Detailed notes

## Background Written and performed by Dan Olson, "In Search Of A Flat Earth" was published on the YouTube channel Folding Ideas on September 11, 2020. In the video description, Olson notes that the project involved a grueling 19-kilometer hike to Lake Minnewanka to film field tests, framing the piece around an unexpected mid-video turn with the note, "The Twist at 37 Minutes Will Make You Believe We Live In Hell."

## TL;DR The video opens as an empirical debunking of Flat Earth claims, using an unbroken jib shot across Lake Minnewanka to visually demonstrate the curvature of the Earth and occluded shorelines. However, Olson shifts his focus from geometric refutations to the underlying psychology of the belief system, revealing that Flat Earth functions not as misguided science, but as a reactionary, apocalyptic syncretic religion immune to factual counter-evidence. At the 37-minute mark, the essay pivots to examine how the algorithmic decline of Flat Earth directly fed into the rise of QAnon, a fascist cult centered on Donald Trump, deep-state cabals, and doomsday purges. Ultimately, Olson argues that both movements reflect a broader reactionary crisis where believers engage in magical thinking, discarding reality to impose an authoritarian order where their opponents are silenced.

## Atmosphere & style The video begins with the crisp, methodical calm of a scientific inquiry and a hands-on field experiment, framed by misty, expansive lake vistas and careful geometric diagrams. As the analysis pivots from terrain optics to radicalization pipelines, the mood descends into an exhausting, somber dread underscored by ambient synthesizer drones and escalating archival footage of real-world violence. Olson's delivery is weary, incisive, and deeply unsettled, turning what started as an intellectual puzzle-solving exercise into a chilling post-mortem on the weaponization of belief against consensus reality.

## Detailed walkthrough ### [00:00](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JTfhYyTuT44&t=0s) The Setting: Lake Minnewanka and an Unfinished Project

Just outside Banff, Alberta lies Lake Minnewanka, a serpentine natural body of water whose outlet has been altered by three separate damming projects: an initial timber flood-control dam built in 1895, a hydroelectric replacement in 1912, and a final dam and causeway completed in 1941. Together, these interventions raised the lake’s water level by more than 25 meters, submerging the historic shoreline, an early settler settlement, and dozens of ancient Stoney Nakoda sites. While those flooded ruins are marked with buoys and frequented by cold-water scuba divers, the lake's long geometry also makes it an ideal real-world laboratory for measuring the curvature of the Earth.

Dan Olson explains how he found himself drawn to this spot. Around five or six years earlier, he became fascinated by Flat Earth subcultures as an amused observer rather than a believer, spending his time browsing their memes, infographics, and documentaries, and playfully mocking them on Twitter. He was on the verge of producing a video on the topic when fellow YouTuber Hbomberguy released his own comprehensive breakdown of Flat Earth. Bound by the tongue-in-cheek rule of "reviewer dibs"—humorously framed as Section 7.2.1 of the YouTube Community Standards, the “Para-Temporal Exclusion Clause”—Dan had to shelve the concept for well over a year.

His inspiration had originated with a specific 2017 upload titled *Flat Earth proof 1: the level*. The video itself was an undistinguished 90-minute compilation spliced from an even smaller channel, cycling through standard conspiratorial misunderstandings of gravity, basic mathematics, and mountain scales. However, it had one unique hook: the creator had carried out original field research directly on the shoreline of Lake Minnewanka. Because the lake sits merely 90 minutes away from Dan’s home, the conspiracy had arrived on his doorstep.

- **1895:** First timber dam built for flood control at Lake Minnewanka. - **1912:** Dam replaced with a hydroelectric facility. - **1941:** Current dam and causeway completed, totaling over 25 meters of surface rise. - Submerged sites include ancient Stoney Nakoda indigenous worksites and a historic settler town.

[05:01](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JTfhYyTuT44&t=301s) The Geometry of the Lake and First Field Test

Revisiting the original clip, the Flat Earth proponent crouches less than a foot over the waterline, zooms his camera across the water toward the far shore, and declares that because the opposite coast resolves into focus, the lake exhibits no curvature and is fundamentally flat. In reality, Lake Minnewanka is an exceptional proving ground because its elongated shape permits multi-kilometer, unobstructed sightlines across an alpine lake without the oceanic swell that distorts open-sea trials. Wind generates light chop, but there are no meaningful tides.

Looking northeast across the water from the southwest dam bank toward an identifiable rockslide where Aylmer Canyon meets the lake gives a line of sight of seven kilometers (approximately 4.3 miles). Over that distance, standard geometry dictates that the Earth curves away roughly 3.5 meters (11 feet). Running those parameters through an Earth curvature calculator shows that lowering one's eye line from an average standing human height down to the water’s surface changes the hidden target height on the opposite bank from just 0.4 meters up to 3.46 meters. A shoreline tree that stands fully visible to an observer on their feet should therefore drop out of view and be concealed behind the water’s bulge when the lens sinks down to the water line.

Dan sets out to test this empirically. He heads into the mountains, aims a telephoto lens at a distinctive tree across the seven-kilometer span, and captures shots from multiple heights, meticulously cataloging beach positioning and GPS coordinates to preempt claims of deception. Back in the editing suite, he matches the scale of the shots and levels the horizon. Sure enough, dropping the elevation causes the tree on the opposite shore to drop down and vanish below the water line.

- **Line of sight distance:** 7 km (~4.33 miles) between the southwest dam and Aylmer Canyon. - **Calculated drop:** Earth drops approximately 3.5 meters (11 feet) across that stretch. - **Occlusion shift:** Target occlusion increases from 0.4 meters when viewed standing up to 3.46 meters when viewed right above the water line.

[08:45](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JTfhYyTuT44&t=525s) Addressing Objections: The Jib Shot

Despite the successful initial test, Dan realizes the footage remains vulnerable to bad-faith dismissals by Flat Earthers. His first trial took place on an uncomfortably hot 30-degree Celsius day. Looking through seven kilometers of thick heat shimmer hovering over the cold alpine lake provoked intense atmospheric refraction and mirage effects, occasionally making the lower pebble beach reflect and hover over the tree line. Furthermore, because the camera cuts between distinct locked-off tripod setups, skeptics could easily accuse him of manipulating focal lengths, reframing, or doctoring cuts in post-production.

Two days later, he returns to the lake under optimal conditions: a partly cloudy sky and temperatures 15 degrees cooler, which almost entirely eliminates surface vapor while preserving short lake chop. Crucially, he brings a camera jib. By balancing the camera on the crane arm, he can capture a single, unbroken, unedited continuous take that glides smoothly from a standard standing observer's height all the way down to skim the water's surface.

As the crane dips, the distant shoreline and the target tree are progressively occluded by the horizon of the water in real time, with no cuts or post-production zooms to doubt. Even though the mathematical outcome was predetermined, Dan finds watching the crisp footage back in the studio remarkably powerful.

> “Seeing it at this magnitude, it, it feels profound.” — Dan Olson

He notes that anyone visiting Lake Minnewanka can observe this phenomenon with the naked eye simply by looking at the far shore while standing, then dropping down into a low crouch at the water's edge to watch the opposing bank disappear.

[12:48](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JTfhYyTuT44&t=768s) The Anchorage-to-Denali Fallacy

Despite the clarity of the demonstration, Dan acknowledges that direct refutations fail to convince committed conspiracists. Debunking Flat Earth remains largely futile if the objective is actual persuasion; its genuine appeal lies in the intellectual and creative satisfaction of the exercise. Testing the curvature occupies a sweet spot: it requires thoughtful fieldwork or geometry, but remains fundamentally accessible.

To illustrate how these arguments are assembled, Dan deconstructs a widely circulated Flat Earth trope concerning Mount McKinley (Denali) viewed from Anchorage, Alaska, roughly 129 to 130 miles away. Flat Earthers insist that on a globe, the 20,320-foot peak should be leaning backward away from the viewer and almost half-submerged beneath 9,220 feet of curvature, whereas they claim it appears to stand completely upright and visible from base to summit.

The argument relies on bad assumptions and sensory intuition rather than physical math. While 129 miles does conceal approximately 9,000 feet behind the horizon, Denali's immense 20,320-foot elevation leaves over 11,000 feet of its upper profile exposed. Furthermore, while the mountain does lean away from the observer across the globe's 3,965-mile radius, that tilt amounts to a negligible 1.8 degrees. Dan demonstrates this visually inside 3D modeling software Blender, setting two pyramids side by side—one tilted back 1.8 degrees—to show that the difference is completely indistinguishable to the human eye.

Finally, the mountain base facing Anchorage is 40 miles closer to the observer than the summit is, and rests 1,600 feet above sea level. Observers looking across the distance cannot see the mountain's actual geographic base at all; the peak is merely so colossal that viewers misinterpret its immense upper bulk as the entire mountain standing fully exposed.

- **Denali summit:** 20,320 feet above sea level. - **Distance to Anchorage:** ~129 miles. - **Hidden target height:** ~9,000 feet hidden; ~11,000+ feet remains completely visible. - **Earth radius:** ~3,965 miles. - **Tilt angle across 129 miles:** Only 1.8 degrees away from the observer. - **Topographic factors:** The mountain cluster's front foothills sit 40 miles closer than the peak and are already 1,600 feet above sea level.

[15:15](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JTfhYyTuT44&t=915s) Denali, Compasses, and the Joy of Debunking

