Detailed notes

## Background This video was published on Bilibili by the channel 浑水摸鱼清源 on November 1, 2026. While no official description was provided, the upload features an Unrivaled Investing analysis examining Reddit's 30% post-earnings stock crash and questioning the future viability of community platforms in the age of generative AI.

## TL;DR Following Reddit's third-quarter earnings report, the company's stock plummeted roughly 30% despite posting headline revenue growth of 53% and expanding free cash flow. The underlying catalyst is structural disintermediation from Google AI Mode, which synthesizes answers directly on search engine results pages and drives a contraction in Reddit's domestic U.S. user base. Evaluating the business against his Unrivaled Investing framework, the host classifies Reddit as an uncertain 'shmayby,' highlighting management risks such as CEO Steve Huffman's aggressive insider selling and sub-3% equity stake. While Reddit's $3 billion net cash balance sheet and highly monetized logged-in super users offer downside protection, long-term returns face severe headwinds from search traffic erosion and advertising cyclicality.

## Atmosphere & style The presentation carries a sober, disciplined, and deeply analytical tone, resembling a candid private investment committee audit rather than reactive financial commentary. The host methodically deconstructs Wall Street's surface-level optimism, contrasting Reddit's sparkling headline growth against the quiet erosion of its domestic referral funnel. The emotional arc moves from measured curiosity to hardened skepticism, particularly when calling out CEO equity misalignment and rejecting hyper-bullish AI forecasts in favor of conservative, risk-adjusted realism.

## Detailed walkthrough ### [00:00](https://www.bilibili.com/video/BV1yVxy6aEJ3?t=0s) Q3 Earnings Overview, Valuation Shift, and Headline Metrics

Following Reddit's third-quarter earnings report, the stock experienced a severe sell-off, dropping roughly 30% in what can only be described as a bloodbath. Setting the context, the host notes that he previously covered Reddit back in March when the stock was trading around $125 per share. At the time, he flagged the valuation as unattractive and the underlying business dynamics—particularly within the emerging AI ecosystem—as being in the "too hard" pile. While the post-earnings plunge makes the multiple look far more palatable, the broader macro and technological environment in which Reddit operates has deteriorated significantly. As the host states: “When I run it through my own Unrivaled Investing checklist, I would say it probably doesn't pass that checklist, but we'll go through each of those pieces towards the end of this video.”

On paper, Reddit's top-line headline figures for the third quarter appeared remarkably strong, reflecting management's ability to drive top-line expansion while maintaining cost discipline: - **Revenue growth:** 53% year-over-year overall revenue growth. - **Advertising growth:** Advertising revenue specifically surged by 54%. - **Daily Active Users (DAUs):** Global daily active users climbed 12% to 130 million. - **Average Revenue per User (ARPU):** Revenue per user expanded by 36%. - **Profitability:** Both adjusted EBITDA and free cash flow showed substantial improvement, demonstrating operating leverage and disciplined expense management alongside top-line growth.

[02:40](https://www.bilibili.com/video/BV1yVxy6aEJ3?t=160s) The Google AI Disruption and Deteriorating US User Growth

Despite the impressive top-line growth, a closer look at user composition reveals alarming structural headwinds. While total global DAUs rose 12%, that growth was heavily buoyed by international markets expanding at roughly 24%. In contrast, Daily Active Users in the United States—Reddit's most lucrative cohort in terms of ad spend per user—actually declined 2% year-over-year. Management acknowledged that Google continues to crawl Reddit data as aggressively as ever, meaning external demand for Reddit's forum content remains high, but how that content reaches end users has broken down. Google's rollout of "AI Mode" generates synthesized answers directly on the search engine results page rather than routing web traffic out to destination sites.

The mechanism behind this shift strikes at the heart of Reddit's acquisition funnel. Historically, someone typing a product query like "what are the best running shoes I should buy?" would click through to a Reddit discussion thread, generating ad impressions and giving Reddit an opportunity to convert an anonymous visitor into a registered user. Today, conversational assistants like Google Gemini, OpenAI's ChatGPT, and Anthropic's Claude answer the question directly using scraped community insights, cutting out the click entirely. As Reddit's leadership conceded regarding the AI search overhaul: “The reality is the AI mode does not drive traffic, and Google is increasingly using AI mode to respond to user search inquiries.”

