## Detailed walkthrough ### [00:00](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1444rkhQwVc&t=0s) Summer Break and the Chase Center Announcement

Ben Gilbert and David Rosenthal kick off the episode with a celebratory summer vibe, though they quickly dispel the notion that they are actually taking a vacation. Despite an official six-week hiatus from releasing regular episodes—their first real break after ten consecutive years of non-stop production—the duo is channeling all of their operational energy into prepping for their upcoming live show on September 10th at the Chase Center in downtown San Francisco. Partnering with JP Morgan Payments, the event represents the largest undertaking in the history of the *Acquired* podcast.

The hosts officially announce that Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg will take the stage as one of the featured acts, alongside several unannounced surprises. While the pair previously issued a "save the date" notice months ago, this segment marks the first time they are discussing ticket sales directly on the main feed. Ben notes that despite only marketing the event via email, Twitter, and their Slack community, several thousand listeners have already purchased tickets. The show's ultimate goal is to foster a massive, West Coast celebration of like-minded tech and business enthusiasts, drawing comparisons to Berkshire Hathaway's famous annual shareholder weekend in Omaha.

- **Event Date:** September 10th at the Chase Center, San Francisco. - **Ticket Pricing:** Floor seats are priced at an all-in rate of $100 (nearly sold out), while all other sections in the arena are $50, which includes Ticketmaster fees. - **Audience Meetups:** Listeners are actively organizing surrounding dinners, happy hours, and company off-sites in the Slack community for the days before and after the main event. - **Group Booking Support:** Larger corporate or private groups (such as a referenced 13-year-old's birthday party group) can coordinate logistics directly via hello@acquired.fm.

[03:22](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1444rkhQwVc&t=202s) The Wall Street Journal Trajectory Shift

Reflecting on the whirlwind of the past few months, David shares that between the birth of his second daughter in late April and a massive profile in *The Wall Street Journal*, he barely had time to process the show's sudden growth before leaving for a recent trip to Hawaii. Ben describes the profile, authored by Ben Cohen for the *Journal's* "Science of Success" column, as the absolute best contemporary encapsulation of what *Acquired* has become. The press coverage triggered an unprecedented surge, catapulting *Acquired* to the number one podcast spot globally on both Apple Podcasts and Spotify.

Ben and David discuss how hitting the top spot created a self-fulfilling prophecy of discovery, as the visual prominence on the podcast platforms' browse tabs sustained their momentum for weeks. This phenomenon directly challenged David's long-held belief that audiences rarely cross media modalities—meaning people typically don't read print journalism and immediately open a podcast app to subscribe. The resulting growth numbers completely altered the show's baseline metrics, turning a standard press piece into a genuine inflection point.

- **Subscriber Surge:** The podcast gained 317,000 new subscribers/followers following the publication of the article. - **Baseline Context:** Prior to this surge, the total estimated listener base at the start of January was roughly 500,000 people. - **Historical Growth Profile:** For its first nine years, the show grew entirely organically without paid marketing, doubling in size year-over-year purely through listener word-of-mouth.

[08:28](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1444rkhQwVc&t=508s) Outliers and the Idiosyncratic Playbook

The massive success of the profile leads Ben to share a "dirty secret" regarding the core philosophy of *Acquired*. While the show prides itself on analyzing business playbooks and lessons learned, Ben muses that the subjects they cover are such extreme outliers that their strategies might not actually be reproducible for standard businesses. The tech giants featured on the show operate as near-monopolies in the world's most lucrative markets, making their modern cash-gushing states poor templates for standard business operations. Because of this, the hosts emphasize the first few years of a company's life to extract the true catalysts of their initial momentum.

David connects this phenomenon back to their own sudden growth spike, reinforcing the overarching takeaway from their catalog: "every great success story is idiosyncratic". You cannot engineer a lightning-in-a-bottle moment or execute a rigid PR strategy to force that kind of trajectory shift.