Seeing a massive landmark like Denali from tremendous distances often confuses people about the curvature of the Earth, but the explanation is straightforward: viewers typically observe it from an elevated vantage point to clear buildings, trees, and terrain obstructions, which naturally extends the line of sight over the curve. In a photograph taken overlooking Anchorage, the camera is positioned above the city's tallest structures—at least 300 feet up—and Denali remains visible simply because it is immense. In a related visual puzzle involving three-dimensional orientation, Dan Olson notes that it was the pyramid on the right that was leaning away, remarking on the genuine pleasure that comes from unraveling visual and mathematical puzzles.

```mermaid flowchart TD accTitle: Debunking Frame Diagram accDescr: Shows how debunking flat earth claims transitions into scientific puzzles rather than persuading believers. subgraph Claim["Flat Earth Claim"] C1["Fringe / Erroneous Observation"] end subgraph Debunking["Analytical Counter"] D1["Optics & Geometry Lessons"] D2["Sociology of Science Framing"] end subgraph Reality["The Believer's Stance"] R1["Belief Immune to Persuasion"] end Claim --> Debunking Debunking -.->|"Fails to reach"| Reality ```
This dynamic is similarly illustrated by the claim that there are no south-pointing compasses. That assertion serves as an entry point into discussing how scientific conventions subtly privilege the global North through cartography and navigation tools. A compass needle merely aligns itself along lines of geomagnetic flux, meaning every compass simultaneously indicates polarity by pointing toward both the North and South poles at once. Society paints one end red and calls it north-pointing because of linguistic framing, not physical asymmetry.
Dan points out that debunking often functions as lighthearted recreation—packing camera gear, heading into the mountains, sitting by a picturesque lake, and showing off how the physical world works. At times, the claims are merely absurd and funny. He plays a clip of a conspiratorial speaker who passionately insists that heliocentrism was invented by Vatican occultists, that the globe is the “image of the Beast,” and that science's calculated orbital speed of 66,600 miles per hour is suspect, only for the speaker to interrupt himself with the sound of bubbling water: “Hold on I'm taking a hit.” This highlights the baseline reality of the debunking genre:
> “The nonsense claims of Flat Earthers form the starting point of a process of puzzle solving or discussion of geography or a mini lesson in optics, because, at the end of the day, Flat Earthers are not available to be persuaded.”
- Viewing elevation in the Anchorage photograph: At least 300 feet above the ground. - Denali visibility: Enabled by its immense height combined with the observer's elevated viewpoint over local obstructions. - Compass operation: Aligns bidirectionally with planetary magnetic polarity rather than purely seeking the North Pole.
[18:21](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JTfhYyTuT44&t=1101s) Entering Bear Country and Redefining Flat Earth
Shifting to on-location footage by the lake, Dan issues a practical field warning, noting that he and his team are in serious bear country equipped with bear bells and bear spray. It is the tail end of the autumn feeding season, a period when bears aggressively stock up on calories for hibernation by grazing heavily on buffaloberries (often called bison berries) that grow in prime abundance along the lakeshore and up into the canyons.
From there, Dan pivots from recreational debunking to a serious analytical breakdown of what the Flat Earth movement actually represents. The surface-level definition treats it simply as the belief that the planet is flat and that a shadowy cabal keeps this hidden from ordinary people for vague, sinister purposes. While mainstream media profiles usually stop at that description, Dan argues that this misses the core engine of the subculture:
> “I want to go beyond that, though, because I think it’s worth considering that the shape of the earth might actually be the least important belief of Flat Earth.”
Dan redefines Flat Earth as a syncretic Biblical belief system that is both evangelical and apocalyptic. Syncretism operates by stitching together preferred fragments from entirely disconnected sources, treating unrelated texts as pieces of a single puzzle. If two disparate ancient or modern texts mention dragons, a syncretic worldview concludes that both are describing the exact same literal dragon, synthesizing them into a new hybrid reality.
- Location safety: Dan relies on bear bells and bear spray along the lake. - Wildlife behavior: Autumn feeding window for bears foraging buffaloberries ahead of winter denning. - Core premise: The physical shape of the planet is the least critical element of modern Flat Earth ideology.
[20:21](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JTfhYyTuT44&t=1221s) Syncretism, Secularized Theology, and Esoteric Fictionalism
Within Flat Earth discourse, ancient scriptures, modern folklore, and standard conspiracy theories are forcibly hammered into a cohesive whole. Disparate narrative elements sit side by side: the Ark of the Covenant, the Holy Grail, J.R.R. Tolkien’s Ring of Power, MK-Ultra, the John F. Kennedy assassination, and extraterrestrials. One prominent offshoot showcased in the documentary is the “No Forests on Flat Earth” hypothesis, which asserts that geological plateaus and mesas are actually the petrified silica stumps of primordial giant trees, and that the fairy tale of *Jack and the Beanstalk* is an ancestral memory of climbing these pillars into the realm of giants.
```mermaid flowchart LR accTitle: Syncretic Theology of Flat Earth accDescr: Shows the inputs feeding into modern Flat Earth syncretism. subgraph Inputs["Cultural and Scriptural Fragments"] B["Biblical Creation & Apocalypse"] G["Mystic Traditions & Giants"] P["Pop Culture & Esoteric Lore"] C["Political Conspiracies (MK-Ultra, JFK)"] end subgraph Syncretism["Syncretic Worldview"] FE["Flat Earth Paradigm<br/>(Divine Enclosure)"] end B --> FE G --> FE P --> FE C --> FE ```

Dan clarifies that this ideology is specifically syncretic *Biblical* rather than orthodox Christian. Although it borrows language, metaphors, and social frameworks from American Christianity, traditional Christian doctrines—such as redemption through Jesus—are largely marginalized or secularized:

> “In essence modern Flat Earth is an offshoot of Christianity where Jesus is a secondary figure and the primary theological concern is the true nature of the physical world, its origin, and its destiny.”

The movement marries creationist literalism with mystical Gnosticism, pop-culture Egyptology, Babylonian mystery schools, Kabbalah, and what Dan terms “esoteric fictionalism”—the conviction that mainstream fantasy and science-fiction media are coded revelations of actual cosmic history. Because the movement lacks a central hierarchy or unifying foundational scripture, commentators diverge widely on specific points, yet they all orbit around a single unifying conclusion: the Earth is an enclosed divine terrarium, and acknowledging that flatness is indisputable proof that God exists.

- Syncretic components: Merges Biblical texts, Arthurian romance, *The Lord of the Rings*, Anunnaki mythos, and CIA mind-control programs. - The "No Forests" claim: Views rock formations as ancient silica tree stumps stripped by cataclysm. - Theological shift: Centers cosmology, creation, and end-times mechanics while pushing the Gospel message of Jesus into the background.

[23:42](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JTfhYyTuT44&t=1422s) The Evangelical Imperative, Impending Apocalypse, and the Adversarial Worldview

Because Flat Earth operates as an evangelical and apocalyptic faith, it demands absolute dogmatic orthodoxy. Believers hold that universal divine accountability exists, meaning one's eternal salvation or moral standing is directly tied to believing the literal truth of the enclosure. Consequently, convincing others becomes an existential obligation, leading believers to craft strategies for proselytizing—such as advising followers never to lead off with the contentious term "flat earth" when initiating conversations.

Under this worldview, any critic or debunker is not seen merely as someone offering differing empirical evidence; they are viewed as an agent actively trying to block humanity from proving God exists. Compounding this friction is the conviction that the world is hurtling toward an imminent end. While believers rarely fixate on the intricate theological minutiae of the Book of Revelation, they rely on the expectation that God will soon appear to vindicate them:

> “It is difficult to understate the impact on long term planning, the support for policies and politicians, that comes from the belief that at some point in the next generation or two God will just personally show up and wrap up humanity, like a board game being packed back into its box.”

This expectation builds a deep-seated adversarial mindset into the movement. The opposition is not viewed as well-meaning people with differing values, but as an actively malicious force intentionally suppressing cosmic truth. This serves as an impenetrable conspiratorial immune response: all contradictory evidence, scientific consensus, and counter-arguments are instantly dismissed as the deliberate deceit of an enemy dedicated to hiding God.

Dan notes that while fellow video essayists Philosophy Tube (Abigail Thorn) and H.bomberguy (Harry Brewis) made excellent contributions examining Flat Earth through rhetoric, science communication, and sociology, their models remain incomplete because they overlook this dogmatic theological core. Harry goes to great lengths to give believers the benefit of the doubt, while Abigail correctly argues that scientific discussions are heavily mediated by social context and rhetorical persuasion rather than pure data. Yet, as Dan sets up for the rest of his exploration, treating Flat Earthers as confused people who simply suffered a failure of rhetorical persuasion misses the defensive, apocalyptic theology that drives them.

[27:16](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JTfhYyTuT44&t=1636s) The Social Agenda Behind Conspiratorial Beliefs

Treating Flat Earthers as harmless cranks whose frustrations can be steered into a sensible direction fundamentally misunderstands their motives. On the surface, they voice anxieties common to ordinary people: frustration with distant power structures shaping daily life, distrust of media networks controlling information, and cynicism toward social constructs like currency and rent. However, this superficial overlap masks an entirely divergent worldview. While an ordinary person might seek accountability from institutions, Flat Earthers hold radically different beliefs about who holds power and toward what end. They are not neutral seekers tricked by bad experiments; they arrive at Flat Earth because it functions as an ideological weapon that serves their reactionary social politics.

```mermaid flowchart TD accTitle: The Mechanics of Flat Earth Belief accDescr: Flowchart illustrating how conspiratorial anxiety leads believers to delegitimize modern science to defend reactionary ideology. subgraph Anxiety["Root Anxiety"] A["High-Chaos World & Rapid Change"] --> B["Legitimate Distrust of Media/Power"] end subgraph Deconstruction["Reactionary Defense"] B --> C["Simplify Reality via 'Us vs. Them'"] C --> D["Identify 'Them' (Liberals, Gays, Jews)"] D --> E["Reject Science as 'Indoctrination'"] end subgraph Validation["Ultimate Goal"] E --> F["Flat Earth as Physical Proof of God"] end ```
The underlying purpose of conspiratorial thinking is to drastically reduce reality's complexity, collapsing a chaotic, changing world into a binary struggle between an active malevolent cabal and a singular righteous antidote. To these believers, scientific advancement and social progressivism are malicious forces designed to obscure God. Flat Earth delegitimizes modern authority by working backward: it asserts that society is systematically lied to by "them"—typically liberals, Jewish people, or queer communities—to erase the divine order. Consequently, scientific models like heliocentrism are treated as existential moral threats rather than empirical observations.
> "Heliocentrism is simply modern day sun worship masquerading as a science."
- **The Reactionary Alignment:** Believers do not adopt Flat Earth out of genuine intellectual confusion regarding physical data, but because a flat world would serve as indisputable physical validation of their broader ideological, xenophobic, and isolationist commitments. - **Performative Rejection of Evidence:** In 2020, this conspiratorial posture naturally cross-pollinated with public health denialism; as one Flat Earther stated regarding COVID precautions, “Anyone that is voluntarily wearing a mask at this stage is a mindless drone... who couldn't think for themselves if their life depended on it.” - **Low-Trust Media Ecology:** Decades of active institutional sabotage alongside metric-driven, engagement-focused corporate platforms have eroded trust in journalism, leaving open terrain for extreme black-and-white worldviews.
[32:00](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JTfhYyTuT44&t=1920s) Confronting the Community: The Livestream Chat
During his research, Dan Olson joined the live chat of a Flat Earth stream that was broadcasting reruns of conference presentations and community videos. The video being screened explicitly encouraged viewers to perform empirical lake and water-level tests for themselves to observe that the horizon lacks curvature. Having recently traveled to a very long lake to replicate those exact experiments, Olson spoke up in the chat to share his findings in a neutral, non-confrontational manner, explaining that he had conducted the tests and watched both tour boats and the distant shoreline vanish behind the physical curvature of the water.
Rather than grappling with the empirical results, the chat immediately scrambled for ad-hoc rationalizations. They suggested that the disappearing boats were obscured by large waves, but Olson countered that the lake's water was calm and glassy. They suggested the boat was hidden by its own wake, to which he noted the craft was a four-meter-tall commercial tour vessel. Every mechanical variable they raised had already been anticipated and controlled for in his test. Once their physical excuses collapsed, the chat abandoned scientific inquiry entirely and fell back on pure dogma.
> “And... the one guy is just like, well... you must have done it wrong, you did something wrong, pray about it and do it again.”
Dan noted the absurd theological reality of the response: he was effectively being told to "pray the curve away."
[34:36](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JTfhYyTuT44&t=2076s) Algorithmic Rise and Audience Decline
Modern Flat Earth was not an inevitable grass-roots scientific revolution; it was largely created by recommendation algorithms on platforms like YouTube. In an effort to maximize user retention and engagement, recommendation engines regularly fed viewers progressively more concentrated, extreme versions of topics they had initially searched. Cranks producing high volumes of low-effort video content hit YouTube's optimization metrics at the ideal historical moment, and algorithmic systems reinforced early engagement by directing users with conspiratorial or reactionary tendencies straight toward Flat Earth evangelism.
| Flat Earth Metric / Phenomenon | Historical Context & Current Status | |:--- |:--- | | **Top Channel Scale** | Capped at roughly 150,000 subscribers, an exceptionally small footprint on modern YouTube. | | **Recent Video Performance** | Most original pro-Flat-Earth uploads struggle to secure more than a few thousand views. | | **Mark Sargent's Peak Views** | Seminal video *Flat Earth Clues* reached 1.1 million views. | | **Mark Sargent (Post-2018)** | Only two videos surpassed 100,000 views: a repost of Shane Dawson's video and a critique of *Star Wars: The Last Jedi*. | | **YouTube Algorithm Tweaks** | Early 2019 adjustments lowered the ranking of conspiratorial videos, though the community's decline was already underway. | | **Debunking vs. Evangelism** | Mainstream profile and debunking videos routinely receive millions of views, overshadowing authentic Flat Earth uploads. |
As these algorithmic adjustments and cultural fatigue took hold, Flat Earth began slowly bleeding its audience. However, the adherents did not return to reality; they migrated en masse into an even more hostile movement: QAnon.
---
[37:39](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JTfhYyTuT44&t=2259s) The Migration to QAnon
Dan Olson describes QAnon as an esoteric, fascist, apocalyptic cult centered on the belief that an anonymous military intelligence insider known as "Q" leaks high-level national security secrets to self-described "Patriots." According to the lore, Donald Trump's political, institutional, and cultural opponents—the "Deep State" and the Hollywood establishment—serve "The Cabal," an apparatus of Satan-worshiping pedophiles. The conspiracy alleges this elite kidnaps and terrorizes children to harvest adrenochrome, a byproduct of oxidized adrenaline used as a ritual intoxicant.
```mermaid flowchart LR accTitle: The QAnon Narrative Arc accDescr: Diagram illustrating the perceived enemy, the cleansing purge, and the apocalyptic resolution of the QAnon movement. subgraph TheEnemy["The Cabal"] A["Deep State & Hollywood"] --> B["Satanic Child Trafficking & Adrenochrome"] end subgraph TheAction["The Purge"] B --> C["Q Drops to 'Patriots'"] C --> D["The Storm: Mass Military Arrests"] end subgraph TheUtopia["The Resolution"] D --> E["The Great Awakening"] E --> F["Golden Age of Trumpist Restoration"] end ```