[05:00](https://www.bilibili.com/video/BV1yVxy6aEJ3?t=300s) Decelerating Guidance, Core Super Users, and Long-Term AI Risks

The fallout from AI-driven search disruption is directly impacting forward guidance. Management warned that if current traffic trends persist, the fourth quarter could see a double-digit decline in daily active users—a contraction that could easily accelerate into the following year. Revenue growth is projected to decelerate sharply from 53% in Q3 down to approximately 40% in Q4, with guidance targeting around $1 billion, coming in well below analyst consensus. This abrupt slowdown leaves investors questioning what the business will look like in 2027 and 2028 as consumer habits permanently shift toward AI-mediated answers for shopping, reviews, and general queries.

Nevertheless, the core platform retains significant defensive strengths that prevent the situation from being an outright catastrophe: - **Monetization concentrated in logged-in users:** Over 80% of Reddit's revenue is generated by logged-in and mobile app users rather than anonymous web-search visitors. - **Resilient core engagement:** While aggregate US traffic dipped, the core cohort of logged-in US "super users" actually posted slight sequential growth. - **Pricing power and ad under-monetization:** Advertising pricing growth outpaced impression growth, showing that management can extract more revenue per existing user because Reddit has historically been under-monetized relative to its peers.

Even so, the long-term risk remains substantial as AI models become hyper-personalized. If an assistant already knows an individual's specific tastes, needs, and criteria, the necessity of combing through crowdsourced community threads diminishes. In closing this portion of the analysis, the host highlights the broader tech landscape—noting other bargains such as founder-led ad-tech firms trading at compelling multiples—before preparing to evaluate whether Reddit can satisfy his disciplined "Unrivaled Investing checklist" for finding potential multi-baggers.

[10:00](https://www.bilibili.com/video/BV1yVxy6aEJ3?t=600s) Steve Huffman’s Insider Selling and the "Shmayby" Verdict

Evaluating Reddit against the proprietary Unrivaled Investing checklist reveals significant hesitations, landing the company in the uncertain territory of a "shmayby"—a concept borrowed from a beloved book series representing an ambiguous middle ground between a solid maybe and a hard pass. While founder-led companies are typically an attractive hallmark of an investment thesis, Reddit co-founder and CEO Steve Huffman presents a much more complicated track record. Huffman has engaged in aggressive insider selling amounting to tens of millions of dollars, and he currently holds less than 3% of the company's equity. Rather than retaining substantial founder equity, Huffman cashed out his original ownership when Reddit was sold to Condé Nast in its early days, only returning to the chief executive seat years later around 2015, forcing him to re-accumulate his stake through executive stock compensation packages.

This equity journey contrasts sharply with traditional founder-led enterprises where an owner-operator maintains a 15% to 20% holding from day one and approaches the business with an enduring commitment. Taking a modest profit of a few million dollars off the table during an arduous startup journey is understandable, but completely dumping all chips early on reveals a fundamentally different tier of conviction.

> “The, hey, I completely cashed out my chips in this company, that's a different level of belief, and I want the believers at the end of the day; I want someone that says, hey, this is my life mission.”

- **CEO Ownership Profile:** Steve Huffman owns less than 3% of Reddit after having sold off his original founder equity during the Condé Nast acquisition, re-earning his current position via stock compensation. - **Insider Activity:** Tens of millions of dollars in recent insider sales undermine confidence in management's alignment with long-term shareholders. - **Leadership Mentality:** Huffman's historical ambivalence toward staying permanently partnered with the company contrasts with the "ride or die" founder mentality investors prefer.

