Detailed notes

## Background Published by the channel 浑水摸鱼清源 on Bilibili on October 26, 2026, this video features tastylive and Slope of Hope analyst Tim Knight dissecting where the bull market is fracturing across seven key ETF charts. According to the description, the program tracks multi-year trendline failures across emerging markets, domestic indices, and financials, concluding with an analysis of semiconductors as the market's pivotal breaking point.

## TL;DR Market technician Tim Knight examines seven major ETFs—EEM, EWZ, FXI, IWM, SPY, XLF, and SMH—demonstrating that critical multi-month and multi-year ascending trendlines have simultaneously broken down. International equities like emerging markets and Brazil show clear structural failures where former support has flipped into overhead resistance, while China remains constrained beneath a long-term descending triangle. Domestic benchmarks including small caps (IWM), the S&P 500 (SPY), and financials (XLF) have executed textbook rejections against the undersides of their broken trendlines, with SPY sinking back toward its early August lows. Most critically, Knight identifies the VanEck Semiconductor ETF (SMH) breaking below its steep post-ChatGPT ascending channel as the single most important and damaging technical development across the entire market.

## Atmosphere & style The presentation carries a calm, clinical, and cautionary tone as Tim Knight methodically inspects technical charts with the disciplined precision of a veteran chartist. Free of panic or sensationalist hyperbole, the pacing is measured and deliberate, letting repeated underside backtests and broken support baselines quietly illustrate widespread momentum loss. Watching the video feels like observing an analytical post-mortem of market leadership, building an escalating sense of technical gravity that culminates in the historic breakdown of the semiconductor sector.

## Detailed walkthrough ### [00:00](https://www.bilibili.com/video/BV1xNHL6rEjo?t=0s) International Markets: EEM Breakdown and EWZ Gap Resistance

Tim Knight opens the session by highlighting that the current week and month have delivered critical technical breakdowns across the broader market, which he illustrates through seven major ETF charts. Beginning with overseas equities, Knight first examines the iShares MSCI Emerging Markets ETF (EEM) on a long-term, 20-year chart. Historically, when EEM broke out of a similarly steep ascending channel, the rupture initiated a brutal bear market that dragged on for well over a year. Recently, a nearly identical technical structure emerged: a sharply ascending channel climbed significantly higher than the previous cycle before failing a couple of weeks ago. This breach marks the definitive end of an uninterrupted, two-year uptrend. While the breakdown occurred roughly eight to nine trading days prior rather than in the immediate session, Knight stresses that the failure is a major development. Although the chart has not carved out a classic textbook topping formation, Knight identifies a key price gap anchored to the recent Wednesday low, which now serves as a clear dividing line between heavy overhead supply and the failure zone beneath it.