By casting opponents as literal monsters engaged in the industrialized abuse of children, the ideology creates a justification for discarding all civil liberties, democratic norms, and human rights. It promises a military tribunal and extrajudicial purge termed "The Storm," which will eradicate political resistance, dismantle the existing administrative order, and inaugurate a utopian golden age dubbed "The Great Awakening."

> “Q has put out there that many high level officials will soon be arrested, and it will actually be the Drain The Swamp scenario that we have, that we have always been wanting to happen.”

[39:32](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JTfhYyTuT44&t=2372s) The Pizzagate Myth and the Secular Apocalypse

Dan Olson examines how QAnon intersects with earlier fringe mythologies, notably the comorbid Pizzagate conspiracy theory. In this belief system, believers imagine hidden pedophile sex dungeons beneath pizza parlors, leading them to interpret ordinary depictions of pizza—a ubiquitous, everyday food—as subliminal code demarcating the boundaries of a vast global conspiracy. While Flat Earth adherents are simply anxious for the end of the world to vindicate their cosmological claims, QAnon functions explicitly as a doomsday cult. However, its apocalypse is secular rather than divine: it envisions military tribunals, mass roundups, and public hangings.

Olson observes that this violent vision is essentially a repackaged version of the "Day of the Rope" from the 1978 neo-Nazi novel *The Turner Diaries*. In some corners of the movement, it is not even disguised—it is quite literally the Day of the Rope, driven by straightforward fascist ideology. Olson cites an excerpt detailing the book:

> “It is in many respects the most hateful book ever written.”

Even though QAnon is deeply rooted in American politics and centers entirely around the presidency of Donald Trump, it has managed to find considerable traction among authoritarian and far-right movements across the globe.

[41:00](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JTfhYyTuT44&t=2460s) Branding, Worldwide Traction, and Hijacking #SaveTheChildren

The rapid international spread of QAnon is largely due to its memorable, adaptable branding. Much like Flat Earth, QAnon possesses an aggressively evangelical streak; its followers are eager to preach to anyone who will listen and utilize easily identifiable symbols and slogans. While standard "Q" and "QAnon" insignias are ubiquitous, the movement also employs covert rallying cries such as the acronym WWG1WGA—standing for "Where We Go One, We Go All," a line lifted from the 1996 Ridley Scott disaster film *White Squall*.

More insidiously, the movement began colonizing the longstanding, generic hashtag `#SaveTheChildren`. By taking over public awareness campaigns for missing and exploited youth, QAnon organizers set up street rallies and meetups that function as a pipeline to attract non-believers. They take genuine, heartbreaking cases of child abuse and use them as an emotional trojan horse to introduce fictional, Satanic abuse conspiracies and the broader canon of QAnon theology. As a quoted commentator points out regarding this recruitment tactic:

> “The messaging here is so insidious is that I'm for children and if you don't come out here you don't love children as much as I do.”

[42:32](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JTfhYyTuT44&t=2552s) The "Big Tent" Conspiracy and *Fall of the Cabal*

Originating in late 2017 on 4chan through cryptic, pseudonymous text dispatches known as "Q drops," the movement eventually migrated to 8chan and its subsequent rebrand, 8kun. Despite these roots, QAnon has evolved into a self-sustaining social media ecosystem. Olson describes QAnon as a "big tent conspiracy," meaning it is elastic enough to accommodate virtually every bizarre alternate belief: anti-vaccine dogma, miracle mineral bleach cures, sovereign citizen tropes, fringe diets, and the various grifters who exploit them. Flat Earth already exhibited this syncretism on a smaller scale, but QAnon expanded the framework into an all-encompassing meta-conspiracy.

A prime artifact of this phenomenon is Janet Ossebaard’s two-and-a-half-hour YouTube docuseries *Fall of the Cabal*, which Olson compares to the 9/11 Truther video *Loose Change* in both structure and cultural impact. Ossebaard’s work gathers disparate, often racist conspiracies—ranging from migrant caravans to Barack Obama's Nobel Peace Prize to foreskin harvesting—and asserts they are all connected components of the Cabal. Even standard 9/11 Trutherism gets folded into the mythos, though altered to suit Q's adoration of state power. Where traditional 9/11 conspiracies accuse the Bush administration of blowing up buildings to manufacture consent for war and the Patriot Act, QAnon followers revere the military and the Department of Homeland Security as Trump-loyal patriots. To reconcile this, the Q narrative invents an absurd compromise: George W. Bush supposedly launched a precision missile strike against the Pentagon to destroy records of Cabal activities. Olson sums up the mindset bluntly:

> “None of that makes sense, don’t try to understand it through the lens of facts, it’s all about loyalty.”

Furthermore, rapid-fire conspiracy media like Ossebaard's video acts as a self-selecting cognitive filter. A curious, analytical viewer with a scientific mindset will be stopped in their tracks within minutes by obvious factual errors, whereas target converts simply absorb the momentum. Olson points out Ossebaard marveling at natural wildfire phenomena: - Fire burning houses while leaving adjacent trees intact (a standard outcome of fast-moving, high-heat urban brushfires). - Exploding cars flipped onto their roofs (the predictable result of ignited gasoline fuel tanks). - Trees burning from the inside out (a common natural occurrence when a dead, fungus-rotted, or dry tree trunk interior ignites through compromised bark while the fire-resistant exterior remains intact).

As Olson laments, a fascinating biological and physical event gets degraded into proof of direct-energy weapons and conspiratorial paranoia.

[47:14](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JTfhYyTuT44&t=2834s) The Authorship of Q and Real-World Consequences

Addressing the origins of the movement, Olson acknowledges that documenting QAnon is a moving target because the subculture rapidly morphs. The exact identity behind the "Q" persona remains unverified, though prominent suspects have surfaced. Evidence indicates the earliest Q drops may have been penned by Coleman Rogers, founder of the livestream channel *Patriots' Soapbox*, who helped popularize "decoding" drops on stream and was once caught inadvertently logging into 8chan as "Q" live on air. Later, following 8chan’s shutdown and subsequent relaunch as 8kun in November 2019, ownership of the moniker appears to have shifted to site administrator Jim Watkins or someone close to him. However, Olson argues that pinpointing the individual typist is somewhat secondary:

> “Whether or not Rogers or Watkins are or were the anonymous authors of the Q drops, they are publicly collaborators and enablers of the movement, and benefit from it in money and influence.”

The true danger lies in the concrete, real-world harms generated by these delusions. Olson outlines how the ideology appeals heavily to vulnerable parents engaged in bitter divorce and child custody proceedings. Convinced that their families are threatened, individuals immerse themselves in conspiratorial subcultures, adopting extreme behaviors such as feeding their children industrial bleach or restrictive all-meat diets:

- When an alienated spouse, family members, or Child Protective Services step in to safeguard the children, the QAnon adherent views the intervention as retaliatory confirmation that the Deep State is hunting them for "knowing too much." - The delusion drives drastic, dangerous escalation. On June 11, 2020, an adherent named Alpalus Slyman suffered a severe mental breakdown, kidnapping his five children and fleeing law enforcement in a 110-mile-per-hour pursuit. - During the high-speed chase, Slyman live-streamed his panic to Facebook, pleading into his phone: *“Donald Trump I need a miracle, or something, somebody, QAnon help me.”*

[50:53](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JTfhYyTuT44&t=3053s) Real-World Violence and the Escalation of Radical Beliefs

The real-world danger of conspiratorial thinking ceases to be an abstract online curiosity when believers turn toward direct, armed action. In July 2020, Corey Hurren drove a pickup truck straight through the gates of 1 Sussex Drive in Ottawa—the residence of Canada’s Governor General and the temporary home of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Armed with a rifle and a handgun, Hurren roamed the property before being taken into custody by the RCMP. Prior to the assault, he had written a letter to his Canadian Rangers supervisor framing his mission as a defense against a supposed communist dictatorship, having spent the preceding months steeping himself in QAnon culture and broadcasting a sprawling taxonomy of conspiratorial hashtags across social media. Two years earlier, another believer, Matthew Wright, halted traffic on the Hoover Dam bypass with an armored vehicle, holding out for over an hour to demand the public release of the Office of the Inspector General report, which believers insisted contained secret indictments against an entrenched cabal.

When questioned about this burgeoning movement during a pandemic press briefing, Donald Trump conspicuously declined to condemn it, remarking instead that its adherents loved the country and appreciated him. This tacit indulgence underscores how movements like QAnon do not create violent tendencies from whole cloth so much as they weaponize existing grievances. By providing a grand, moralizing framework, the conspiracy hands volatile individuals an external imperative that justifies taking extreme, potentially fatal steps.

As Dan Olson observes, “This is the radicalizing effect of cults like Q: it attracts and enables people with personalities that are already inclined towards these kinds of actions, and gives them a reason to take it further.”

- Corey Hurren breached Rideau Hall grounds on July 2, 2020, armed with multiple firearms. - Hurren’s social media posts linked the COVID-19 pandemic directly to classic QAnon tropes, including adrenochrome harvesting, Pizzagate, and deep-state intrigue. - Matthew Wright’s June 2018 Hoover Dam standoff centered on unreleased government files alleged to substantiate secret tribunals.

[53:13](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JTfhYyTuT44&t=3193s) The Fluid Mechanics of Lore and Decoding "Q Drops"

Flat Earth and QAnon operate on the same structural trick: the fine details are disposable, while the broad, emotionally satisfying narrative remains supreme. Adherents are not particularly bothered by factual gaps, mutual contradictions, or rapidly shifting doctrines because the specifics merely provide rolling entertainment. A fixation can emerge overnight—such as the sudden explosion of adrenochrome panics in 2020, despite having lingered in fringe spaces since late 2017—or anchor itself to topical obsessions like hydroxychloroquine or bleach regimens, only to be discarded without hesitation once the community’s attention drifts.

This churn is organized around an alternate-reality game aesthetic that invites community decoding. An anonymous figure posting as "Q" periodically publishes deliberately vague, elliptical fragments known as "drops" or "crumbs." Drop 142 typifies the formula: an erratic sequence of leading questions touching on George Soros, Hitler, German bloodlines, the Titanic disaster, Hollywood films, and the Federal Reserve, capped off with military codenames. These nonsensical prompts allow followers to invent their own consensus-driven reality, transforming conspiracy consumption into an interactive puzzle. The narration pauses briefly for Dan’s own immediate, physical surroundings as he hikes the lakeside trail, weary and scanning the repetitive poplar trees past his trail markers, searching for the exact reference point he needs for his camera setup.