[11:15](https://www.bilibili.com/video/BV1yVxy6aEJ3?t=675s) Shrinking US User Base, Traffic Disintermediation, and AI Skepticism

The pillar of "obvious growth" on Reddit’s checklist faces severe headwinds due to structural deterioration in domestic user metrics. While U.S. logged-in daily active users grew marginally by just over 1% year-over-year, total U.S. daily active users actually experienced an outright decline. Management has managed strong headline revenue by ramping up monetization and squeezing more ad revenue from existing active members, but that strategy has an inherent ceiling. Jacking up ad pricing while the underlying consumer foundation contracts is fundamentally unsustainable.

```mermaid flowchart TD accTitle: Reddit User Funnel and AI Threat accDescr: Diagram illustrating how search habits and AI chatbots risk disintermediating Reddit's organic traffic from Google.
The underlying threat is Reddit's reliance on Google search referrals at a moment when search habits are being upended. With Google integrating Gemini and AI Overviews, generative engines summarize forum discussions directly on the search page, depriving Reddit of organic click-through traffic. This leaves Reddit with steep uncertainties: it is unclear whether AI will redirect users back to native threads or if Reddit will be forced to incur immense user-acquisition marketing costs to lure them back. Management has already signaled that fourth-quarter daily active users could contract by a low double-digit percentage if prevailing patterns continue. Although the host's AI assistant, Flash, generated an exuberant model forecasting up to 35% revenue growth over five years and potential returns north of 800%, the host dismissed those inputs as far too detached from operational reality.
> “With the ad monetization, you can't just keep jacking up higher prices and, you know, expect your revenue growth to do well if the underlying user base is shrinking.”
- **Domestic Audience Dynamics:** Total U.S. daily active users declined, offset solely by power-user (logged-in) daily active users edging up by just over 1% year-over-year. - **Management Warning:** Reddit warned that fourth-quarter daily active users could drop by a low double-digit percentage if adverse referral trends persist. - **AI Tool Divergence:** The Flash AI model project between 12% (base case) and 35% (bull case) five-year compound revenue growth, projecting over an 800% upside that appears unrealistically aggressive.
[14:40](https://www.bilibili.com/video/BV1yVxy6aEJ3?t=880s) Valuation Multiples, Advertising Cyclicality, and the Broader AI Paradigm
Reddit’s valuation has moderated considerably following its drop from previous highs near $125 per share down to an $18 billion market capitalization. The balance sheet provides substantial downside protection with roughly $3 billion in cash and zero debt, establishing the type of "fortress balance sheet" that can sustain a platform through structural pivots. However, many investors remain oblivious to the inherent macro sensitivity of Reddit's core revenue engine. Decades of steady top-line expansion from Google have conditioned Wall Street to believe digital advertising is a perpetual "up and to the right" market, ignoring how viciously marketing spend contracts in an authentic economic downturn.
> “Folks need to wake up that advertising can be cyclical... and if we get a sharp recession, it won't be how it works is my expectation, and I think a lot of folks are going to get caught with their pants down in that scenario.”
At roughly 20 times free cash flow, the stock offers an initial 4% to 5% cash yield. Even with fourth-quarter expansion decelerating to around 40%, full-year revenue growth is still guided above 50%. The long-term investment decision ultimately hinges on whether Reddit can sustain a hurdle of 10% to 15% annual growth over the next five years. Under a conservative low-case framework assuming 10% revenue growth and multiple compression down to 12 times free cash flow, the sheer volume of organic cash accumulating on the balance sheet still yields a positive total return.
