Detailed notes

## Detailed walkthrough ### [00:00](https://www.bilibili.com/video/BV13fnv6GEt4?t=0s) Q3

[01:33](https://www.bilibili.com/video/BV13fnv6GEt4?t=93s) Q4

```mermaid flowchart LR accTitle: Netflix Q4 Financial Guidance Comparison accDescr: Diagram contrasting decelerating revenue growth against expanding operating margins and earnings per share for Netflix Q4. subgraph Revenue["营收端 (增速放缓)"] A["过去一年增速: ~18%"] --> B["Q4 预期增速: 11.5%"] end subgraph Profitability["盈利端 (利润扩张)"] C["营业利润: 同比 +18%"] D["营业利润率: 同比 +1.5%"] E["每股收益 (EPS): 同比 +19.6%"] end ```
然而在盈利能力方面,公司依然展现出出色的提效能力: - 第四季度营业利润预计同比增长 18%,营业利润率同比扩大 1.5 个百分点。 - 每股收益(EPS)预计同比强劲增长 19.6%,逼近 20% 大关。
正如 Daniel Pronk 总结道:“So Netflix's revenue is decelerating, but it's doing a good job expanding its margins to continue growing its profits.” 这表明公司正在通过不断优化成本结构和释放经营杠杆,在顶层营收失速的大背景下守住利润底线。
[02:21](https://www.bilibili.com/video/BV13fnv6GEt4?t=141s) 会员留存向好与 Q4 广告收入指引大跌 10%
财报进一步分析指出,第三季度的稳健表现主要由三大核心驱动因素拉动:会员规模扩充、会员订阅提价以及广告业务赋能。会员留存方面传递了诸多积极信号,不仅整体 Retention 处于健康区间,客户流失率(Churn)也在持续改善,这意味着现有存量客户的留存黏性更强。
然而,真正触发盘后股价大跌 6% 的深层导火索隐藏在第四季度的细分指引中。尽管第四季度整体营收预期仅比原先预测微幅下调了 0.2%,但结构拆解暴露了巨大的增长隐患: - 核心订阅服务收入(Subscription revenue)实际上保持稳健。 - 广告业务收入指引被大幅削减了约 10%,缩水金额高达近 3 亿美元。
广告业务一直被二级市场定性为奈飞中长期的“下一代核心增长引擎”以及毛利率进一步抬升的关键支柱。在已经深入第四季度经营周期的节点上,管理层突然将广告收入下调 10%,说明第四季度的广告实际商业化变现遭遇了相当严峻的阻力,直接戳破了市场对于广告快速变现的高预期。
[03:36](https://www.bilibili.com/video/BV13fnv6GEt4?t=216s) 激烈的内容博弈与 AI 时代的注意力争夺危机
在财报阐述中,奈飞坦言行业正面临极其激烈的竞争,海量内容的井喷式爆发正在无休止地争夺消费者的注意力,公司必须依赖极其顶尖的执行力才能维持现有地位,并承认自身在诸多环节依然存在提升空间。
这番陈述直接点出了 Daniel Pronk 不愿重仓奈飞的底层核心逻辑。他指出,随着时间推移,市场上可供选择的内容库只会越来越庞大,争夺用户有限时间的阻力将呈指数级增加,在生成式人工智能(Generative AI)技术赋能内容创作门槛大幅降低的时代更是如此。
更致命的是竞争对手的商业生态优势。对于亚马逊(Amazon Prime)和谷歌(Google/YouTube)等科技巨头而言,流媒体视频本质上仅仅是其主营商业闭环上的一个“附加服务(Add-on)”,它们背靠主业拥有更为雄厚充沛的现金流与算力资源。Daniel Pronk 一针见血地指出:“To put it simply, when I think about Netflix competing with Amazon and Netflix is not really the horse that I would bet on.”
[04:30](https://www.bilibili.com/video/BV13fnv6GEt4?t=270s) 亚太增长虚实与全球观看时长停滞
面对投资者对用户观看时长增长(Watch time growth)停滞的焦虑,奈飞试图在财报中以区域亮点提振信心。管理层重点列举了印度市场的突破,指出该地区总观看时长同比大幅攀升 24%。但 Daniel Pronk 深入拆解后指出,该地区单用户平均观看时长的同比增速仅处于中低个位数(Low to mid single digits),并未展现出极具爆发力的单体黏性。
将视野放大至全球大盘,用户参与度停滞的危机更加明显: - 上一季度披露的数据显示,全球会员总观看时长同比仅增长 2%。 - 2025 年全年,该项总观看时长指标的同比增幅仅有 1.5%。
| 测算情景 | 假设会员数增速 | 全球总观看时长增速 | 最终反映的商业实质 | |:--- |:--- |:--- |:--- | | **情景 A** | ~5% | ~2% | **单用户平均参与度下滑**:人均收看时长随时间被持续稀释 | | **情景 B** | ~2% | ~2% | **会员规模增长陷入停滞**:单客时长持平下总用户见顶 |
Daniel Pronk 直言:“And in my opinion, both of these suggestions are bad. It either means engagement is declining or membership growth is very slow.”
与此同时,全美收视调研数据显示,奈飞在全美电视屏幕上的收视时长份额(US TV time market share)正在节节败退,而第一大竞争对手 YouTube 却在持续攻城略地夺取份额。这直观反映出奈飞最核心的护城河正在遭遇竞争对手的实质性侵蚀,在行业主战场上处于下风。
[05:58](https://www.bilibili.com/video/BV13fnv6GEt4?t=358s) 区域营收分化与频繁提价下的流失率隐患
对不同大区营业收入增速的纵向解构表明,奈飞正在面临全球性的增长放缓: - **美加本土市场(UCAN)**:增速出现微幅反弹。 - **欧洲、中东及非洲市场(EMEA)**:营收增速持续回落。 - **拉美市场(LATAM)**:增速进一步出现放缓。 - **亚太市场(APAC)**:增速再次显著下滑。
通常被寄予厚望的下沉与增量海外区域(如亚太市场)不仅体量仅为主力本土市场的五分之一左右,其营收增长动能反而率先显出疲态。
```mermaid flowchart TD accTitle: Price Increases vs US Revenue Growth Breakdown accDescr: Flowchart illustrating how subscription price hikes explain Netflix's 11% US revenue growth with flat membership. subgraph PriceHikes["过去一年多美国核心档位调价幅度"] H1["带广告标准版 (Standard ads): +12.5%"] H2["无广告标准版 (Standard ad free): +11%"] H3["高级无广告版 (Premium ad free): +8%"] end subgraph RevenueOutcome["美加地区营收结果"] R1["美国区域实际营收增速: 11%"] end PriceHikes -->|调价幅度完全覆盖营收增幅| R1 R1 --> Infer["核心推论: 实际存量会员净增接近停滞,全靠提价驱动"] ```