Dan Olson notes, “The reason the fragmentary, shoddy, and contradictory ideas of Flat Earth are so easy for most adherents to accept are because they’re principally interested in the broad strokes, and, indeed, the broad strokes are all that matters.”

[56:47](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JTfhYyTuT44&t=3407s) Unfalsifiable Mythology and the Desire for Authoritarian Control

Although official forum posts are supposedly authenticated by cryptographic tripcodes, the narrative ecosystem does not even require an official post to canonize an idea. The pervasive adrenochrome myth, essentially an updated iteration of medieval anti-Semitic blood libel, became a foundational pillar of QAnon without ever being mentioned in a verified drop. Concurrently, every explicit, falsifiable timeline proposed by the movement—specifying fixed dates for mass arrests, executive purges, or public exposure of the Deep State—has failed to materialize.

Rather than shattering the illusion, failed predictions serve to harden the belief system. In the eyes of the faithful, an averted reckoning merely proves how vastly capable and omnipresent the enemy must be. Behind the elaborate rationalizations of multidimensional political chess lies an underlying yearning for absolute power. Followers are troubled not by authoritarianism, but by the fact that their chosen leader has not exerted enough raw force to unilaterally crush his opposition and enforce their worldview.

Reflecting on this circular logic, Dan Olson states, “Likewise, every failed Q prediction simply becomes reinforcing evidence of just how powerful, and thus dangerous, the mythological Deep State really is.”

- Official forum posts rely on tripcodes for user identity, yet community-generated additions spread just as effectively. - Core mythologies, such as child blood extraction, adapt ancient folklore prejudices without requiring direct sanction from the anonymous author. - Prophecies of coordinated military tribunals and mass roundups routinely pass without incident, only to be reinterpreted as proof of deep-state cunning.

[58:46](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JTfhYyTuT44&t=3526s) The Psychology of the Scam, Social Isolation, and Monetization

The tragedy underlying the movement stems from the sharp divergence between political fantasy and material reality. Supporters anticipated tangible restoration and personal elevation under a hardline, nationalist administration, but found their material circumstances stagnant or declining under a self-serving grifter. To acknowledge this failure would require confronting the painful embarrassment of being deceived. Instead, believers retreat into the slogan "Trust The Plan," treating their patience as an act of patriotic duty. This defensive response alienates family and friends who push back, driving believers into insulated social circles where only true believers are tolerated.

The social dislocation brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic drastically quickened this cycle, feeding an influx of anxious, isolated people into conspiratorial funnels. Wherever desperate attention gathers, opportunists inevitably follow. The ecosystem is inundated with political operatives looking to harness votes, alternative-media pundits harvesting clicks, and merchandising merchants peddling branded apparel. Beyond the cynical hucksters and radicalized extremists, the overarching allure remains psychological: the comforting illusion that a turbulent, incomprehensible world is actually a scripted television show, moving predictably toward a satisfying, orchestrated conclusion.

Analyzing the emotional trap, Dan Olson explains, “One of the most insidious elements of a confidence scam is that the victims who invested the most are often the most passionate defenders, because shame is a powerful force in the human psyche, and they can’t bear the shame of admitting they were tricked.”

[01:01:29](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JTfhYyTuT44&t=3689s) The Radicalization Pipeline and Forcing the End

Casual observers might treat conspiracy spaces like an alternate reality game, dabbling briefly before bouncing off due to obnoxious believers, website server crashes, or mere boredom. But for many, QAnon serves as an active radicalization pipeline. People arrive carrying undefined anxieties and a generalized sense of unease about the modern world, and QAnon immediately overwhelms them with answers. These answers are contradictory, bizarre, and incoherent—such as decoding Donald Trump's accidental tweet "covfefe" as an intentional cipher referring to the preservation of presidential social media posts under the COVFEFE Act—yet they are delivered with supreme confidence and volume. As adherents spend hours decoding posts or watching influencers do it for them, they are trained to see facts not as objective truths, but as mutable game pieces to be rearranged so long as the promised conclusion remains intact.

```mermaid flowchart TD accTitle: The QAnon Radicalization Flowchart accDescr: A progression showing how vague grievances lead to outcome-based logic and accelerationism. subgraph Onboarding ["Initial Stage"] A["Generalized Unease & Systemic Anxiety"] --> B["Deluge of Confident Lore & Decoding"] end subgraph Conditioning ["Cognitive Shift"] B --> C["Fixation on Desired Outcomes: The Storm"] C --> D["Facts Become Mutable Game Pieces"] end subgraph Extremism ["Radicalization Endpoint"] D --> E["Disillusionment with Failed Prophecies"] E --> F["Accelerationism: Forcing the End"] end ```
Through this conditioning, a person can start with an entirely valid criticism—like the corrupt financial ties between politicians and private health insurers—and eventually arrive at the conviction that 5G towers spread COVID-19, requiring a violent fascist crackdown on Black Lives Matter protesters and outright war with China. When predicted deadlines continually pass without mass arrests, some believers break away not to return to normal life, but to join hardcore accelerationist circles. This dynamic mirrors doomsday cults where followers attempt "forcing the end": taking it upon themselves to engineer the chaos, death, and social collapse required for prophecy to materialize. Dan Olson warns how easily the mantra turns dangerous: “And for people who have steeped themselves in these ideas, that there is a foretold day of reckoning that is directly contingent on a specific man’s access to political power, and been told over and over and over again to suppress disillusionment with the lack of desired results and ‘trust the plan’, it is a very small leap to deciding that The Plan all along was Q training them to be the instrument of The Storm and now they need to take matters into their own hands.”
A recorded clip from a QAnon video highlights this exact pressure cooker. The speaker frets over the timing of the promised military tribunal operations, claiming that waiting too long will cause frustrated patriots to snap and carry out vigilante executions: - “And what's happening is, what the Lord has shown me is that if they wait too long, which I don't think they will, but if they do, is that it could be another Mogadishu or another Benghazi where the patriots will rise up and say enough's enough, they will take matters into their own hands and they will drag their dead bodies through the streets.” - The speaker urges that the Trump administration must conduct high-profile arrests and "perp walk them on national television" before the campaign cycle kicks off in January, otherwise the public will see it as naked political retribution against opponents.
[01:05:58](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JTfhYyTuT44&t=3958s) Restorative Authoritarianism and Simplifying the World
It is tempting for outsiders to get bogged down in the baroque absurdities of Q lore—such as secret Satanic child-eating rings, adrenochrome harvesting, or claims that statues of Moloch oversee American metropolises. Dan Olson argues that obsessing over these bizarre plot points misses the forest for the trees. Stripped of its sensational set dressing, QAnon is fundamentally driven by a longing for restorative authoritarianism: the hope that a ruthless strongman will seize absolute power and violently put society back "where it belongs."
```mermaid flowchart LR accTitle: Structural Complexity versus QAnon Reductionism accDescr: Comparing the reality of decentralized systemic forces with the conspiratorial fantasy of a single coordinated enemy. subgraph Reality ["Material Reality"] A1["Generational Inequity"] A2["Decentralized Institutions"] A3["Historical Inertia"] end subgraph Conspiracism ["QAnon Reduction"] B1["The Cabal"] B2["Restorative Authoritarian Strongman"] end Reality -.->|"Reduced into"| Conspiracism ```

Like Flat Earth, the movement reflects deep distress over an impossibly complex world. An accurate geopolitical map would depict thousands of disparate factions, competing interests, historical momentum, and shifting alliances. QAnon flattens this overwhelming chaos into a clean, singular villain: one tangible Cabal with a deliberate, unified agenda. By doing so, the believer can dismiss structural critique entirely. Acknowledging structural issues requires admitting that modern suffering is the consequence of unguided historical forces, systemic injustice, and compounding generational failures with no grand director behind the wheel. QAnon adherents reject this responsibility, preferring to imagine that evil is deliberately engineered by specific bad actors who can simply be eliminated to restore a righteous order.

- “If you want to cut through the noise, it’s this: the unifying theme is a desire for a sort of restorative authoritarianism, for a strong man to come in and forcibly put everything back ‘where it belongs.’” - “All the world’s complexity, all the chaos, it’s all the fault of one group. Not an ideology, not a worldview, not historical inertia, not anything so nebulous as the way we think about the world. A single, tangible, identifiable group with a written agenda.”

[01:08:46](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JTfhYyTuT44&t=4126s) Magical Thinking, Reactionary Resentment, and Power

The genuine source of anxiety for QAnon followers is not the systemic injustices plaguing the world, but the social movements that point them out. Calls for climate action, LGBTQ+ equality, racial justice, reproductive freedom, and protests against police brutality or corporate privatization disrupt the status quo. To a reactionary mindset, the disruption itself constitutes an assault on the natural hierarchy. This worldview operates on magical thinking: the conviction that naming an issue is what creates it. In their eyes, talking about systemic police violence is what conjures racial tension out of thin air. Consequently, their only desired solution is not reform or justice, but total suppression—they want an authoritarian power to step in and silence critics so their illusion of stability remains intact.

Because this mindset is fundamentally invested in defending social hierarchies, it cannot be dislodged with evidence or fact-checking. Trying to debate a QAnon believer about the physical realities of industrial carbon emissions or electoral systems fails because their assertions do not emerge from factual deduction; they stem from a desperate psychological defense of power. Dan Olson notes that QAnon marks the acute final stage of reactionary anxiety, where the friction between reality and dogma forces the believer to treat reality itself as an adversary. The belief system is entirely subordinate to the political ends it justifies—namely, crushing their opponents and securing uncontested rule.

- “Talking about police brutality wills police brutality into existence. A disruption of the status quo is seen as a disruption of the natural order. The problem they see is that no one has made those people shut up.” - “All reactionary movements are in tension with reality, a tension that eventually results in psychological crisis, and belief systems like QAnon are the endpoint of that crisis, the point where reality itself becomes an enemy. Because ultimately it’s not about facts, it’s about power.” - “QAnon, what it accepts, what it believes, is driven by the outcomes it justifies.” - This outcome-first mindset is encapsulated by a quoted follower hoping the apocalyptic purge occurs before electoral politics interfere: “Hopefully all this stuff goes down and there is an awakening and everyone lines up behind President Trump.”

[01:11:59](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JTfhYyTuT44&t=4319s) The Will to Override Truth

A political candidate—Marjorie Taylor Greene—declares her devotion to Donald Trump, stating, “I think he's the greatest president that we'll have in our lifetimes, and I'm grateful for all he's doing, and I'm proudly running for congress in Georgia's 14th district.” This overt allegiance underscores the core psychological mechanism uniting these conspiratorial movements. The fundamental reason adherents are unbothered by Q constantly making false predictions, riddled with glaring inconsistencies, blatant contradictions, and claims that are materially wrong, is rooted in social dominance. Rejecting truth provides them leverage and power over everyone else who remains bound by something as weak and flimsy as reality.