Turning next to Brazil via the iShares MSCI Brazil ETF (EWZ), Knight describes it as an exceptionally instructive chart regarding how price behavior shifts once a trendline is violated. The underlying uptrend had remained intact since the Liberation Day bottom, eventually breaking higher and printing fresh lifetime highs only a couple of weeks prior. However, a massive price gap ignited by the election has brought the ETF slamming directly into former support, which has now inverted into staunch overhead resistance. Knight underscores that this pattern serves as a textbook example of the technical authority trendlines hold, predicting that the market will likely spend the coming days and weeks filling back down into that vast open gap.

```mermaid flowchart TD accTitle: EEM and EWZ Technical Breakdown Path accDescr: Sequence of events showing how multi-year trendlines failed and converted support into resistance for EEM and EWZ.
subgraph EWZ["EWZ (Brazil)"] W1["Lifetime Highs Reached"] --> W2["Massive Election Gap-Up"] W2 --> W3["Support Inverts into Resistance"] W3 --> W4["Expected Downward Gap Fill"] end ```
- EEM's breakdown ends a solid two-year ascending trendline, mirroring a breakdown from its 20-year history that preceded a bear market lasting over a year. - Tim Knight on the significance of the shift in EEM: “So this trendline failure is something that you're going to see in a lot of different places.” - EWZ reached lifetime highs just weeks prior before slamming into former support turned resistance. - Tim Knight on the technical dynamics in EWZ: “So this is a good example, even internationally, how the trend line has a lot of power.”
[01:54](https://www.bilibili.com/video/BV1xNHL6rEjo?t=114s) China (FXI) Triangle Setup and Small-Cap (IWM) Resistance Retests
Continuing across the globe, Knight pulls up the iShares China Large-Cap ETF (FXI), pointing out the extraordinary historical reality that the Chinese market peaked nearly two decades ago during its 2007 highs and currently trades far below those historic levels. While FXI experienced a vigorous rally beginning in late 2023, that move formed a distinct topping formation and decisively broke its trendline months ago. Since that rupture, price action has remained locked beneath a persistent descending trendline while carving out a fresh gap, completing a clean right-triangle technical formation. Knight notes that his long-term price objective for FXI remains pegged near 27, with the ETF grinding steadily toward that target.
Returning to domestic equities, Knight looks at the Russell 2000 small-cap benchmark via the iShares Russell 2000 ETF (IWM). The small-cap complex broke its primary uptrend, causing its upward-sloping support line to invert into rigorous resistance. Price subsequently tested that line repeatedly—in Knight's words, "almost to the penny"—before surging to record lifetime highs around mid-August. What followed was a prolonged, punishing slide downward. Zooming out, Knight identifies a well-defined topping pattern anchored by a textbook trendline failure: prices broke down, dropped for roughly a week, rallied back to kiss the exact underside of the broken trendline, and then rolled over hard. Knight maps out a dashed red horizontal line as the most crucial short-term resistance ceiling to watch on any attempted bounce.
- FXI trades substantially below its 2007 peak despite a late-2023 surge, remaining pinned below a descending trendline inside a right-triangle pattern. - Tim Knight on his outlook for Chinese equities: “So my long term target on FXI continues to be about 27.” - IWM carved out a lifetime high in mid-August before executing a clean failure, drop, and underside retest of its broken support line. - Tim Knight evaluating IWM's price action: “And as we zoom back again, you can see here a fairly decently formed top, but most importantly, the failed trend line.”
[04:01](https://www.bilibili.com/video/BV1xNHL6rEjo?t=241s) SPY Trendline Failure and XLF Distribution
Knight shifts his attention to the flagship US index ETF, the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (SPY). Unlike instruments measured from the Liberation Day trough, SPY's primary shorter-term trendline is anchored to the Iran war bottom. That critical diagonal recently gave way. Walking through the intraday and daily progression, Knight notes that the index first fractured the line, wrestled back above it in a choppy phase change, and then finally broke through with conviction. On the Wednesday preceding the recording, SPY staged a relief rally that tagged the underside of that broken trendline with pinpoint precision before violently retreating. Recording live on Friday while the market remained open, Knight observes that SPY had collapsed to some of its lowest prices in months, effectively retesting the turbulent levels established during the massive August 4 sell-off.
Next, Knight evaluates the Financial Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLF), which carries a much longer-term trendline extending all the way back to 2023. After bouncing along this multi-year baseline for an extended stretch, XLF finally broke down during the week. This breakdown is compounded by the formation of an unmistakable topping structure. Knight designates the high registered on Thursday as the defining resistance barrier, marking both the top of the local distribution pattern and the point of failure for the long-standing trendline.
```mermaid flowchart LR accTitle: SPY and XLF Support Inversion Process accDescr: Diagram illustrating the retest and rejection mechanics for SPY and XLF after trendlines failed.

subgraph XLF["XLF Breakdown Dynamics"] X1["Long-term Trendline from 2023"] --> X2["Multi-Month Bouncing"] X2 --> X3["Decisive Structural Breakdown"] X3 --> X4["Thursday High Caps Resistance"] end ```

- SPY trendline traces back to the Iran war bottom rather than the Liberation Day low. - Wednesday's SPY bounce achieved an exact backtest of the underside of the broken trendline before selling off to levels matching August 4. - XLF severed an uptrend that had persisted since 2023, leaving Thursday's high as overhead resistance. - Tim Knight reviewing the technical damage on the S&P 500: “Nothing definitive amongst all this, except for the fact that we have failed this particular trend line, which was a little bit shorter term.”

[05:43](https://www.bilibili.com/video/BV1xNHL6rEjo?t=343s) Semiconductors (SMH) Severing the AI Super-Channel

Knight saves the most critical chart for last: the VanEck Semiconductor ETF (SMH), which he deems the single most significant market event of the week. SMH had enjoyed a secular 18-year macro uptrend, which transformed into an exceptionally steep, parabolic advance following the public release of ChatGPT and the subsequent artificial intelligence boom. The immediate ascending channel governing that move originated at the Liberation Day lows, propelling the semiconductor complex into historic lifetime highs in June.

However, in the days leading up to the broadcast, semiconductor momentum cracked violently. SMH plunged through the lower boundary of that multi-year channel and settled cleanly below it, fundamentally altering its technical posture. Knight points to Wednesday's intraday low as the paramount overhead resistance mark going forward. He emphasizes that while the other six charts show serious structural fractures, the definitive failure of SMH's channel represents the overarching turning point for the broader market.