[11:13](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1444rkhQwVc&t=673s) Main Show Focus and the Evolution of AQ2

Ben lays out a structural update regarding how future episodes will be balanced between their channels. The distinct magic of a core *Acquired* episode relies on Ben and David independently conducting hundreds of hours of research, arriving with "separate prepared minds," and debating corporate history across a sweeping four-hour format. Because this narrative approach differs fundamentally from a traditional Q&A interview show, they have decided to reserve the main feed exclusively for this deep-dive format.

While the hosts will still occasionally land long-form sessions with primary protagonists—citing past multi-hour standard episodes with figures like Jensen Huang, Charlie Munger, Dara Khosrowshahi, and Howard Schultz—standard executive interviews will now reside permanently on their secondary feed, AQ2. This allows them to continue exploring high-level business insights without altering the core identity of the main podcast.

- **AQ2 Content:** Designated as the home for exceptional interviews, such as past deep dives with the leadership of Synopsys exploring the semiconductor industry. - **Upcoming AQ2 Release:** An interview with NFL legend Joe Montana detailing his successful transition from multi-time Super Bowl MVP to elite venture capitalist.

[13:35](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1444rkhQwVc&t=815s) Parent Carve-Outs: Running Strollers and Disney's Aulani

The conversation shifts into the traditional "Carve-outs" segment, which takes a distinct turn toward family life now that both hosts have young children. Ben introduces a new sub-category called "parent carve-outs," leading with his premier Father's Day gift: a high-performance running stroller. With his son turning six months old—the baseline age safety threshold for running strollers—Ben highlights the joy of getting his mileage back up while his son watches the trees whiz by. David notes that while he loves outdoor time with his children, San Francisco's extreme hills keep him in infant carrier mode for steep hikes rather than stroller running.

David follows up with his own vacation recommendation from his recent break with his three-year-old and three-month-old daughters. Seeking a destination that could offer genuine relaxation given the challenging age gap, his family traveled to the Disney Aulani Resort in Hawaii. In a humorous exchange, David gives a hilariously measured review, clarifying that it is explicitly not a high-end luxury resort, nor is it a traditional theme park with rides, nor does it feature the area's prettiest beach. Instead, he explains that it perfectly hits the exact intersection of the Venn diagram for a young family's logistical needs.

- **Stroller Recommendation:** The Thule (colloquially pronounced "Tuli") Urban Glide 3. - **Travel Recommendation:** Disney's Aulani Resort in Hawaii, noted for its "light-touch" Disney branding and family-centric design.

[16:44](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1444rkhQwVc&t=1004s) The Perfect Vacation for Young Families

The discussion wraps up around the Hawaii trip, with the speaker emphasizing how it perfectly "nails the center of that Venn diagram" for harried parents seeking relaxation while ensuring everyone has a good time. It stands out as the ultimate trip for their current stage in life. While the resort hosted family reunions and families with pre-teens and teens, it was predominantly filled with families rather than non-family travelers, showing a universal love for the combination of Disney and Hawaii.

[17:34](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1444rkhQwVc&t=1054s) Discovering Meller Sunglasses

The conversation shifts to adult recommendations and summer carve-outs. One speaker enthusiastically introduces Meller (spelled m-e-l-l-e-r), an independent sunglasses brand they discovered by accident while walking around the shops at a friend's wedding in Spain earlier that summer. Having forgotten their usual pair due to an early morning departure, they bought these on a whim and were astonished by the quality.

Despite costing only $59 and featuring polarized lenses, the clarity was shocking. The speaker notes that usually putting glass in front of your eyes causes minor distortion, but with these, they can actually "see better than I can with my own plain eyes," turning them into a brand loyalist. When asked if the company belongs to the massive eyewear conglomerate EssilorLuxottica, a quick search suggests it remains a rare, independent brand—though the hosts jokingly wonder "for how long" that will last. Meanwhile, the co-host notes they are intentionally sporting their Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses, which they thoroughly enjoyed using during their time in Hawaii.