| Metric / Scenario | Bull Case / Flash AI Projection | Conservative / Host Low-Case Framework | |:--- |:--- |:--- | | **5-Year Revenue CAGR** | ~35% | ~10% to 15% | | **Terminal Valuation Multiple** | Elevated growth multiple | 12x Free Cash Flow (compression due to cyclicality) | | **Balance Sheet Context** | Continued hyper-scaling | ~$3 Billion cash cushion + steady cumulative cash accumulation | | **Implied Stock Return** | "Hundreds of percent upside" (800%+) | Moderately positive total return buoyed by 4-5% FCF yield |
This macro reassessment extends far beyond Reddit. In an era where generative AI can route consumers straight to manufacturers and primary suppliers, high-margin retail advertising models—such as Amazon’s lucrative ad marketplace—could face similar disintermediation challenges as consumer behavior rewires across the internet.
- **Valuation Anchors:** An $18 billion market capitalization set against an approximate $3 billion net cash balance yields an entry multiple of roughly 20x free cash flow. - **Near-Term Guidance:** Despite severe sequential deceleration down to 40% growth in the fourth quarter, annual guidance still anticipates full-year top-line expansion exceeding 50%. - **Five-Year Hurdle Rate:** A sustainable compound growth trajectory of 10% to 15% remains the absolute prerequisite for long-term investors to offset potential advertising multiple compression down to 12x.
Reading summary
根据浑水摸鱼清源引述的Unrivaled Investing分析,Reddit在第三季度财报后股价暴跌约30%,主因在于Google部署AI搜索直接生成答案,绕过了社区原有的引流机制,导致最具变现价值的美国用户量见顶萎缩,令其长期增长承压。 亮眼业绩掩盖核心美国用户收缩 (0:00) Reddit在第三季度表面数据强劲,总营收同比增长53%,广告营收激增54%,全球日活用户(DAU)增长12%达到1.3亿,单用户平均收入(ARPU)提升36%,且调整后EBITDA与自由现金流显著改善。然而,这一增长主要由国际市场(增长约24%)驱动。 在广告价值最高的美国市场,总日活用户同比下滑了2%。尽管美国本土已登录的“超级用户”微幅增长逾1%,但整体国内用户基数缩减暴露了底层隐忧。节目指出,管理层依靠提高广告单价和对存量用户深度变现拉动营收的方式存在天花板,在用户基数缩减的背景下难以长期维持。 Google AI分流破坏获客闭环 (2:40) Reddit以往极度依赖搜索引擎的自然引流。当用户搜索“最好的跑鞋”等产品问题时,通常会点击进入Reddit讨论帖,从而创造广告展示并带来新用户转化。管理层坦言,虽然Google仍在积极抓取其论坛数据,但Google推出的“AI模式”以及ChatGPT、Claude等工具会直接在搜索结果页生成整合答案。 这种机制从根本上切断了点击流。管理层已确认AI模式无法带来跳转流量,并警告若当前趋势持续,第四季度日活用户可能出现低双位数的同比下滑。这一冲击直接拖累了预期,第四季度营收增长指引大幅放缓至约40%(约10亿美元),远低于市场共识。 高管减持与创始人持股偏低 (10:00) 在Unrivaled Investing的选股清单评估中,Reddit被归类为介于观望与放弃之间的模糊地带(shmayby)。创始人兼CEO Steve Huffman早年将公司出售给康泰纳仕(Condé Nast)时已将原始股份全额套现,2015年前后重返公司后才通过高管股权激励重新积累股份,目前持股不足3%。 此外,Huffman近期进行了数千万美元的内部减持。节目认为,这种缺乏长期“同生共死”承诺的资本运作轨迹与持股水平,显著弱化了管理层与普通股东之间的利益绑定,无法满足优质创始人主导企业的投资标准。 估值消化与广告周期性风险 (14:40) 暴跌后Reddit市值回落至约180亿美元,账面坐拥约30亿美元净现金且无债务,提供了坚实的下行缓冲。按自由现金流约20倍估值计算,其初始现金收益率达4%至5%。分析认为AI辅助工具Flash预测的五年35%复合增长及逾800%回报脱离现实,更合理的基准是未来五年维持10%至15%的年化复合增长率。 同时,市场往往忽视数字广告的宏观周期性。若未来遭遇经济深度衰退,广告支出可能剧烈收缩,估值倍数或下探至12倍自由现金流。在更广阔的AI时代,直接连接消费者与生产者的生成式工具还可能对类似亚马逊高利润零售广告在内的商业模式构成全行业性冲击。 Reddit拥有高比例登录用户和充足的现金储备,在短期内具备抗风险能力;但随着生成式AI改变搜索习惯,公司能否在不依赖昂贵获客成本的前提下守住核心社区价值并实现10%至15%的长线增长,仍是未解的关键疑问。
精炼阅读摘要
主讲人指出,Reddit在发布第三季度财报后股价单日重挫约30%,市值缩水至约180亿美元;尽管当期营收增长与现金流表现亮眼,但Google等生成式AI搜索直接提炼社区答案,正在阻断外部搜索向Reddit导入流量,导致高变现价值的美国用户规模出现萎缩并引发远期增长担忧。 亮眼财报背后的美国核心用户收缩 (0:00) 从表面财务指标来看,Reddit第三季度呈现出强劲的扩张态势与良好的费用控制能力。全季度总营收同比增长53%,其中广告业务收入激增54%,全球日活跃用户数(DAU)增长12%达到1.3亿,单用户平均收入(ARPU)提升36%,且调整后EBITDA与自由现金流均实现大幅改善。 然而,用户结构拆解暴露了严重的区域分化。全球DAU的增长主要由国际市场约24%的高速扩张拉动,而在单客广告价值最高的美国本土市场,DAU同比反而出现2%的萎缩。虽然管理层依托广告单价上涨和现有活跃用户变现力度的增强维持了收入高增,但在用户基底收缩的前提下持续拉高变现强度的模式很难长期维系。 谷歌AI搜索对导流转化漏斗的颠覆 (2:40) Reddit增长乏力的根源在于搜索引擎生态的结构性突变。以往用户通过Google检索消费建议或专业问题(例如搜索“最佳跑鞋”)时,系统会展示Reddit讨论帖链接,为平台带来广告曝光并将匿名访问者转化为注册用户。如今,Google推出的“AI模式”以及ChatGPT、Claude等对话助手直接抓取并提炼Reddit社区内容,在搜索页面直接给出总结性答案,彻底跳过了点击进入目标网站的步骤。 Reddit管理层在沟通中承认,尽管外部对社区数据的抓取依旧频繁,但AI模式本身并不为第三方带来回流点击。随着该导流漏斗断裂,管理层预警若当前流量趋势持续,第四季度DAU可能出现低双位数百分比的收缩,当季营收增速预计将从53%骤降至约40%(指引约为10亿美元),显著低于分析师此前预期。 创始人低持股与减持动向削弱治理信心 (10:00) 在主讲人的投资清单评估中,Reddit被归为介于“可能”与“放弃”之间的模糊地带(Shmayby),关键原因在于治理结构与管理层利益协同度不足。在优质成长企业中,投资者往往青睐持有15%至20%股权且与公司命运绑定的创始人团队,但Reddit联合创始人兼首席执行官Steve Huffman目前的持股比例不足3%。 