They claim an uncompromising stance against corruption while pinning their ultimate hopes on an openly corrupt leader, and this blatant double standard is not an accidental flaw—the naked hypocrisy is the entire point. Adherents effortlessly carve out an exception for themselves and their leaders precisely because doing so makes them feel exceptional. Engaging in wild hypocrisy serves as an aggressive act of domination, holding onto demonstrably false claims out of pure spite. In their view, power naturally belongs to those possessing the greatest will to seize it, and asserting falsehoods over verifiable facts becomes the ultimate demonstration of that will. Dan Olson delivers the core thesis of the essay: “Their will is a hammer that they are using to beat reality itself into a shape of their choosing, a simple world where reality is exactly what it looks like through their eyes, devoid of complexity, devoid of change, where they are right and their enemies are silent.” In doing so, whether through literal geometric denial or sweeping fascist political conspiracies, they are fundamentally trying to construct a Flat Earth.

```mermaid flowchart TD accTitle: The Authoritarian Will Against Reality accDescr: Flowchart illustrating how rejecting truth functions as an act of power and control.
subgraph EndGoal["The Desired World"] C --> D["Beat Reality into Chosen Shape"] D --> E["Flat Earth Worldview:<br/>Simple, Unchanging, Silenced Enemies"] end ```
- Marjorie Taylor Greene overtly ties her political bid for Georgia's 14th congressional district to her veneration of Donald Trump. - The contradictions, failed prophecies, and material inaccuracies of conspiratorial movements like QAnon do not weaken belief; instead, adopting them functions as an intentional flex of will over consensus reality. - The ultimate goal uniting these belief systems is to forge a world stripped of complexity and change, elevating the believer while completely silencing their opposition.
Reading summary
In In Search Of A Flat Earth, Dan Olson argues that conspiratorial subcultures like Flat Earth and QAnon are not failures of empirical reasoning or science communication, but reactionary, apocalyptic projects driven by a desire for restorative authoritarianism and the will to overpower consensus reality. Empirical Testing and the Limits of Debunking (5:01) At Lake Minnewanka, Olson tests Flat Earth claims across a seven-kilometer sightline using a camera jib, demonstrating that lowering the camera to the water line obscures roughly 3.5 meters of the opposing shoreline behind the water's curvature. A similar mathematical analysis refutes the popular claim that Mount McKinley (Denali) should be hidden behind 9,220 feet of curvature when viewed from Anchorage 129 miles away. Because Denali rises 20,320 feet above sea level, over 11,000 feet of its peak remains exposed, tilting away at an imperceptible 1.8-degree angle. While conducting such field experiments offers intellectual satisfaction, Olson emphasizes that empirical refutations fail to convince committed believers. When Olson presented his controlled lake observations in a pro-Flat Earth livestream chat, participants bypassed the physical data entirely, inventing mechanical excuses before ultimately retreating to dogma and instructing him to pray about the result. Syncretic Theology and Reactionary Defense (20:21) Olson redefines Flat Earth as an evangelical, apocalyptic, and syncretic belief system rather than an orthodox Christian faith or an earnest geometric inquiry. Adherents synthesize fragments from disparate sources—ranging from Biblical scripture and esoteric lore to pop culture and standard political conspiracies—to depict the Earth as an enclosed, divine terrarium. Traditional theological concepts such as redemption through Jesus are marginalized, subordinating doctrine to the primary objective of proving God's physical architecture. This cosmology serves as an ideological defense against modern social complexity. Believers reduce systemic societal friction into a binary conflict against a malevolent elite, categorizing scientific models like heliocentrism as existential moral deceptions. Confronted with contradictory evidence, adherents deploy an adversarial immune response, viewing debunkers not as well-meaning observers but as malicious actors intentionally concealing divine truth. Algorithmic Pipelines and the Turn to QAnon (37:39) Modern Flat Earth was heavily elevated by recommendation algorithms that maximized platform engagement by funneling curious users toward increasingly extreme content. As platform adjustments in 2019 and viewer fatigue curtailed channel reach, adherents did not return to consensus reality; instead, they migrated into QAnon, which Olson characterizes as a big-tent, fascist, apocalyptic movement. Unlike Flat Earth's expectation of divine intervention, QAnon anticipates a secular, state-administered purge known as 'The Storm' to execute political enemies and rescue children from an alleged Satanic elite. The movement rapidly expanded by co-opting public awareness efforts like the #SaveTheChildren hashtag, using genuine concern for child protection as an onboarding mechanism. This radicalization pipeline normalizes extreme paranoia, driving volatile individuals to armed standoffs, high-speed kidnappings, and incursions into government residences. Restorative Authoritarianism and Overriding Reality (65:58) Repeated predictive failures, such as unfulfilled dates for mass military tribunals, do not weaken adherence within QAnon. Instead, followers interpret delays as evidence of the Cabal's immense reach. Olson argues that focusing on bizarre narrative details obscures the core attraction: an intense desire for restorative authoritarianism, wherein a strongman uses unchecked power to forcibly return society to an imagined traditional hierarchy. Adherents embrace blatant double standards and factual contradictions as demonstrations of social power. Because reactionary movements view calls for social equality as disruptions of the natural order, they treat reality itself as an adversary. Adopting demonstrable falsehoods becomes an aggressive assertion of will—an effort to hammer reality into an unyielding, simplified shape where their social standing is absolute and opposing voices are silenced. Olson concludes that conspiratorial movements cannot be disassembled through factual debate because their beliefs are subordinate to the political and psychological outcomes they justify. The ultimate aim across both literal geometric denial and fascist political mythologies is the enforcement of a simplified world devoid of nuance, accountability, or systemic change.