- Brand Name: Meller (m e l l e r) - Price Point: $59 for polarized lenses - Competitor Context: Independent, not currently owned by EssilorLuxottica

[19:16](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1444rkhQwVc&t=1156s) Summer Sports Docuseries and Live Event Announcements

To bring the summer carve-out theme home, the discussion moves to sports docuseries on Netflix. Even though it is summertime with no active NFL games, a host caught up on the *Quarterback* series from the previous year and the newer *Receiver* series. They express absolute fascination with the immense mental workload and pressure unique to an elite NFL quarterback, noting that no other large team sport relies so heavily on a single position. Watching *Receiver* provided an entertaining contrast, highlighting the drastically different stakes, preparation styles, and pressures between the players throwing the ball and those on the receiving end.

The episode concludes with a sign-off for this casual summer mini-episode. The hosts look forward to their upcoming live event on September 10th in San Francisco, teasing an exciting lineup that includes Mark Zuckerberg alongside other special guests. Listeners are encouraged to coordinate meetups, lunches, and dinners using the Acquired Slack channel, with tickets officially on sale. They give a massive shoutout to their partners at JPMorgan Payments, noting that the collaboration feels like their team has "tripled or quadrupled in size" as they work heroically to deliver an unforgettable live event.

- Event Date: September 10th in San Francisco - Featured Guest: Mark Zuckerberg - Event Partner: JPMorgan Payments - Community Coordination: acquired.fm/slack and tickets at acquired.fm/sf

Reading summary

During a planned six-week production hiatus, Acquired co-hosts Ben Gilbert and David Rosenthal reflect on an unprecedented growth surge driven by national media coverage, announce an arena-scale live show, and formalize a split between narrative history episodes and executive interviews. Media Coverage Sparks Unprecedented Listener Growth (3:22) A profile authored by Ben Cohen for The Wall Street Journal's "Science of Success" column triggered a dramatic inflection point for the podcast, driving it to the number one global ranking on both Apple Podcasts and Spotify. This placement sustained organic discovery via browse tabs for weeks, challenging Rosenthal's expectation that print journalism rarely converts readers into audio listeners. The Paradox of Analyzing Outlier Business Models (8:28) Gilbert noted a core paradox in the show's premise: while Acquired focuses on business playbooks, the companies studied are extreme outliers operating near-monopolies in high-margin markets, meaning their mature strategies are rarely reproducible for standard businesses. Consequently, the hosts emphasize a company's early years to isolate the true drivers of initial momentum. Arena Live Show at Chase Center (0:00) The hosts are directing their production hiatus toward preparing an arena event on September 10 at San Francisco's Chase Center, presented in partnership with JP Morgan Payments. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg is slated as a featured guest, with ticket pricing set at $100 for floor seats and $50 for arena sections, inclusive of fees. Structural Separation of Main Feed and AQ2 (11:13) To preserve the core show's format—multi-hour deep dives based on hundreds of hours of independent research by both hosts—executive interviews will now live permanently on the secondary feed, AQ2. While exceptional long-form protagonist discussions have previously run on the main feed, standard Q&A interviews will transition to AQ2, including an upcoming feature with NFL legend and venture capitalist Joe Montana. Parental and Lifestyle Recommendations (13:35) In the carve-outs segment, Gilbert recommended the Thule Urban Glide 3 running stroller as his son reached the six-month mark. Rosenthal reviewed Disney's Aulani Resort in Hawaii as a pragmatic, highly functional destination tailored to families with young children rather than a luxury getaway. Additional picks included polarized sunglasses from independent brand Meller, Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses, and Netflix sports docuseries Quarterback and Receiver. The hosts conclude by encouraging community meetups around the September 10 Chase Center gathering, balancing rapid institutional growth against the challenge of keeping their foundational research-driven format intact.