主讲人回顾指出,Huffman在早年将Reddit出售给康泰纳仕(Condé Nast)时便已将持股全部套现离场,直到2015年前后重返CEO岗位后才通过高管股权激励重新积累股份。结合近期Huffman涉及数千万美元的内部股票减持行为,主讲人认为其经营心态更偏向职业经理人,缺乏将企业视为终身使命的持久信念,削弱了长期投资者的信心。 估值安全垫与广告周期性下的回报测算 (14:40) 经历深度回调后,Reddit相较于125美元的历史高点已有显著折价,当前约180亿美元市值对应约20倍自由现金流倍数,初始现金收益率在4%至5%左右。此外,公司账面拥有约30亿美元净现金且无负债,加之超过80%的收入由高粘性的登录用户及移动端贡献,为平台抵御冲击提供了坚实的资产负债表与基础业务护城河。 但主讲人强调,市场往往低估了数字广告业务的宏观周期性,一旦遭遇经济衰退,广告支出缩水可能导致现金流倍数压缩至12倍左右。主讲人否定了AI分析工具Flash所给出的35%复合年增长率及超800%回报的极度乐观预测,指出在保守假设下,只要Reddit未来五年能维持10%至15%的营收复合增速,结合净现金积累即可提供稳健正回报,但其前提是业务必须抵御住AI的分流侵蚀。 Reddit凭借充沛现金与登录核心用户的粘性具备一定下行防线,但AI直接摘要正在瓦解其赖以获取新客的搜索入口。面对本土用户缩减、广告业务周期性波动以及管理层持股偏低的治理软肋,平台能否在AI时代维持两位数的持续复合增长仍存重大变数。
We're going to cover all that and more in this video. If you enjoy educational investing content, I appreciate you hitting that thumbs up, hit that subscribe button. You're watching Unrivaled Investing. So first in full context. Disclosure, I previously did a video on Reddit back in March of this year at around $125 per share, calling out the valuation and the changes in the underlying business dynamics, particularly the ecosystem with AI, calling it out as too hard at around $125 per share, saying the valuation just increases. wasn't quite there. And if you don't want to watch this whole video, my conclusion now is that the valuations obviously much better now. However, the macro concerns in which it operates in have gotten significantly worse. So the assumptions required to get an adequate or a satisfactory return are much more amenable, so much more attractive from my own perspective. When I run it through my own Unrivaled Investing checklist, I would say it probably doesn't pass that checklist, but we'll go through each of those pieces towards the end of this video. So let's keep going through their results because if you look at the third quarter results, I think you would actually be quite impressed because looking at the numbers, you're seeing a company that posted 53% revenue growth, advertising revenue, 54%, looking at daily active users up 12% to 130 million, looking at revenue per user of 36%, adjusted EBITDA, posting just incredible results of this. This reflects that management. is able to manage both their costs and their revenue. And they're posting fantastic revenue growth, you know, that 50% plus. And then EBITDA and free cash flow, much better. So that means they're saying, hey, revenue's going well. up a lot and they're managing their expenses at the same time and i'd like to see that successful discipline from management. So you might look at this and go, wait a second, why is the stock down 30% off of these fantastic results? And there were some problematic user trends. If you look at US daily active users, it actually declined 2% year over year. And keep in mind, United States users generally are worth more from a perspective of ad dollar spend in terms of global users growing 12% because international is growing at such a fast clip around 24%. So this is causing investors to go, wait a second, you might be losing such a core market as the US. I mean, what's going on here? Management calls out that, look, there's a lot of trends. There's a lot of changes with AI. They talk about how Google is crawling us as hard as ever. So the demand hasn't changed from their point of view. But the reality is, this is straight from saying the reality is the AI mode does not drive traffic, and Google is increasingly using AI mode to respond to user search inquiries. And so he's saying not for us and not to anybody as far as I know. So this AI mode is disrupting the end users like or the end platforms, the end sites like Reddit. He talks about how this is a fundamental shift in how Google works. It used to be a traffic driver. Now it's not. So, Reddit is a potential AI loser, and I think that's what the results are showing. And a perfect example is a traditional search might have been, what are the best running shoes I should buy? And then you might see a link to a Reddit discussion. You