为了说明消费者支付意愿的心理阈值,Daniel Pronk 举了一个极端的假设案例:“If Netflix were to double its prices to $50 per month, how many people do you think would cancel tomorrow?”

[07:50](https://www.bilibili.com/video/BV13fnv6GEt4?t=470s)

[10:00](https://www.bilibili.com/video/BV13fnv6GEt4?t=600s) Normalized Valuation Multiples and Fundamental Growth Limits

When evaluating Netflix's valuation metrics on major stock screening platforms, investors will observe an unadjusted price-to-earnings ratio sitting at roughly 20. However, Daniel Pronk emphasizes that this surface-level multiple is distorted by a substantial one-time acquisition breakup fee payment that artificially inflated net income. When stripping out that one-off windfall to look at normalized earnings—and factoring in the post-earnings after-hours share price drop—Netflix is currently trading at approximately 22 times trailing twelve months (TTM) earnings and roughly 20 times forward earnings. From a purely quantitative perspective, Daniel notes that if the company can maintain a 10% top-line compound growth rate while expanding operating margins to yield 15% annualized earnings growth, the current entry price presents an appealing case. Specifically, Daniel Pronk states: “In my opinion, if Netflix can sustain 10% revenue growth and continue expanding margins to achieve 15% earnings growth over the longer term, then the stock does actually look interesting here.”