精炼阅读摘要
Dan Olson在视频论述中指出,地平说与QAnon等阴谋论的核心动力并非基于经验事实的认知缺陷,而是出于对复杂现实与社会变革的深层抵触;信徒通过断然否定既定现实与科学共识,试图以主观意志强行建构一个等级分明、消除异见且由威权力量主导的确定世界。 经验实证的局限与反驳的解谜本质 (5:01) 在加拿大阿尔伯塔省的明尼万卡湖(Lake Minnewanka),Dan Olson通过精密测算与现场拍摄对地平论者的核心主张进行了实地验证。该湖由于人工筑坝水位抬高了25米以上,其长达7公里的视线距离不受开阔洋流干扰。几何计算表明,7公里跨度对应的地表弧度下降约为3.5米,若将视线从站立高度降至贴近水面,对岸的遮挡高度将从0.4米跃升至3.46米。Olson通过安装在摇臂上的长焦镜头完成了无剪辑连续拍摄,直接记录了对岸树木与地表在镜头下沉时被湖水曲率遮蔽的物理过程。同时,针对地平论者引用在129英里外仍能看到德纳利峰(Denali)来否定地球曲率的流行说法,Olson指出这忽略了山体自身超过20,320英尺的巨大垂直体量,在消除视线阻挡后,约9,000英尺被弧度隐藏依然会留下11,000多英尺的可视轮廓,且1.8度的视线后倾在肉眼中无法分辨。 然而这类严密的实证与几何释疑对深信者并无说服效果。Olson认为,反驳地平说的真正吸引力在于研究者自身获得的心智满足,即把荒谬主张作为展开光学、地理学或科学社会学探讨的解谜起点。当他在地平论者的直播讨论区客观分享自己在湖区观察到游船被水面曲率遮蔽的测试结果时,社群不仅提出各种缺乏事实支撑的技术借口,最终更是放弃物理辩论,要求他“祈祷以消除曲率”。这表明此类信条本质上具备免疫客观事实纠错的防御机制。 地平说的融合性神学与末世防御机制 (18:21) Olson进一步剖析指出,地平说的表面信条——即地球的物理形状与掩盖真相的阴谋——其实是该运动中最次要的部分;其深层结构是一种融合性的末世圣经信仰系统。该体系通过拼贴圣经文本、古代神话、通俗科幻设定乃至中情局精神控制等阴谋论,将互不相干的碎片强行缝合为单一世界观。正统基督教中关于耶稣救赎的核心教义在其中被边缘化,取而代之的是将地球视为一个由上帝特意封闭圈养的微型容器,物理层面的平坦被他们视为上帝确实存在的决定性证据。 这种教义赋予了信徒强烈的福传责任与末日紧迫感。他们相信上帝将在未来一两代人内降临并结束人类历史,因而将任何科学反驳者均视为阻挠人类证明上帝存在的恶意代言人。这种黑白分明的对抗性思维将多元复杂的现代制度、科学发展与进步议题统统归咎于旨在抹除神圣秩序的阴谋集团。地平说因此并非误信错误数据的结果,而是一种防御性意识形态工具,旨在借由否定现代权威,为信徒狭隘的反动社会政治取向提供宇宙论上的神圣背书。 推荐算法衰退与向QAnon阴谋的大规模转移 (34:36) 现代地平说在网络上的崛起并非自发的民间科学运动,很大程度上是YouTube等平台为追求用户留存率而优化的推荐算法所促成的产物。高产且低成本的猎奇视频精准踩中了平台指标,算法向具有反动倾向的用户持续推荐更为极端的观点。然而随着平台在2019年初微调算法降低此类内容权重,加之受众文化疲劳,纯粹的地平说频道遭遇了严重的流量下滑,头部创作者的内容点击量跌入低谷。 然而信徒群体并未因此回归现实理性,而是顺应类似的叙事逻辑大规模流入更具侵略性与危害性的QAnon运动。QAnon吸收了传统反犹血祭迷信与多重流行阴谋论,构建出深层国家与精英阶层绑架儿童提炼肾上腺素红的荒诞指控,并承诺通过所谓“风暴”行动实施法外军事清洗,最终实现救赎式的“大觉醒”。作为一个极具弹性的“大帐篷”阴谋网络,它包容了反疫苗、伪医学等各类极化思想,并借由占据“拯救儿童”(#SaveTheChildren)等公益标签作为诱导大众的管道,将朴素的情感关切逐步引向极端化的末世意识形态。 叙事解谜机制驱动的现实暴力与加速主义 (47:14) QAnon与地平说在结构上共享相同的心理游戏机制:具体细节自相矛盾或随时被抛弃并不影响大局,宏大且能满足情感宣泄的框架始终居于核心。通过所谓匿名“Q”定期发布的含糊线索,受众在集体解码互动中获得了参与另类实境游戏的快感。在这种闭环中,运动做出的所有明确预言——包括大规模抓捕的时间表——虽然一次次落空,但信徒非但没有破灭幻象,反而将失败解释为“深层国家”势力的庞大与凶险,从而进一步强化了“相信计划”的教条。 这种脱离客观逻辑的深层偏执在现实中造成了确凿的伤害。运动吸引了许多在抚养权争端等生活困境中陷入精神危机的脆弱个体,诱使其采取包括高速绑架逃窜在内的过激行为。更为危险的是,当预言迟迟无法兑现且对现实的解释彻底失效时,部分激进化信徒走向了加速主义,试图“强行促成终局”。多起携带重型武装冲击政府官邸或封锁公共设施的恶性事件表明,这种末世崇拜向具有暴力倾向的个体提供了道德正当性,使其自认必须亲自充当扫除政治对手的处决工具。 恢复性威权冲动与凌驾客观真理的权力意志 (65:58) 透过光怪陆离的阴谋论外表,Olson指出其核心本质是对“恢复性威权主义”(restorative authoritarianism)的强烈渴望。面对由分散机构、历史惯性与深层系统性不平等构成的复杂现实,信徒无法承受无序世界带来的焦虑,因而将全部混乱简化为一个具体且拥有明确恶意的敌对实体,寄望于冷酷的政治强人以暴力手段彻底肃清异己,将社会强制复位至他们想象中的固有等级秩序。在这种心理机制下,指出系统性问题反而被指责为制造混乱的根源,他们所追求的并不是解决现实困境,而是通过权力压制让批评者永久噤声。 因此,信徒对显而易见的逻辑漏洞、落空预言以及所追随领袖自身的腐败毫不介怀。明目张胆的双重标准与虚伪不仅不是理论缺陷,反而构成了支配他人的手段。在他们看来,恪守事实是弱者的枷锁,而坚持虚假叙事则是对共识现实的权力宣示。正如Olson所总结,信徒将自身意志作为铁锤,试图将复杂的客观世界敲打成自身所期望的扁平形状——在这个被剥离了深度与变革的虚拟平原上,唯有自身绝对正确,而一切对手皆被剥夺发声的权利。 该作品揭示出,无论是否定行星几何曲率的地平说,还是虚构政治肃清的QAnon,当代极化阴谋论的本质均非信息匮乏引起的认识论失误,而是对权力再分配与多元现实的防御性抗拒。然而,当庞大群体选择将主观信念置于可验证的事实之上,并寄望以独裁手段规避现代性复杂挑战时,社会共识机制与民主制度的根基将持续面临严峻考验。
That the water surface is completely flat.") Dan Olson 随即叫停并回溯:为什么要去证明地球曲率?早在五六年前,他就对地平论(Flat Earth)产生了浓厚兴趣——并非出于相信,而是作为一个局外旁观者。他热衷于追踪这群人的动向,观看他们的纪录片,浏览各种迷因和信息图表,并在 Twitter 上找乐子调侃他们。他曾计划就此制作一期视频,但当时被他戏称为“已知月球重犯”的 YouTuber 创作者 Hbomberguy 抢先发布了一期地平论长视频。Dan 幽默地解释道,碍于所谓的“YouTube 社区准则与规章第 7.2.1 条‘超时间排他条款’”(即非正式的“同类题材先占权”),他不得不将自己的视频计划搁置了一年多。 真正让他重新燃起创作冲动的,是 2017 年某个夜晚偶然看到的一个地平论视频《地平论证据 1:水平面》("Flat Earth proof 1: the level")。这部时长一个半小时的片子在同类内容中并无太多新意,基本是从另一个体量更小的频道盗录拼接而成的素材,塞满了地平论者的经典套路:搞不懂重力、对山体真实尺度的庞大毫无概念、基础数学算得一塌糊涂。然而,视频作者做了一项“原创调查”——他亲自跑到了明尼万卡湖边架设相机。 而明尼万卡湖,距离 Dan Olson 的家仅仅 90 分钟车程。“地平论就在我自家后院。”如果想去反驳一个四年前发布、最初只有几百播放量的冷门地平论视频,他完全可以在晴朗的日子开车前往湖边,架起手头最长焦段的镜头。用他自己的话来说,这听起来十分荒唐。 - 明尼万卡湖出水口历经三次筑坝:1895 年(木质防洪水坝)、1912 年(水电水坝)、1941 年(现存水坝与堤道)。 - 历次筑坝使湖泊水位上升超过 25 米,淹没原始湖岸、历史城镇以及古代斯托尼纳科达遗址。 - 地平论视频核心套路:曲解引力机制、误判大型山脉尺度、数学计算漏洞。 --- ### [05:01](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JTfhYyTuT44&t=301s) 湖畔的曲率实验与首次拍摄的缺陷 Dan Olson 详细分析了地平论视频中选址明尼万卡湖的合理性与挑战。原视频创作者将相机架在距水面不到一英尺(约 30 厘米)的高度,拉近镜头拍摄对岸,声称能清晰看到对岸海岸线,从而断言水面绝无曲率。 Dan 指出,选择明尼万卡湖作为实验场地其实极为明智: 1. **视线开阔且距离适中**:湖面极其狭长,沿岸存在数公里毫无遮蔽的视线范围,其距离足以体现地球曲率,同时周边的山体地形又能提供明确可辨认的对岸地标。 2. **水面干扰极小**:水体尺度足够提供长距离视线,但又没有大到会产生显著的潮汐运动;水面的波纹几乎全由微风吹拂引起,没有海洋中汹涌翻滚的巨浪。 从湖泊西南岸的水坝位置,眺望艾尔默峡谷(Aylmer Canyon)与湖水相交处的岩崩区,视线距离正好为 7 公里(约 4.33 英里)。根据地球曲率公式计算,在 7 公里的距离上,地表向下弯曲沉降约 3.5 米(11 英尺)。这个距离堪称完美:对岸物体依然清晰可辨,而曲率导致的视线遮挡又十分显著。如果在曲率计算器中输入具体参数: - 观察点紧贴水面时,7 公里处被遮挡的隐蔽高度为 3.46 米; - 观察点上升到普通成年人站立高度时,被遮挡的高度锐减到仅 0.4 米。 这意味着,一棵生长在湖水边缘的树木,从站立视角看几乎可以窥其全貌;而当视点压低至接近水面时,它就会被湖水明显遮挡。Dan Olson 认为,原版地平论视频里的画面实际上已经拍到了对岸陆地因曲率而下沉消失的现象,只不过对方视频的分辨率过低,难以清晰辨识。 为了彻底消除歧义以说服地平论者,Dan Olson 开车带着设备前往湖畔展开首次实测。他花费一个小时将镜头瞄准对岸的一棵树,细致记录下所有参数:相机在湖滩上的摆放坐标、距水面近似高度,甚至包括手机 GPS 截屏定位。然而,将素材导入电脑并在后期统一地平线、统一画面缩放比例后,虽然画面确实呈现出“随着视点降低,树木下半部分沉入湖面水线之下”,Dan 却清醒地意识到地平论者会如何挑刺: - **热霾折射干扰**:首次拍摄当天温度高达 30 摄氏度,湖面水汽大量蒸发。视线贴近水面相当于穿透 7 公里长的水蒸气层;水面剧烈的垂直气温梯度加剧了大气折射,引发海市蜃楼般的蜃景现象,导致脚下的砾石滩时隐时现,甚至与树体相互穿插。对方完全可以轻描淡写地将其斥为“水汽热效应”。 - **镜头缺乏连续性**:各个高度的画面全都是固定机位分别拍摄后剪辑拼凑的,没有一镜到底的连续运动。只要镜头出现剪辑点,对方就能指责制作者在切镜时做了手脚,或是后期调色、缩放改变了焦距参数。 ```mermaid flowchart LR accTitle: 湖面视点高度与曲率遮挡对比 accDescr: 展示在7公里距离下,站立高度与贴近水面时对岸物体的遮挡差异 subgraph StandingPos["站立视角(约1.7米高)"] A1["观察点高"] --> B1["7公里处遮蔽高度仅 0.4米"] B1 --> C1["对岸树木近乎完整可见"] end subgraph WaterPos["贴近水面视角(不足0.3米)"] A2["观察点低"] --> B2["7公里处遮蔽高度达 3.46米"] B2 --> C2["树木下半截被弯曲湖面吞没"] end ``` - 观测基线:西南水坝至艾尔默峡谷岩崩区,距离 7 公里(4.33 英里)。 - 地表曲率沉降值:7 公里处几何沉降约 3.5 米(11 英尺)。 - 视点高度对遮挡的影响:贴近水面遮挡 3.46 米;成年人站立高度遮挡 0.4 米。 - 首次拍摄的环境缺陷:30℃ 高温带来的水汽蒸发、大气折射蜃景,以及分段机位剪辑缺乏连续性。 --- ### [09:45](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JTfhYyTuT44&t=585s) 摇臂一镜到底与深切的震撼 为了消除所有借口,两天之后,Dan 再次驱车赶往明尼万卡湖。