click on that. Now, using Gemini or for the increasing users using Chachapiti or Claude, they might say, you know what? The AI can just answer this for me. I have an assistant doing this. then you have fewer people ultimately need to click Reddit. And so Reddit losing potential traffic, advertising impressions and opportunities to convert visitors into regular users. And this translates into a worsening outlook where management companies [5:00] The fourth quarter could see a double-digit decline in daily active users if this trend persists. And I suspect it could even accelerate into next year. And so what they're seeing is a significant deceleration in terms of their revenue growth, seeing 53% growth in the third quarter going to 40% in the fourth quarter. They're guiding to around a billion dollars in revenue. That's well below analysts' expectations. But, you know, it's still in the same zone of around a billion dollars. But this trend of deceleration is causing investors to wonder what happens in 2027, what happens in 2028, because AI isn't going anywhere. People are going to increasingly use it to ask questions about, hey, where can I get this? Where can I shop? What are the best deals I should consider? And, you know, That's disrupting a traditional advertising model. Now, it's not all bad. There are some bullish engagement data points and bullish aspects to the core business, which is to recognize that over 80% of their monetization comes from logged in and app users. That generates over 80% of their revenue. These are valuable audience. And I'd argue this is still growing. So despite the fact that on... On average, when you're looking at U.S., U.S. declined, if you look at the actual folks that are logged in, it actually sequentially grew slightly. So that is a very important data point, which is the most valued Reddit users, the super users, still grew by a bit. Another key aspect is that management is saying, wait a second – We still believe. Let's ignore daily active users for a bit. The second key point around higher ad performance, we still think we're under monetizing. And so management reported that their advertising pricing growth exceeded impression growth. So they're able to still squeeze that orange. Say there's a lot more juice out of this orange because we're underpriced relative to what we could be. So Reddit is generating substantially more revenue from its existing audience. That's another key aspect. Another third dynamic that's worth understanding, especially when you're combining it with this mentality of the super users being worth a lot, is even if you lose, let's say, 10% of your daily active users, which... You're trending the early signs that AI could have that sort of impact. That doesn't actually necessarily mean you lose 10% of your revenue. Let's say it's offset by the super users. You might lose some of the traffic of folks that are like, yeah, I just wanted to ask this question. Whereas there are some folks that say, hey, I want to be part of this community of what are the best shoes. And I want to see the thread that other people have said versus having an AI just find what might be the best answer for me. I personally suspect the risk of AI, however, is only growing, especially as you consider that AI will increasingly know your preferences. And so then when it becomes the like, well, I know what Daniel likes. Daniel has this checklist of companies. Then it's, you know, it changes the, hmm, maybe I need to talk to a bunch of other people when AI can do such a good job in terms of answering certain core questions that's fit for the individual. on a significant haircut. First of all, please recognize none of this is financial advice. Also, quick plug, if you're looking for help on your investing journey, consider joining me at Unrivaled Investing. So there are bargains if you're looking for them, but it just depends on your own investing journey. But let's stick with Reddit