Morgan Payments。 - **社区与购票信息**:听众可通过 `acquired.fm/slack` 策划线下聚会,并访问 `acquired.fm/sf` 购买现场门票。 — David > [20:36](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1444rkhQwVc&t=1236s) J.P. [0:00] hello acquired listeners and happy [0:03] summer David happy summer indeed I feel [0:06] like a kid let out of school I know you [0:09] just got back from Hawaii are you [0:10] feeling refreshed I am feeling as [0:13] refreshed and relaxed as the father of a [0:15] thre month-old and three-year-old can [0:18] possibly be yeah I bet we'll get to that [0:21] in carv outs I'm sure yep listeners we [0:26] after 10e straight of never taking any [0:28] time off of acquired we're doing like 6 [0:31] weeks off over the summer and it turns [0:33] out that doesn't actually mean 6 weeks [0:35] off of work for you and I David it means [0:37] 6 weeks of not making an episode because [0:40] we are putting all of our energy and [0:42] focus into September 10th at the chase [0:45] Center David what are we doing hell yeah [0:49] Chase Center live show in partnership [0:52] with our good friends at JP Morgan [0:54] payments this is going to be as many of [0:57] you have already heard the biggest thing [0:59] that we have ever done this is where the [1:01] Warriors play It's the brand new arena [1:04] in the middle of downtown San Francisco [1:06] and Mark Zuckerberg is going to be there [1:10] with us on stage he's only one of the [1:12] acts that we are planning we've been [1:15] very very busy we're pulling out all the [1:17] stops it's going to be an amazing event [1:20] yeah we'll have some fun surprises for [1:22] everyone that we're not planning to [1:23] share in advance so if you're free [1:26] September 10th or if you can make [1:27] yourselves free be in San Francisco it's [1:29] funny we announced many months ago on [1:31] the show save the date but then we [1:33] actually haven't had an episode since [1:35] tickets have been on sale and so despite [1:37] the fact that we emailed a lot of you [1:39] and we tweeted and we put it in the [1:41] slack David and I were on the phone [1:42] yesterday we were like huh we should [1:43] probably let people who just listen to [1:45] the podcast and don't follow acquired [1:48] anywhere else know about it too so [1:50] acquired. fmsf we really hope to see you [1:53] there our goal is really just to feel [1:55] like the biggest celebration and [1:58] community of like-minded listeners [2:00] possible almost like the Omaha for Tech [2:02] or Omaha on the west coast it's going to [2:04] be great listeners are organizing a [2:07] bunch of events around the show itself [2:10] in the days before and after it's going [2:13] to be really kind of like the Omaha [2:15] weekend so if you want to stay up to [2:17] date on all that look for announcements [2:19] in the slack in the coming weeks yep and [2:22] feel free to plan your own too at the [2:23] end of the day even before announcing [2:25] this on the podcast here there are [2:28] several thousand of you who have bought [2:30] tickets and are coming and so no one [2:32] venue except for the chase Center is [2:34] going to hold us all anyway so if you're [2:35] coming and you want to plan dinners or [2:37] happy hours or company meetups or [2:39] anything please just feel free to take [2:41] the initiative do that post in slack [2:43] we'd love for it to happen the other [2:44] thing we should say here there's two [2:46] ticket prices Allin price it's $100 for [2:50] floor seats which are almost gone at [2:52] this point in time and $50 for [2:55] everywhere else in the arena that's it [2:57] that's all in that includes Ticket [2:59] Master fees [3:00] we're pretty sure this is the cheapest [3:02] event that has ever been put on ticket [3:04] pricewise at the chase Center definitely [3:07] not the cheapest event production budget [3:09] wise but we're really proud of that we [3:11] want this to be open and available and [3:13] accessible to everybody we want as many [3:15] of you there as can make it this is like [3:18] a party that we want to throw for [3:20] everyone yep well David now that we have [3:23] a few minutes here and we're not mid [3:25] episode should we reflect on the last [3:28] few months in acquir land we thought [3:30] listeners would be interested in a [3:32] little bit of a peak behind the scenes [3:34] uh it's been a hell of a ride the last [3:36] couple months [3:38] Ben I don't think I've even really till [3:41] leaving for Hawaii whatever it was 10 [3:42] days ago had a chance to stop and [3:45] reflect on this my second daughter was [3:47] born at the end of April and then the [3:49] Wall Street Journal article about us [3:51] came out I think like two weeks later so [3:53] it's just been a whirlwind yeah it's [3:55] funny it's been one of