It was actually not a  conference. It was like a an 80-person meetup [14:57] at just at a mansion. It was really bizarre, but  it was fun. All the best AI engineers were there. [15:02] Many of them were buying bunkers. Many of them  were telling me within 18 months we will have [15:07] super intelligent AI. That means something that's  not just smarter than us, but 10 times smarter [15:12] than us, 100 times smarter than us, singularity  type thinking. What do we do? We're kind of just [15:17] running headlong into this this this big trap  potentially. Maybe AI super intelligent AI, [15:23] will help us and we'll have a better life than  ever, but maybe it'll be super dangerous. So, [15:27] I just have to, you know, I I guess it's my moral  obligation to warn you that despite this amazing [15:33] industry, despite the gold rush of AI and AI  that's happening for all of our lives right now, [15:38] it is incredibly dangerous, the super intelligent  aspect, and nobody seems to be addressing it, [15:44] certainly not on the political level. That  said, I still have a very optimistic vision [15:50] of what the world can be like. I think if we could  get politicians in there that want to discuss it, [15:55] not just discuss immigration, not just discuss  taxes, not just discuss the normal things [16:00] that you guys hear every day from CNN or Fox or  whatever political spectrum you're on. I'm not [16:05] much of a political party guy. We need people  that actually talk about these things and say, [16:10] "How can we create laws and create ideals that  will take us to the next step of civilization?" [16:18] Something that embraces AI, transhumanism in  our world, something that embraces space travel, [16:23] something that tries to equal the the  complete dislocation of the classes. I mean, [16:29] let's be honest, if you haven't lived in  California what I have as I have last 30 years, [16:33] the poor have gotten so much poorer and the rich  have gotten so much richer. Something must be done [16:38] to create a better sense of equality so we all  go down this path together um as a civilization. [16:45] And I think what's happened right now is the  government has really failed us, both parties, [16:51] in keeping equality as a primary purpose, which  has always been one of my primary purposes. But [16:58] if we can do that, we can all go down this amazing  journey together where AI takes us to the stars, [17:03] and we change our bodies, we live dramatically  longer, we create a world that is is the kind of [17:09] epitome of the utopia that we might actually have  wanted. We can dream of. We want to share with our [17:15] children and things like that. Anyways, thank you  so much for having me. I know this is a little bit [17:19] of a a a strange talk for an AI conference. This  is more of a philosophical message, but I want to [17:24] thank you for hearing it out, and I hope you'll  think about some of these things, especially [17:28] getting your politicians to talk more about  what's happening with AI and governance because [17:33] we are going down this rabbit hole, and it seems  like nobody in government wants to discuss the [17:38] ramifications of what's the world is going to be  like in the next 5 to 10 years. Thank you so much.