- SMH's broader uptrend spans 18 years, supercharged post-ChatGPT into a steep channel anchored to Liberation Day lows. - Semiconductors achieved lifetime highs in June before suffering a sharp, multi-day drop that breached the multi-year channel. - Wednesday's low is established as the primary overhead resistance benchmark. - Tim Knight delivering his core market thesis: “And I think that the failure of this channel is probably the most important event that has taken place this week.”

Tim Knight Walks Seven Charts That Just Broke Their Trend Lines

Reading summary

Original transcript

[0:00] Well, this has been a big week and a big month, and I wanted to emphasize by way of seven ETF charts the important failures we've seen in this bull market. And let's jump right in. We're going to start with a couple of overseas ones. And the first is EEM, the Emerging Markets. Now, this is a chart that goes back a good 20 years. channel and after it was broken, went to this long, long, well more than a year bear market. More recently, we've had a similar event. We had another sharply ascending channel, It went much higher than the last time. And recently, a couple of weeks back, it failed. It failed for the first time in a solid two-year uptrend. So this trendline failure is something that you're going to see in a lot of different places. And some happened very recently. Some, like in this instance, happened eight, nine trading days ago. But the fact that it's failed is a pretty big deal. We also have formed not exactly a topping pattern, but I would say that this price gap that is anchored to this Wednesday's low is an important delineation between all this overhead supply and the failure zone that we've dropped into. Next up is EWZ Brazil. And... I'm only focusing on this one because it's such an interesting chart, and it also illustrates an important change in relationship of the prices to the trend line. Because for Brazil, the uptrend had been intact since the Liberation Day bottom, and it actually broke a long time ago. and went higher. In fact, we were at lifetime highs just a couple of weeks back. But this tremendous gap was promulgated by an election, and we have mashed up against what is now resistance and what used to be support. So this is a good example, even internationally, how the trend line has a lot of power. And I suspect that in the days and weeks to come, some of that giant gap that we saw. Um, Let us have one more look internationally, then we'll get to the US. Here's China. And this actually, rather incredibly, reached its peak almost two decades ago. Let me just think of that. We are much, much lower now than we were in 2007. So China's stock market not doing well. But it did have a strong uptrend starting in late 23 and up and up and up, formed this topping pattern and broke its own uptrend months ago. And what's transpired since then has been, A, we have stayed persistently below this descending trend line. And B, we've got a new gap here, which constitutes this nice right triangle pattern. So my long term target on FXI continues to be about 27. And we are slowly and maybe surely working our way there. So now let's get closer to home. Small caps, IWM. It's quite interesting. We had this uptrend, it broke, and this red line changed from support to resistance, and it acted as resistance again and again and again, almost to the penny up here. and then we had a lifetime high back in around mid-august and since then we've had a relatively steady slide as you can see it's been quite hard on IWM, down, down, down. And as we zoom back again, you can see here a fairly decently formed top, but most importantly, the failed trend line. It actually behaved beautifully because it failed here, fell about a week, rallied. and then almost perfectly touch the underside of that before falling again. So in this point, resistance, and it's not super strong resistance, but I would say the most meaningful resistance short term is this dash red line that I've drawn. SPDR, of course, the biggest of the big, the oldest of the old ETFs. And here we have a shorter term term line. This was anchored to the Iran war bottom as opposed to Liberation Day. And that was broken quite recently. We'll zoom in tight here. We can see that we fractured it a bit here. push back above it. This is kind of a phase change. We're struggling with the trend line. Then finally, it broke it fully, rallied this most recent Wednesday, perfectly touching that broken trend line and then fell away from there. As I'm recording this, look [5:00] On Friday, the market's still open at this time, we're trading at the lowest levels we've seen. Really, some of those levels we've seen in the past few months. We're essentially trading now where we were trading back on this big August 4 day, like so. Nothing definitive amongst all this, except for the fact that we have failed this particular trend. trend line, which was a little bit shorter term. XLF, the financials. This one is a longer-term trend line. This goes all the way back to 2023. And it has been banging around this fella, but finally succumbed to the failure here. And what's interesting to me is this topping pattern that's taken place like so. I would say that the high we saw on Thursday constitutes a good level of resistance for this small topping pattern here and the failed trend line. The most important chart of all, and I think the biggest change this week, is semiconductors, SMH. broad uptrend for about 18 years and then reached an exceptionally sharp uptrend thanks to AI. After, um, The ChatGPD came out. But it's starting to falter. This channel was established at the Liberation Day lows. And it has been sailing higher. We were at lifetime highs back in June. But as of just recent days here, we fell sharply, finally cracked that multi-year ascending channel and are now cleanly below it. So very important resistance here has been established at Wednesday's low. And I think that the failure of this channel is probably the most important event that has taken place this week. And that is it. I hope this is helpful. And we'll keep monitoring these markets and banging up more videos as appropriate. So thanks for your attention.