Beneath the headline valuation, however, Daniel expresses deep reservations regarding the durability of Netflix's competitive moat, pointing out that management itself essentially acknowledged these headwinds by repeatedly highlighting that streaming industry competition remains fierce and is escalating further. He warns that revenue expansion is at risk of decelerating below 10%, which poses a serious structural hurdle because profit margins cannot expand indefinitely. Once margin optimization hits its natural ceiling, earnings growth will inevitably decelerate to match top-line revenue growth. Compounding this challenge, Netflix's recent revenue gains have been predominantly engineered through successive subscription price hikes and the rollout of advertising tiers rather than organic, volume-driven membership growth. Daniel stresses that there is an inevitable upper boundary to consumer price tolerance, warning that aggressive price increases will eventually accelerate subscriber churn.

With membership growth slowing and pricing power approaching its practical ceiling, the burden of driving incremental top-line expansion falls squarely on the nascent advertising business. While Daniel acknowledges that Netflix's ad tier will likely gain traction over the long run, he remains skeptical of the core platform's near-term growth drivers and their structural limits. Summing up his investment verdict, Daniel Pronk remarks: “And for myself, I am more skeptical than confident in this business, so I do not have enough conviction for it to interest me, even at today's prices in after-hours trading.” He concludes by framing the central dilemma for viewers—whether Netflix's competitive moat is being permanently degraded by rivals—before announcing that his next earnings analysis will cover Meta's upcoming quarterly financial results.

- **Unadjusted vs. Normalized P/E**: Stock platforms show an unadjusted P/E of ~20 due to one-time acquisition breakup fee income; on a normalized basis accounting for the after-hours drop, Netflix trades at ~22x trailing earnings and ~20x forward earnings. - **Hypothetical Bull Case**: Requires sustaining 10% revenue CAGR alongside margin expansion that delivers 15% long-term net earnings growth. - **Top-Line Deceleration**: Revenue growth faces high probability of slipping below 10% as subscriber volume growth slows down. - **Limits to Pricing Power**: Heavy reliance on periodic subscription price hikes threatens to trigger heightened subscriber churn once pricing crosses consumer psychological thresholds. - **Margin Expansion Ceiling**: Operating margins cannot expand forever; earnings growth must eventually slow to track top-line revenue growth. - **Ad Business Reliance**: Advertising remains the primary unconstrained growth pillar, placing outsized execution pressure on the ad tier to offset stagnation in core drivers. - **Author Stance**: Daniel Pronk maintains low conviction due to moat erosion and competitive pressures, choosing to remain on the sidelines despite the post-earnings pullback.