these things [3:57] people have asked what is the impact [4:00] On The Wall Street Journal profile and [4:03] it's hard to disambiguate the two things [4:06] that happen concurrently that piece [4:09] which is the best encapsulation of what [4:12] acquired is that has ever been published [4:15] there's sort of been two canonical [4:16] pieces David lky's wonderful piece in [4:18] Fast Company last year following the [4:20] production of the Nike episode really [4:22] dives into the making of an episode and [4:24] what that is all about and this one is [4:26] kind of like what is acquired today and [4:28] how did this thing come come to be and [4:31] what happened is when that article came [4:35] out acquir became the number one podcast [4:39] on both Spotify and apple charts in the [4:42] world that is a mindblowing sentence [4:45] that is not something that we ever ever [4:48] thought no would even be remotely within [4:50] the realm of possibility no and what [4:53] that led to is number one has staying [4:55] power because if anybody opens up Apple [4:57] podcast right now and hit the browse tab [4:59] you can very clearly see the number one [5:01] podcast is the one centered on your [5:03] screen that you're curious about [5:05] checking out so all of the goodness that [5:08] came from the wsj piece was then [5:10] massively Amplified over the course of [5:12] weeks and months because we just stayed [5:15] the number one podcast in this [5:16] self-fulfilling prophecy way across both [5:20] giant podcasting platforms so to just [5:23] add some numbers to that because we've [5:25] gotten the question so many times we [5:27] were thinking we should just talk about [5:28] it on air three [5:31] 117,000 new subscribers or followers [5:34] depending on whether you're using apple [5:36] or spotify's parament have followed the [5:39] show since the Wall Street Journal piece [5:42] went live and for context in January [5:46] coming into the year we estimated our [5:49] listener base was about 500,000 people [5:52] it was a major event yes and so David I [5:55] had always sort of been of this belief [5:58] especially when I'm working with with [5:59] startups like don't count on a single [6:01] press article being trajectory changing [6:04] for you that's generally true except [6:06] when it isn't yeah like all the [6:09] companies we cover on the show it's the [6:10] exceptions that prove the rule here it [6:12] was a wonderful piece Ben Cohen who [6:14] wrote it at the journal is a excellent [6:17] journalist I have the utmost respect for [6:19] him he writes the science of success [6:21] column at the journal that this was part [6:23] of it was just one of those lightning in [6:25] a bottle moments I don't know how to [6:28] describe it otherwise yeah so part of [6:31] this is a welcome to all of you who are [6:33] new listeners to the show you know David [6:35] and I have been doing this for close to [6:37] 10 years now the audience has grown [6:40] slowly and it doubled organically every [6:42] year for the first nine years and one [6:45] way to think about that because we don't [6:47] really do paid marketing what that means [6:50] is the whole audience base on average [6:53] told one friend who stuck around and [6:56] listened to the show every year so in [6:58] some sense that's almost nothing to [7:00] write home about but on the other hand [7:01] it actually just kept happening and the [7:03] cool thing is it meant that it built the [7:06] audience base that we really wanted cuz [7:09] everyone personally recommended it to a [7:11] friend rather than having an explosive [7:13] growth moment and so that's why the [7:15] slack is such a wonderful and civil [7:17] place you know it's not like this [7:19] community that sort of showed up out of [7:20] nowhere it's this community that's been [7:22] slowly building organically by inviting [7:24] other people who they know in from The [7:26] Real World over time and then if I could [7:29] say what would be the single best growth [7:31] event if we were going to have a [7:34] outsized external force that brought a [7:36] bunch of audience The Wall Street [7:38] Journal is the exact Right audience to [7:40] join the rest of you I was going to say [7:42] the same thing yeah wsj subscribers are [7:45] among the most well-educated thoughtful [7:47] business people in the world who love [7:50] nning out on this stuff we're delighted [7:52] to have anybody here who just found out [7:53] because you read the wsj totally other [7:56] thing that was just so surprising about [7:58] this hell I used to work at the Wall [8:00] Street Journal a long long time ago [8:02] briefly early in my career so I identify [8:05] with it deeply and love the publication [8:07] and was so glad they were going to