这一次的天气转为局部多云,气温骤降了 15 度。尽管风势让湖面激起了更多细碎的碎浪,但水波短促,完全不会像海浪那样产生大幅度起伏;更重要的是,水面几乎不再有肉眼可见的热蒸气溢出。为了彻底解决剪辑作伪的质疑,他专门带来了一台摇臂(jib),能够让长焦镜头在单一连续的平滑运镜中,从站立视点直接无缝降落至紧贴水面。 当摇臂镜头顺畅压低,对岸的树木和地标如同被水面平整吞没一般缓缓下沉消失。Dan Olson 在湖边现场透过监视器回看时,就已经确认成功捕捉到了预想的画面。然而,当他回到工作室,在高清大屏幕上看到那份纤毫毕现的细节时,内心的感受远超技术验证本身。 他在旁白中感慨:“你知道的,当你在湖滩上时,其实光凭肉眼也能看到这一现象。你可以在对岸选定一个参照物,先站着看,然后蹲下,整个人贴近水面,你就能看到它被遮挡住了,但是……以这样的画面体量看到它,感觉……这感觉真的很震撼人心。”(“You know, you can see this just with the naked eye when you're out there on the beach... McKinley,现正式更名为德纳利峰 Denali),距离长达 130 英里;如果地球是个球体,这座海拔 20,320 英尺(约 6,194 米)的高峰不仅应该向后倾斜远离观察者,其基部还应该有 9,220 英尺(约 2,810 米)被弯曲的地面所遮挡;但在现实中,该山峰“永远笔直耸立,从山脚到山顶全貌可见”。 Dan 拿出了严谨的几何与地理数据逐一拆解: 1. **真实可见高度**:安克雷奇到德纳利峰的直线距离为 129 英里。在这一距离上,地球曲率造成的视线隐蔽高度确实在 9,000 英尺左右。但是,地球半径约为 3,965 英里,德纳利峰高达 20,320 英尺,这意味着即便扣除被遮挡的部分,山体依然有至少 11,000 英尺(超过 3,300 米)完整耸立在水平面之上。 2. **倾斜角度微乎其微**:山峰所谓的“向后倾斜”,经球面几何换算仅为极其微小的 1.8 度。Dan 在三维软件 Blender 中构建了两个完全相同的金字塔模型作为对照实验,让其中一个向后倾斜 1.8 度,单凭肉眼观察几乎根本分不出两者的区别。 3. **地势与透视错觉**:从安克雷奇一侧看去,山脉群的山脚区域比主峰顶端足足近了 40 英里,且山脚本身的地面海拔就已经达到了 1,600 英尺。因此,根据几何遮挡比例,山体被地表曲率遮蔽的实际体量远比单纯看干瘪数字时脑补的要小得多。 4. **视觉谎言**:在安克雷奇其实根本看不见德纳利峰真正处于海平面高度的基底,人们之所以主观上觉得自己看到了“从山脚到山顶的全部”,纯粹是因为能看到露出的山体质量过于庞大所造成的视知觉误判。 - 德纳利峰观测数据:距安克雷奇 129 英里,峰顶海拔 20,320 英尺(约 6,194 米),地球半径约 3,965 英里。 - 曲率几何遮挡:隐蔽高度约 9,000 英尺,但山体仍有至少 11,000 英尺暴露在视线内。 - 几何倾斜值:由于地球曲率导致的后仰角仅为 1.8 度,在长焦透视下肉眼完全无法察觉。 - 地貌干扰:安克雷奇方向的山脉群基底距观测者近 40 英里,自身基底海拔已有 1,600 英尺,掩盖了真正的海平面基线。 ### [15:15](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JTfhYyTuT44&t=915s) 破解地平论的乐趣与日常科学中的偏见 观察远方高山时,观测者往往必须登上更高的海拔,才能越过身旁的建筑物、树木和丘陵等近处障碍物;而这种高度抬升本身,恰恰拉长了视线越过地球曲率的距离。以一张隔着安克雷奇(Anchorage)市中心远眺德纳利峰(Denali)的照片为例,照片视角显然越过了该市最高的建筑群,说明拍摄点至少位于 300 英尺的高空。Dan Olson 直言不讳地指出其核心事实:“底线在于,你能从极远的地方看到德纳利峰,纯粹是因为它实在太、太、太、太巨大了。”(“Bottom line is you can see Denali from very far away because it’s really, really, really, really big...”)随后他揭晓了之前提到的视错觉谜题:在那张著名的照片里,其实是右侧那座金字塔在向后倾斜。 ```mermaid flowchart LR accTitle: 视线跨越地表曲率的示意图 accDescr: 展示观测者通过提升海拔越过近处障碍物,从而在地表曲率上获得更远视距的过程。 subgraph 观测端["观测端条件"] A["提升观测点海拔<br/>(例如站在300英尺高处)"] B["越过近处障碍物<br/>(建筑、树木、山丘)"] end subgraph 视距延伸["视距物理效果"] C["视线越过地表曲率"] D["锁定超大体量远景<br/>(如德纳利峰)"] end A --> B B --> C C --> D ``` 这种推演过程给人带来的快乐,完全等同于解开一道精巧的数学谜题。同样的思维方式也适用于拆解各种地平论流言。例如,地平论者经常宣称“世上没有向南指的指南针”,这种荒谬论调反倒成了一个极佳的切入点,用来反思现代科学在地图绘制或工具设计中,是如何以细微却连贯的方式偏向北半球(Global North)的。从物理本质上讲,每一个指南针都是“向南指”的,因为磁针并非单向指示,而是把自己顺应在地球磁场的走向中,同时指示南北两极的磁极性;但人类习惯将其中一端涂红并规定它代表“北”。对于 Dan 来说,后备箱装满摄影器材开车奔向山区,坐在美丽的湖畔度过一个下午,既充满乐趣,又能向所有人展现大自然真实的奇观。 ### [17:03](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JTfhYyTuT44&t=1023s) 驳斥地平论的传统框架与荒诞现实 与地平论者打交道时,荒唐和喜感往往扑面而来。Dan 插入了一段地平论博主的经典言论片段:该博主情绪激动地宣称好莱坞所有关于太空的电影都在推销球体模型,痛斥“球体就是兽的印记”(“The globe, the image of the Beast.”),坚信日心说与科学毫无瓜葛,而是由神秘学者、耶稣会士和梵蒂冈捏造的阴谋;紧接着,这位博主煞有介事地指出科学界宣称地球以每小时 66,600 英里的速度绕日公转(暗示 666 这个魔鬼数字),但在谷歌上搜索却显示是每秒 18.5 英里,说到这里,视频里突然传来了咕嘟咕嘟抽水烟筒(bong)的声响,博主若无其事地丢下一句:“等等,我先抽一口。” 绝大多数反驳地平论(Flat Earth debunking)的内容,都停留在这种传统框架内: - 将地平论者的荒谬言论当作解谜游戏、地理探讨或光学小课堂的幽默引子。 - 借机向大众科普真实的光学、折射或曲率计算原理。 - 普遍默认地平论者荒唐可笑,且认清一个残酷现实:“归根结底,地平论者是根本无法被说服的。”(“...because, at the end of the day, Flat Earthers are not available to be persuaded.”) 随后镜头切回湖边徒步的现实环境,伴随着清脆的熊铃叮当声,Dan 严肃提醒大家,拍摄地处于极其危险的熊出没核心区域。正值秋季进食期的尾声,棕熊和黑熊急需囤积热量准备冬眠,而湖畔与峡谷周围正大面积生长着它们最爱饱食的野牛莓(bison berries),因此所有人必须携带防熊喷雾、摇响熊铃,时刻保持极高警惕。 ### [19:04](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JTfhYyTuT44&t=1144s) 揭开表象:地平论是一种融摄性圣经信仰 表面上看,地平论只是一种关于几何形状的执念——认为地球不是球体而是平的,而这个“真相”被一个隐秘而庞大的“他们”(Them)出于险恶莫测的目的对普通大众(Us)严加隐瞒。大多数对地平论的报道和科普到这里便浅尝辄止。然而,Dan 提出了一个颠覆性的论点:地球的形状本身,很可能是地平论体系中最无关紧要的一环。现代地平论的实质,是一种具有福音派色彩(evangelical)和末世论色彩(apocalyptic)的融摄性圣经信仰(syncretic Biblical belief)。 ```mermaid flowchart TD accTitle: 地平论的融摄性结构 accDescr: 展示地平论如何将古代文本、阴谋论和流行文化拼贴为一体。 subgraph 文本拼贴["融摄机制 (Syncretism)"] T1["古代残篇与圣经创世/末世段落"] T2["大众流行文化 (如杰克与魔豆、巨人传说)"] T3["经典阴谋论 (MK-Ultra、肯尼迪刺杀、外星人)"] end subgraph 核心诉求["地平论核心神学输出"] CORE["重构物理世界真相<br/>证明神圣鱼缸与上帝存在"] end T1 --> CORE T2 --> CORE T3 --> CORE ``` 所谓“融摄主义”(Syncretism),本质上是不管原始文献之间原本存在何种逻辑脉络,只要挑出各自合心意的片段,强行拼贴成一套全新的解释体系。比如只要两本书里都提到了“龙”或“大龙”,融摄主义者就会认定它们必然指向完全相同的实体,只要把所有零散故事凑在一起就能还原“龙的真相”。在当代地平论的拼贴框架里,不仅有《约柜》、《圣杯》和《魔戒》中的至尊魔戒,还汇集了天使、巨人、世界之树,以及 MK-Ultra 精神控制实验、肯尼迪遇刺案和外星人访客等现代阴谋论符号;甚至衍生出荒诞不经的“平地上没有森林”理论,坚称地表的方山断崖是远古硅基参天巨树被砍伐后留下的残桩。 这种信仰虽然生长于美国基督教的社会土壤和词汇传统中,但基督教正统教义在其中几乎被抽空或世俗化了。地平论者对基督耶稣的救赎并不热衷,耶稣在其中只是次要角色,他们真正痴迷的是圣经中关于世界创造与终结的章节。现代地平论将流行文化的古埃及学、诺斯底主义神秘体验和一种“深奥虚构主义”(esoteric fictionalism)揉杂在一起,坚信大众影视小说描绘的奇幻元素是被加密扭曲的真实历史(例如将《杰克与仙豆》中的通天藤蔓解释为通往泰坦巨人大陆的远古天柱)。 ### [23:42](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JTfhYyTuT44&t=1422s) 福音派狂热、末世论与内置的对立机制 地平论内部缺乏中央权威与统一经文,导致不同宣讲者的推论混乱且充满矛盾,但在这些杂音之下,始终贯穿着一条不可动摇的核心信条:“世界是平的,而‘他们’正在向你隐瞒这一事实,因为一个平坦的地球将成为无可辩驳的证据,证明我们生活在一个神圣的鱼缸里,从而证明上帝是真实存在的。”(“The world is flat and ‘they’ are hiding that fact from you because a Flat Earth would be irrefutable proof that we live in a divine fishbowl, and thus god is real.”) 这一论断赋予了地平论极度危险的传教动力与对抗性质: - **福音派属性(Evangelical)**:地平论者将意识形态上的“正统”视为灵魂得救的必要条件,相信存在绝对的宇宙神圣道德审判,每个人都要为自己信仰的正确性负责。因此信徒肩负着强制性的道德使命去同化尽可能多的人。在这个前提下,任何试图用科学反驳地平论的人,在信徒眼里都不再只是单纯探讨自然规律,而是在公然阻碍“上帝存在的铁证”,充当魔鬼的帮凶。 - **末世论属性(Apocalyptic)**:他们深信世界末日即将来临,且时间永远被设定为“很快”。虽然充斥着流行文化渲染的末日景象,但他们往往直接略过繁琐细节,直接跳到最终高潮——上帝亲自降临、终结世界,并证明地平论者自始至终都是对的。Dan 强调,如果一个人坚信在一两代人之内,上帝就会像把玩完的棋盘收回盒子里一样亲自收拾整个人类,那么这种心态对制定长期规划、社会公共政策以及政治投票选择所造成的破坏性影响,无论怎么强调都不为过。 - **内置的对抗机制(Baked-in Opposition)**:这是偏执阴谋论思维自带的免疫系统。在他们眼中,对立面的“他们”绝不是理念不同或动机有别的普通同类,而是纯粹的、处心积虑的恶意化身。任何反驳声音或不同意见,都被自动化约成敌人为了蓄意扼杀真理而精心制造的谎言,从而使整个信仰体系对一切外部理性证据彻底免疫。 针对这一社会心理层面的闭环,Dan 指出,他的同行好友 H.bomberguy 与 Philosophy Tube 都曾制作过探讨地平论的优秀视频,将地平论作为切入哲学、科学社会学及修辞学的跳板。Philosophy Tube 指出科学讨论在本质上也是一种受社会语境支配的修辞实践,而地平论者只是无法被常规修辞所打动;H.bomberguy 则在视频中极尽耐心地给予地平论者充分的善意与理解。然而,Dan 认为他们的剖析固然精彩,却依然不够完整,并未触及现代地平论真正顽固且充满神学进攻性的核心内核。 ### [27:16](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JTfhYyTuT44&t=1636s) 地平论者的真实意图与政治议程 在探讨地平论时,人们往往倾向于小心翼翼地将“地球是平的”这一具体信仰剥离出来,仅仅去应对那些因物理世界本体论而产生的狭隘焦虑。创作者丹·奥尔森(Dan Olson)指出,这种做法虽然出于好意,但可能放错了重点。他说道:“你觉得有什么地方不对劲是对的,因为确实有不对劲的地方,只是也许该继续寻找那个源头,因为……地球并不是平的。” 从表面上看,地平论者与普通人有着许多相同的焦虑:他们担心对我们生活有着巨大影响的权力结构,担心塑造我们获取信息渠道的系统,也担心社会赖以运转的共同虚构产物(比如货币和租金)。