and... Also, another key point is I have a free course on how to find potential – stocks that can you know, become a multi-bagger in time. I say 4X in four years. And I walked through that case study in that free video. I walked through my investing checklist. And so let's run Reddit through the unrivaled investing checklist, because frankly, when I think about most companies, they fail. And I think when I look at Reddit, I don't think, I think it gets a solid stealing the gold-plated [10:00] shmayby line from i i encourage you to look it up if you don't it's a great book series and so looking at this in terms of solid maybe shmayby you know, unrivaled investing checklist and whether or not, it passes for Reddit. You know, you see Stephen Huffman, and he's the co-founder, CEO of, Normally, I'd love to see founders running business. But in this case, I'm also seeing a lot of insider selling to the tunes of tens of millions of dollars. And it's also a mixed history here because he owns less than 3% of the company and he sold his founder stake before the IPO. And he's having to re-earn his ownership through compensation. So it's not exactly like the founder that owns, let's say, 20% of a company that's owned it since the beginning. It's like, look, I'm building this. Like, this is a guy that's waffled on the, like, hmm, you know, should I be partnered with this? And I think he sold his stake when the company was sold to Condé Nast years ago. And then he got brought back on around 2015. So I just don't care for that. you know, ride or die sort of mentality. And I can understand the, hey, I'm looking to take, you know, a couple million dollars off the table along the way. You know, that journey, I certainly respect. The, hey, I completely cashed out my chips in this company. That's a different level of belief. And I want the believers at the end of the day. I want someone that says, hey, this is my life mission. And it's sort of, it seems like he's waffled a bit. That's just one data point. So that's part of the shmaby. In terms of the obvious growth... Yeah, that's a little tricky. So US user growth is concerning. So U.S. logged in daily users grew over 1%. year over year, while the total U.S. daily users actually declined. So the power users growing, actual users, total users declining, not loving it. There are dynamics that monetization, you know, can do well as they continue to squeeze that orange, but you can't do it forever because eventually, you know, if the user base is declining, eventually that catches up. With the ad monetization, you can't just keep jacking up higher prices and, you know, expect your revenue growth to do well if the underlying user base is shrinking. And then we fundamentally don't know what the user acquisition is. I mean, this is losing Google, and I'd argue they're increasingly going to be losing Google, and the changing consumer habit is going to accelerate in the next decade. quarters and years. And we don't know what that post, you know, AI... future looks like in terms of Will AI, will Gemini, will Google redirect folks back to the communities at Reddit? Not sure. And how much will Reddit have to spend to get people to come back to these communities? Not sure. because that that's a huge uncertainty and the fact is that they're saying yeah the fourth quarter daily active users could actually decline by low double digit percentage if these trends persists i suspect they're going to get a lot worse so that makes the obvious growth part i put this it's just too hard for me personally now you know smart smart Smart investors, smart folks can disagree. When I turn to Flash, my free-to-use AI assistant, it actually likes the setup a lot. It thinks the framework could suggest hundreds of percent upside. Maybe AI is getting a little too excited here. So Flash thinks the low case is around 12% revenue growth over the next five years. Frankly, I'm not sure I agree. The high case is 35%. That's why