Netflix Stock Is Crashing - What You Need To Know

Reading summary

Original transcript

[0:00] Netflix stock is down almost 6% in after hours trading after announcing its Q3 report. This is on top of the stock being down almost 50% from its all-time highs before the report, and it looks like investors were once again not happy with Netflix's earnings. I don't own Netflix in my portfolio, but many of my viewers ask me to cover Netflix every quarter. So in today's video, I want to take a look at the numbers and try to give you as objective as possible. So let's dive into it. All right, so let's start right from the top. And in this first screenshot, we can see that Netflix's revenue came in up 12% year over year and 11% on an FX neutral basis, which was in line with their previous forecasts. Operating margin was 34.6% up from 28.2% last year, which was actually ahead of their forecast. For the full year of 2026, margin of 31.5%. This is the first thing that investors are not going to like, because the previous guidance for 2026 was $51.2 billion in revenue. So they've lowered their revenue guidance by $100 million. It's not a lot, but this has got to be one of the things the market is not liking here. They also said member response to 2026 pricing changes has been consistent with previous price changes. So the story for Q3 was that revenue was in line and operating income came in ahead, but the guide for the fourth quarter was weaker than expected. This next screenshot shows us a table of Netflix's key metrics And for the fourth quarter, Netflix is expecting to see 11.5% revenue growth. And in this table, you can clearly see the continued revenue deceleration. It's gone from almost 18% to 11.5% within just one year. However, operating income is expected to be up 18% year-over-year for the fourth quarter, with margins up 1.5%, and then earnings per share is expected to be up 19.6%, which is obviously almost 20% earnings per share growth. So Netflix's revenue is decelerating, but it's doing a good job expanding its margins to continue growing its profits. Moving on to the next screenshot, here Netflix tells us that the Q3 strength was driven by increases in memberships, pricing, and advertising. Membership growth benefited from a continued healthy retention, and they say that churn is continuing to improve. So their customers are sticking around longer and they're not churning as much. All of this is actually good to see. Moving on though, here they elaborate on their Q4 guide, and they say that the Q4 guide is 0.2% below previous estimates, which really is not that much. And you may be asking, how does them lowering their revenue guidance by 0.2% justify a 6% decline to the share price in after hours? Here they say subscription revenue is actually or $300 million. The advertising revenue is supposed to be the next huge growth driver and margin expander for the business. So seeing its guide come down by 10% is not what the market wanted to see, especially when we're already so far into the fourth quarter. So the Q4 advertising revenue must be coming in quite weak for them to lower the guidance so much. Further on in the report, Netflix says intense competition and an explosion of content is competing for consumer attention, and they need excellent execution to keep up. They said there's room for them to do better as well. why I don't own Netflix. I think more and more content and choices will happen over time, and it's going to become more challenging to compete for consumer attention, especially in the world of generative AI. I also don't like that Netflix is essentially an add-on that Amazon and Google both have to their main businesses, and they compete in the same spaces, and those companies have much more resources as well. To put it simply, when I think about Netflix competing with Amazon and Netflix is not really the horse that I would bet on. Moving on to the next screenshot though, Netflix said they know about investor concerns over membership watch time growth, and they want to start accelerating this metric again. They then show how India watch time hours grew 24%, with per member hours growing low to mid single digits. This, in my opinion, is still not bullish in that market per member watch time is still not growing all that much. Now, for perspective, last quarter, they shared that membership watch [5:00] is up 2% year over year in total, not per member. And in 2025, this metric was only up 1.5%. Now think about it. If Netflix is growing members at, let's say 5%, then membership watch time growth of only 2% means each member is watching less over time. Or, if members are watching the same amount, then it means that total members are only growing by about 2%. And in my opinion, both of these suggestions are bad. it either means engagement is declining or membership growth is very slow. It was also recently reported that Netflix's US TV time market share is declining, and that YouTube is growing and continuing to take more and more share. This, to me, shows that Netflix's moat is successfully being attacked. and its number one main competitor is winning in its arena. And overall, this is not bullish for Netflix, in my opinion. Getting back over to Netflix's report, this table shows Netflix's revenue growth per region, And here we can see that in the US and Canada, they actually saw a slight acceleration. In the Europe region, they continued to see deceleration. In Latin America, they decelerated again. And then lastly, in the Asia-Pacific region, they decelerated once again. So you can see that Netflix's revenue growth rates have been consistently decelerating across all