cover [8:09] us but I at least have always believed [8:12] that people aren't going to discover [8:14] podcasts by reading about a podcast or [8:16] in another medium if you read about [8:18] something you're probably not going to [8:20] go open up your phone and your podcast [8:23] player and hit subscribe or you're in [8:24] some other modality right but this [8:28] proved us wrong the dirty secret behind [8:30] acquired is every episode is about the [8:32] exception every company we talk about is [8:34] the most extreme outlier I often find [8:37] myself wondering even though we have [8:39] this Playbook and this Lessons Learned [8:41] is the real Playbook that you can't [8:44] learn any lessons because they're such [8:47] extreme outliers you know these big tech [8:49] companies they're all monopolies or near [8:50] monopolies in the largest and most [8:53] profitable markets in the world well [8:55] like no one else's business is that and [8:57] so the lesson you can draw from a cash [9:00] gusher that is extremely difficult to [9:03] disrupt some of the things you can apply [9:05] to building your business but it's much [9:06] more interesting which is of course why [9:08] we do the history and facts to go look [9:10] at them in their first few years of life [9:13] to understand how they catapulted to the [9:15] position rather than trying to learn [9:17] something about the companies as you [9:18] perceive them today it feels like a [9:21] visceral manifestation to you and me of [9:23] this takeaway from all of our episodes [9:26] every great success story is [9:28] idiosyncratic yes you can't plan this [9:31] and they all are their own Journeys it's [9:34] why we can make a four or five hour [9:36] episode about all these different [9:38] companies and it's not just well they [9:40] did the same thing that the other [9:41] companies did yeah part of this takeaway [9:43] for me is it's sort of unclear if and [9:46] what would ever be a larged outsized [9:48] growth event like when you look at our [9:50] chart it's perfectly smooth for almost a [9:53] decade until there's this one point [9:55] where you can see whoa something clearly [9:56] happened and numbers jumped up from May [9:58] to now and I don't know that you can [10:00] ever really plan for those so a PR [10:03] person emailed me how did you pitch that [10:04] piece to the journal and I was just [10:06] laughing like we didn't yeah there's no [10:09] way you could possibly anticipate [10:12] something like this happening and then [10:13] execute a PR strategy to try to make it [10:16] happen maybe other people know [10:18] differently but I've never once seen [10:21] that be the way that things like this [10:23] happen well let's see things we wanted [10:26] to do today chat about the arena show oh [10:29] one other note on that a few people have [10:31] emailed us and said my whole company's [10:33] coming we even had a parent email us and [10:35] say my 13-year-old wants to have his [10:37] birthday party by bringing all of his [10:39] friends to the live show which is the [10:41] coolest thing ever coolest thing ever [10:43] and crazy that's real if you're [10:45] interested in something like that to [10:47] email us hello acquire. FM for big group [10:50] ticket buys and there's a special office [10:52] that we can hook you up with that helps [10:54] deal with that yeah we've had a few [10:56] companies get in touch with us and say I [10:58] did they remote first or they located [11:00] somewhere else like oh we're going to do [11:02] our fall off site as a company in San [11:05] Francisco for the live show which is [11:06] super cool so yes if you want to do [11:08] anything like that hello at acquired. FM [11:11] we'll make it happen we'd love to have [11:12] you here yep the other thing that we [11:15] wanted to do we've got one more sort of [11:17] announcement on show structure and then [11:19] carve outs so the show structure thing [11:21] is as you may have guessed or observed [11:26] the thing that makes acquired episodes [11:29] unique is the format of David and I [11:34] sitting down doing the hundreds of hours [11:36] of research coming together with [11:38] separate prepared Minds with separate [11:41] understandings of the history and with [11:43] separate beliefs about what made this [11:45] business work and then doing our 4-Hour [11:48] format to tell the story and unpack why [11:51] the business worked and that's very [11:54] different than an interview show where [11:56] you have a great guest on where [11:58] everybody knows their name and you [11:59] interview them and then you say so long [12:01] folks and you sign off there are many of [12:03] those shows and there are many excellent [12:06] excellent of those shows occasionally we [12:09] do