you're getting that like 800% plus. Once again, I think that's too aggressive, active users. So this would suggest, you know, this is a temporary process And they're able to re-figure out, you know, how to start onboarding, you know, more and more active users. I think there's a lot changing in their business model that gives me pause. This, this is no longer the obvious growth story, in my opinion. So, you know, this is my personal experience. hypothetical valuation framework for Reddit. Of course, stock prices can go higher or lower, but when I'm looking at this, First of all, $18 billion market cap, $3 billion roughly in cash on the balance sheet. Those are favorable data points. I love... Lots of cash on the balance sheet. I love Fortress balance sheet, so I applaud that dynamic. I also recognize it's an advertising business. Folks need to wake up that advertising can be cyclical. I know. [15:00] of folks have looked at how Google has done for decades and think like advertising up and to the right. That is not necessarily how it always works. And if we get a sharp recession, it won't be how it works is my expectation. And I think a lot of folks are going to get caught with their pants down in that scenario. So that is something to think about. Just worth putting that out there. Maybe I'm wrong. I hope I'm wrong. about that. So I think looking at this with Reddit now, Clearly, the valuation is much better than what I was talking about at 125. I think now if you're a Reddit bull... It's much easier to get around the story because now, you know, keep in mind, still they're expecting around 50% growth for the full year. Yes, it decelerated a lot to 40% in the fourth quarter, but still for the full year, over 50% is what they're expecting. So then the question is, over the next five years, what do you think they're going to do? If you think that they're able to deliver 15% growth and keep roughly their margins, then I'd argue it's a pretty good bet. Because at the current price of around 20 times... free cash flow. You know, you're getting a four or 5% yield plus that growth. So really, I think the Reddit bulls are saying, and this is for you to think about, is how confident. are you that Reddit can keep growing at, let's say, 10%, 15% plus in the years ahead. And I think that is really that threshold because my low case here assumes 10% and assumes continued margin, continued multiple contraction. We've seen multiple come in a lot. If you see five years from now, folks are saying, yeah, this isn't growing super fast, and let's give it a 12 times multiple because, let's say, advertising cyclical. too harsh, in that case, you're still ending up with a positive scenario because of how much cash can accrue on the balance sheet. So that's why it's so important for you to think about how confident are you that... Reddit will be able to meet that 10 to 15% hurdle over the next five years. I'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments below on whether or not you think Reddit can do it given these changes with AI impacting their business. I think there are other plays out there where the growth trends are more obvious, but look, everything is coming in under a new, it's a. We are in a new paradigm with AI, and I think everything will be impacted. So you have to sort of triple check your assumptions and check it one quarter at a time. Like, I'd also love your feedback on this. E-commerce marketplaces... Advertising is a big part of their profitability. It's one of their most lucrative business lines. for these, let's say, global e-commerce platforms? And you can talk about Amazon, how their advertising business has grown significantly. Will that be impacted by AI as well? Where folks are going to say, wait a second, you know, I could just ask AI. AI will take me straight to the supplier. Do I still need that marketplace? I'd love to hear your thoughts below. Thanks so much for watching. Unrivaled Investing.