regions. And these lower regions are meant to be their growth markets. And I have been calling this out for the past few quarters. see, especially considering that the Asia-Pacific market, for example, is about one-fifth the size of their main market. Now, what's also interesting is Netflix has increased its U.S. subscription prices two times in a little over the past year. Standard ads saw a 12.5% increase, standard ad free was 11%, and premium ad free was 8%. In the U.S., this means that Netflix's 11% revenue growth that there was no churn and their members stayed flat on a year-over-year basis. This ultimately suggests that Netflix's US members are not growing that much, and that Netflix's growth comes from price increases and advertising revenue growth now. To be clear, this isn't all that bad, but I do wonder how much Netflix can continue to raise its prices before churn starts to become an issue, because I do believe that there is a price where consumers will start canceling their memberships. per month, how many people do you think would cancel tomorrow? And that is obviously an exaggerated example, but I like to use exaggerations to make a point. And what I'm trying to say is there is a price point where people will stop paying and start canceling more. Now let's head over to Netflix's cash flow statement. And for this quarter, they generated $3.162 billion of operating cash flow. Last year for the same quarter, they generated $2.8 billion, so their operating cash flow is up by roughly 10%, which is good to see. Year-to-date, Netflix has generated about $10.2 billion of operating cash flow. However, this does include the large Warner Brothers breakup fee. So the operating cash flow being up $2 billion on a year-over-year basis is kind of being boosted by a one-time event. Moving on, we can see that the purchases of property, plant, and equipment, which is the capital expenditures, are very low, though. $678 million for the quarter and $694 million for the year. This means that Netflix's business is very free cash flow positive, and they are generating billions of dollars of free cash flow, even on a quarterly basis now. Moving down, we can see that they spent $4.8 billion on buying back shares in this one quarter alone, which is obviously more than they generated in free cash flow. So what Netflix did is they raised about a billion dollars of debt to continue ramping up their share buybacks. Now, I'm not someone who absolutely hates when a company uses debt to buy back stock if they believe that their shares are extremely cheap. But it is just worth noting that Netflix did raise about a billion dollars of debt to buy back shares this quarter. Year to date, Netflix has also bought back about $10.8 billion worth of shares, which is more than they generated in free cash flow, because their free cash flow so far year to date has been about $9.5 billion. So yeah, once again, you can see that they have raised about a billion dollars so far this year in debt to continue buying back their stock. Now, if we also head over to Stock Unlock and take a look at Netflix's total revenue and what analysts are expecting the revenue to be in the future, then turn on the percent growth rates, you can see that analysts are expecting Netflix's revenue growth rates to continue consistently decelerating all the way out to 2028, where they are expecting It seems like the market is expecting Netflix's revenue growth rates to continue decelerating, and I would actually agree with this. Now, moving on to Netflix. [10:00] valuation discussion, you will see stock platforms say that the PE is only about 20 right now. But again, Netflix has had a large one-time acquisition breakup fee payment that is boosting their earnings. On a normalized basis, Netflix is trading for about 22 times trailing 12 months earnings, factoring in the after hours share price decline, and about 20 times forward earnings. In my opinion, if Netflix can sustain 10% revenue growth and continue expanding margins to achieve 15% earnings growth over the longer term, then the stock does actually look interesting here. However, I do think its moat is weakening, and it sounds like management is somewhat agreeing by them saying that competition is remaining intense and getting even more intense. I also believe that the revenue growth could continue to decelerate to sub-10%, and margins can only go up so high. So eventually, Netflix's earnings growth will decelerate to be in line with revenue growth. On top of that, revenue growth seems to be fueled largely by price increases and advertising, and not so much by total member growth anymore. And as I said earlier, I am not sure when price increases start to impact the company's churn more. But I do believe that there is a limit to how much prices can go up before it becomes a real issue Margins and prices can only go up so high And then the remaining growth engine is advertising So Netflix advertising business really needs to work, and it probably will longer term. But today, Netflix's core business and growth drivers I am not as optimistic on, and I think they have limits they'll eventually reach. So in summary, Netflix's stock only looks interesting if you believe the moat will remain intact, and the earnings can continue to compound by 10-15% over the longer term. If not, then the price doesn't seem super compelling even today. And for myself, I am more skeptical than confident in this business, so I do not have enough conviction for it to interest me, even at today's prices in after-hours trading. And with all that being said, that is going to wrap up my Q3 earnings summary for Netflix.