have the opportunity to interview [12:11] someone like Jensen like Charlie like [12:14] Dar from Uber where we have covered the [12:16] business in the past or perhaps someone [12:18] like Howard Schultz is willing to spend [12:20] the five six hours with us that it takes [12:22] to do our standard format with them [12:25] present but what we've basically done is [12:27] we've decided that the main show [12:29] with few exceptions is for doing our [12:32] core 4our format of David and I together [12:35] occasionally we will follow that up with [12:37] an interview with the protagonist after [12:39] we've had a chance to really do our [12:40] thing but that kind of leaves us with a [12:43] whole bunch of opportunity to do great [12:45] interviews but just that are not quite [12:48] Acquired and so aq2 has really become [12:51] the place where we're doing all of that [12:52] now and so if you like interviews like [12:55] the one we did with the synopsis founder [12:57] and the synopsis CEO to kind of do a [12:59] deep dive on the state of semis today or [13:02] the next one we have coming out is an [13:03] interview with Joe Montana who managed [13:05] to shift from being one of the best [13:06] football players of all time you know [13:08] many time Super Bowl MVP to a really [13:11] excellent venture capitalist to an [13:13] exceptional investor yes yeah and we've [13:16] got several other public company CEOs [13:19] lined up that we're going to be doing on [13:21] aq2 soon so well David and I are taking [13:23] some time to breathe prep for the arena [13:26] show if you're feeling like you want to [13:28] experience some more required and you've [13:29] already gone through the back catalog [13:31] aq2 is the place to tune in for those as [13:33] they come out indeed all right to bring [13:36] us home here for our little summer [13:39] session carv outs car outs Ben we were [13:42] about to hit record and you stopped and [13:44] you said wait a minute I got to walk [13:45] around my house I am so excited to hear [13:47] what you came back to us with all right [13:49] so we may have to start doing this on [13:51] the show or we may hear a Revolt if we [13:54] start doing this I don't know now that [13:55] you and I both have small children [13:57] there's like a whole second C atory of [13:59] goods that are parent related baby carve [14:02] outs yeah parent carve outs so I'll do [14:05] my parent carve out first on the holiday [14:08] special I gave two stroller [14:09] recommendations so in keeping with [14:11] tradition I'm doing a third stroller [14:14] recommendation my father's day gift it [14:16] was the most bed Gilbert thing ever I [14:17] love it wait was your father's day gift [14:20] a stroller it [14:22] was it was a running stroller yes cuz it [14:26] kind of perfectly aligned with my son [14:28] turning 6 months old [14:29] which is when it's reasonably safe for [14:31] them to be in a running stroller and I [14:34] will tell you he loves it running [14:36] through the park near our house trees [14:38] whizzing by whether it's wake time or [14:40] nap time it's great I get the miles in [14:43] I've been ramping up by running again [14:45] which is you know now that I have a [14:47] 9-month-old a thing you can kind of [14:48] start doing again but the Tuli or thuli [14:52] I don't exactly know how to pronounce it [14:54] I never know how to pronounce it yeah [14:56] thle I'm going to mess it up with my [14:58] American but I think it's colloquially [14:59] referred to in America as Tuli T hu l e [15:02] is the brand right yes the urban Glide 3 [15:06] is excellent and I highly recommend it [15:08] to anyone who is thinking about running [15:10] with a small child it's funny I never [15:13] got into the running stroller Running [15:16] With Children thing I think I would [15:18] really enjoy it but it's so hilly here [15:20] in San Francisco yeah I can't imagine [15:22] pushing that thing up you know yeah I've [15:24] been more in carrier mode and then doing [15:27] hikes with the baby the carrier which [15:30] I'm now back in that world with baby [15:32] number two here well okay great we'll [15:34] trade off you did your parent carve out [15:37] I'm going to do my parent carve out then [15:38] I'll kick it back to you so mine [15:40] actually is what you started the show [15:42] off with was my time in Hawaii so our [15:46] second daughter just turned 3 months old [15:48] we wanted to do a family vacation while [15:50] we're having this little acquired Hiatus [15:52] and before Jenny goes back to work and [15:55] we were thinking what could we possibly [15:57] do with like a year old and a [15:59] 3-month-old in to that is going to be [16:02] the least bit enjoyable or relaxing as a [16:05] family vacation and we scoured the earth [16:09] and the best idea that we came up with [16:12] was the Disney Resort in Hawaii and it [16:16] was awesome let me tell you this place [16:17] it's called Alani it was perfect so it [16:21] is not the nicest Resort it is not a [16:24] Disney park there's no like rides or [16:26] stuff you know as far as Disney goes [16:28] it's actually fairly light touch so it's [16:30] not the best Disney Experience it's not [16:32] the prettiest beach but you are really [16:34] selling it it is not spiky in any [16:38] category but the VIN diagram of needs of [16:41] like you have a young family you are a [16:44] harried parent you want something like a [16:47] Hawaii vacation where you can have some [16:50] hope of getting a little bit of [16:52] relaxation in and everyone will have a [16:55] good enough time like man it Nails the [16:59] Center of that V diagram it was truly [17:02] like the very best trip we could have [17:04] done at this stage in our lives that is [17:07] great to know highly highly recommend [17:09] for anybody in the same life phase [17:11] although there were people of families [17:13] of All Phases there there weren't many [17:15] non-families there I will say but there [17:18] were big family reunions happening there [17:20] were parents with pre-teens there were [17:22] parents with teens I was like a little [17:24] surprised by that but I mean hey who [17:26] doesn't love Disney and who doesn't love [17:27] Hawaii yeah I highly highly highly [17:30] recommended especially with young [17:32] children all right great to know all [17:34] right my adults carve out I don't [17:38] know my uh carve out that anyone can [17:41] appreciate is a sunglasses brand called [17:44] meler m e l l e r when I was at my [17:47] buddy's wedding in C earlier this summer [17:51] and I was out walking around the shops [17:52] and I forgot my sunglasses because I [17:53] left super early in the morning and I [17:55] just grabbed these because they were at [17:57] the store and I was like oh those look [17:58] pretty cool they are the highest quality [18:01] lenses that I have ever had in a pair of [18:04] sunglasses and maybe it's because I just [18:06] always buy cheap throwaway sunglasses [18:08] cuz I lose them all the time but 59 [18:10] bucks polarized it's the type of lens [18:14] where you put them on and you can see [18:16] things that are further away clearer [18:19] normally when you put some form of glass [18:20] in front of your eye it distorts a [18:22] little bit yeah right it's not going to [18:24] get any better than your own clear [18:26] eyesight but I noticed that I put these [18:28] on and I can suddenly see better than I [18:31] can with my own plain eyes so wow I'm [18:33] like now a loyalist M M sunglasses is it [18:37] a SLR leaa brand or is it an indie [18:40] that's a great question I mean my [18:42] general answer when anyone asks is that [18:44] SLR luoa would be yes of course it is [18:46] just because it's the default answer for [18:48] all the brands you know it's a safe bet [18:50] yeah you know Ray bands and Oakley and [18:52] everything but I don't think so well [18:54] speaking of I am intentionally wearing [18:57] my rayb band metas here to prepare I see [18:59] you are I especially enjoyed these in [19:01] Hawaii they were great yeah they look [19:04] great but no I don't think unless my [19:07] quick Google was wrong that I think [19:09] Miller is not SLR L Exotica independent [19:12] wow wow the question is for how long [19:16] well to bring home on our summer [19:18] carveout theme my carve outs for [19:21] everyone are it's summertime which means [19:25] sadly no NFL but with the little baby I [19:29] finally got around to watching the [19:31] Netflix quarterback series from last [19:33] year and then the new receiver series [19:37] they're so good I love them both the [19:39] quarterback series especially there's no [19:43] other position in sports or at least [19:46] sports that I am familiar with that are [19:49] like large team sports where so much of [19:51] the game hinges on that one person just [19:54] following like the amount of mental work [19:56] that goes into being an Elite NFL [19:59] quarterback and then just the pressure [20:01] that these guys are under is so immense [20:05] receiver was funny too like I enjoyed [20:07] receiver almost equally as much but it's [20:10] so funny to watch the difference between [20:13] the preparation and the pressure that [20:14] the quarterbacks are under versus what [20:16] the receivers are doing very very [20:20] different Stakes although they are [20:22] obviously the receiving end of what the [20:24] quarterbacks are throwing all right on [20:26] my list well with that listeners thank [20:29] you for tuning in to our Ben and David