然而,人们往往过度倾向于将他们视为无害的怪人,仿佛我们可以从他们对世界的共同挫败感出发,轻轻地将他们引导到更理性的方向。这种共同的焦虑其实只是一个非常表面的交点。虽然大家都在担心和怀疑掌权者的所作所为,但地平论者对于“谁在掌权”以及“他们想用权力做什么”有着截然不同的看法。地平论者并不是在其他方面一片空白、唯独相信一件怪事的空壳,他们相信地平论是因为这符合他们的政治议程。 - **简化现实的终极目标**:阴谋论信仰的终极目的是通过将高度混乱的世界状态归咎于单一的活跃敌对力量(或群体),并用同样单一的解决方案来对抗它,从而简化复杂的现实。 - **对科学与进步的敌意**:他们的焦虑源于世界变得过于复杂、变化太快,因此他们将科学和进步主义视为积极的恶意元素,认为这些元素在主动阻碍上帝的真实本质。 ```mermaid flowchart TD accTitle: 地平论信仰的形成与政治逻辑 accDescr: 展示地平论者如何通过将社会焦虑转化为对特定群体的敌意,从而达到简化现实和去解释化科学的目的。 A["社会焦虑 (权力结构、信息控制)"] --> B["简化现实的需求"] B --> C["将混乱归咎于单一敌对力量 ('他们')"] C --> D["地平论信仰 (选择性否定权力结构)"] D --> E["去解释化科学 (将日心说等同于邪恶)"] ``` --- ### [28:44](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JTfhYyTuT44&t=1724s) 简化现实与“去解释化”的科学 大多数人相信地平论,并不是因为被粗劣的证据所说服,也不是因为发现有关物理世界性质的其他证据缺乏说服力。他们之所以相信,是因为地平论契合了他们对社会世界既有的看法。地平论是人们主动想要去相信的东西,因为如果它是真的,那将成为他们所相信的一切其他事物的无可辩驳的铁证。 地平论是一个选择性地剥夺现有权力结构合法性的系统,而且它是倒推出来的。地平论坚称,你正受到“他们”(通常指同性恋者、自由主义者或犹太人)的欺骗,目的是为了掩盖上帝的存在。因此,这些掌权者不仅是他们孤立主义、排外政策的对手,更是正义本身的敌人。正如一位地平论者在视频中所说:“灌输是他们运行这个世界的方式,是他们维持谎言的方式,也是他们将谎言作为科学传递下去的方式,而这不过是一种信仰。他们有一个建立在谎言之上的偏见基础,现在他们知道自己陷进去了。” 另一位地平论者则宣称:“日心说不过是伪装成科学的现代太阳崇拜。” 地平论者并不是在试图解释世界,而是在试图“去解释”(un-explain)世界。因为那些真实的、科学的解释,已经对他们的政治立场构成了不便。尽管大家对“世界出了问题”有着共同的感受,但地平论者给出的诊断和药方却完全不同。我们无法将地平论与其所处的反动潮流割裂开来。 --- ### [30:33](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JTfhYyTuT44&t=1833s) 低信任度媒体环境与反动潮流 在 2020 年这个特殊的年份里,丹坦言自己对那些表演性地拒绝同理心和证据的人失去了耐心。一个典型的例子就是地平论者对佩戴新冠(COVID-19)口罩的态度。一位地平论者在视频中嘲讽道:“在这个阶段还自愿戴口罩的人都是无脑的傀儡……如果他们的生命取决于此,他们也无法独立思考。” 更深层次、更关键的问题在于孕育了地平论等新信仰运动的信息环境。我们目前处于一个极度低信任度的媒体环境中,这是数十年来主动破坏的产物,同时也伴随着企业化、资本主义的环境——这种环境要么优先考虑富人的利益,要么盲目追求以数据指标为驱动的“参与度”(engagement)成功模式。人们有大量合理的理由去不信任媒体,认为它们在面对虚假信息时充其量是毫无骨气的,甚至直接是同谋和获利者。这种合理焦虑的普遍存在,为地平论等兜售简单“我们 vs 他们”宇宙模型的群体创造了理想的温床。 --- ### [32:00](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JTfhYyTuT44&t=1920s) 湖泊实验与“祈祷曲线消失”的荒诞遭遇 丹分享了自己最近的一次亲身经历。几天前,他在追踪地平论相关资料时,无意中进入了一个地平论者的直播间。当时直播间里正在播放地平论大会视频的重播。丹犯了个“错误”,在聊天室里发言了。他并没有以一种挑衅或充满攻击性的不信者姿态出现,而是非常温和地分享了自己几周前在明尼万卡湖(Lake Minnewanka)做的实验。 丹在聊天室里说,自己去了一个非常大的湖泊,复制了地平论者声称可以自己动手做的测试,结果发现远处的船只和对岸都消失在地球曲线之后了。聊天室里的地平论者立刻开始找借口,说那一定是“巨大的水波或波浪”阻挡了视线。丹解释说,那是一个长形湖,但并不是一个风浪巨大的开阔湖泊,当时水面非常平静,根本没有波浪。对方又说,船只不够大,可能会隐藏在自己激起的尾迹里。丹反驳道,那是一艘约 4 米高的游船。随后双方进行了一连串的拉锯,对方提出的所有质疑,其实都是丹在实验中已经控制并预料到的变量。 最终,聊天室里的一位地平论者无言以对,只能生硬地表示:“好吧……你一定是做错了,你做错了某些事,为此祈祷然后重新做一遍吧。” 丹对此感到无比荒诞,他在视频中吐槽道:“你刚刚居然叫我用祈祷让地球曲线消失。” --- ### [34:36](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JTfhYyTuT44&t=2076s) 算法的推波助澜与地平论的衰退 那么,地平论究竟是如何流行起来的呢?毕竟市面上有着无数的阴谋论和世界观,无论是真实的还是骗局,都在使用“你被骗了”这套说辞。为什么偏偏是地平论? 现代地平论在很大程度上是由内容推荐算法创造出来的。这些算法为了最大化用户的留存率和参与度,会不断向用户推荐与其观看内容相似、但浓度更高、更极端的渐进版本。兜售各种奇谈怪论的怪人在人类历史上一直存在,他们进入 YouTube 是必然的,但算法确保了他们能够精准找到受众。这些系统在无意中识别出了那些容易接受阴谋论和反动思维的人,并将他们推向越来越深的地平论传教深渊。此外,这也占了时机的便宜:恰好有一批怪人在 YouTube 算法最青睐此类内容的时候,产出了大量低成本的内容,一旦获得关注,系统就会不断强化这种成功。 不过,我们也需要保持客观。尽管地平论在公众舆论中吸引了大量眼球,但它仍然是一个非常微小的运动: - **订阅量瓶颈**:地平论领域最大的频道订阅量也仅在 15 万左右,大多数频道远低于这个数字。在订阅成本极低的 YouTube 平台上,这个体量微不足道。 - **播放量暴跌**:过去几年里,这些频道新发的支持地平论的视频,播放量大多只能勉强达到几千次。 - **代表人物的过气**:被公认为在 YouTube 时代推广地平论的功臣马克·萨金特(Mark Sargent),其早期作品《地平线索》(Flat Earth Clues)拥有 110 万次播放。但自 2018 年初以来,他只有两支视频的播放量突破了六位数:一支是盗版搬运网红夏恩·道森(Shane Dawson)的地平论视频,另一支是在抱怨电影《星球大战:最后的绝地武士》(The Last Jedi)。 虽然 YouTube 在 2019 年初调整了算法以优先推荐可信来源,从而降低了地平论视频的权重,但当时地平论其实已经处于下坡路。更具影响力的是,无论是辟谣还是仅仅作为奇闻剖析,主流渠道讨论地平论的视频(播放量动辄数百万)要比地平论者自己的传教视频受欢迎得多。地平论在过去几年中一直在缓慢流失支持者,因为他们找到了新的归宿——QAnon。 --- ### [37:39](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JTfhYyTuT44&t=2259s) QAnon:法西斯主义的末日邪教 丹对 QAnon 进行了定义:“QAnon 是一个法西斯主义的、圣经式的、秘传的末日邪教,他们相信一个仅被称为 Q 的匿名政府特工正在向‘爱国者’泄露敏感的‘超绝密’信息……” 根据该邪教的教义,唐纳德·J·特朗普(Donald J. Trump)的政治和文化对手——即所谓的“深层政府”(Deep State)和“好莱坞精英”——都是“阴谋集团”(The Cabal)的爪牙。他们宣称这些精英是崇拜撒旦的恋童癖者,绑架、贩卖、虐待并恐吓儿童,以获取并收割“肾上腺素红”(adrenochrome,一种人体处理肾上腺素时产生的副产品),并在崇拜撒旦的仪式中以此来达到致幻快感。 这种被塑造得如同卡通片般邪恶的敌人,为他们剥夺基本人权提供了借口。他们企图通过一场被称为“风暴”(The Storm)的大规模威权主义清洗,将反对特朗普的行为定为犯罪,从而迎来一个被称为“大觉醒”(The Great Awakening)的和平与繁荣的黄金时代。 在视频展示的一段素材中,一位 QAnon 信徒满怀期待地宣称:“Q 已经透露,许多高级官员很快就会被捕,这实际上将是我们一直渴望发生的‘排干沼泽’(Drain The Swamp)的情景。他说,一旦腐败以及腐败的类型向美国人民揭露,将会触发他称之为‘觉醒’的时刻。他说这会像是一个事件,是我们在美国历史上从未见证过的事情。但这将促使美国人团结在特朗普总统和他的政府周围,以便彻底清理门户。大家听着,如果那真的发生,我们会无比幸福。” ### [39:32](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JTfhYyTuT44&t=2372s) 末日邪教、披萨门与“绞刑之日” 在探讨 QAnon(匿名者 Q)的狂热时,其信徒表现出一种令人不寒而栗的期待。许多信徒沉溺于类似“披萨门”(Pizzagate)的共生阴谋论中,深信存在隐藏在披萨店地下的恋童癖性奴地牢;这种偏执甚至发展到了将披萨这种国民快餐的任何图像都看作庞大阴谋暗号的地步。信徒们在视频中神经质地搜寻蛛丝马迹,指着某人背后的图案大呼小叫,认定那是瞬间浮现的隐秘符号。 Dan Olson 指出,地平说(Flat Earth)信徒如果说只是对“世界末日”感到焦虑和期盼,那么 QAnon 则是不折不扣的末日邪教。不同之处在于,QAnon 构想的末日并不是天降神罚式的宗教神启,而是高度世俗化、政治化的残酷清洗——其核心是“大逮捕”以及在许多狂想版本中公开进行的大处决。Dan Olson 直言不讳地指出,这套狂热实质上只是新纳粹思想的翻版:“这大多不过是对 1978 年新纳粹小说《特纳日记》(The Turner Diaries)中‘绞刑之日’(Day of the Rope)的重新混剪。有时它甚至就是字面意义上的‘绞刑之日’,因为他们骨子里就是法西斯分子。” 引用油管频道 Thought Slime 对《特纳日记》的精辟概述,该小说从 2099 年未来激进分子的视角,记录了 90 年代初一名叫 Earl Turner 的革命恐怖分子的日记,被广泛视为“在诸多方面堪称有史以来最恶毒、充满仇恨的书籍”。 - **世俗末日幻想**:QAnon 将传统的末日审判替换为政变式的公开审判、军事法庭与大规模公开处决。 - **意识形态同源**:其清洗精英阶层的设想与白人至上主义小说《特纳日记》中的种族清洗狂热“绞刑之日”高度重合。 --- ### [40:50](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JTfhYyTuT44&t=2450s) 品牌化传播、WWG1WGA 与对“拯救儿童”的绑架 虽然 QAnon 带有浓重的美国本土政治色彩,极度依附于唐纳德·特朗普(Donald Trump)的总统任期,但它却在全球各地的极右翼和威权主义运动中迅速生根发芽。Dan Olson 强调,这在很大程度上要归功于它极为成功的“品牌化”(Branding)运作,这种高度凝练的符号化特征让世界各地的群体极易将其本土化和移植。 如同地平说一样,QAnon 具有极强的传教狂热倾向,信徒会强行向身边的每一个人兜售理论。除了显眼的“Q”或“QAnon”标识外,更隐蔽的集结号是他们的标志性口号“WWG1WGA”(Where We Go One We Go All,意为“一人前行,众人相随”),这句口号实际上直接挪用自 1996 年雷德利·斯科特执导的灾难冒险电影《怒海骄阳》(White Squall)。 更为险恶的是,QAnon 开始大规模渗透并侵占原本用于呼吁反对虐待儿童的通用公共标签 `#SaveTheChildren`(拯救儿童)。他们借由这个极具道德号召力的标签组织线下集会,吸引不知情的普通大众参与。正如媒体评论指出的那样,这种宣传手段具有极强的迷惑性: > “这里的潜台词极其阴险:‘我是为了保护孩子,如果你不站出来,就说明你不如我爱孩子。’……他不会一上来就兜售‘披萨门’,也不会一上来就抛出 QAnon;他以‘拯救儿童’为切入点,随后才将披萨门的那套东西暗中塞了进去。” 通过将现实中真实存在的虐童案例作为跳板,信徒顺理成章地将公众引入他们编造的精英吸血、虐待儿童等全套荒诞神话中。 --- ### [42:32](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JTfhYyTuT44&t=2552s) “大帐篷阴谋论”与事实核查的“反向过滤器” 从 2017 年在 4chan 上以匿名“Q 投递”(Q drops)的形式发端,到后来迁移到 8chan 改版后的 8kun,QAnon 如今已经演变成为依靠社交媒体自给自足的怪物。它成为各种古怪阴谋论、反科学思潮、伪科学节食法以及割韭菜骗子的庇护所,构成了一个所谓的“大帐篷阴谋论”(Big Tent Conspiracy)——因为任何阴谋论都能被硬塞进这个框架中。 荷兰创作者珍妮特·奥瑟巴德(Janet Ossebaard)长达两个半小时的油管系列片《阴谋集团的倒台》(Fall of the Cabal),在形式和功能上扮演了类似当年“9/11 真相运动”宣传片《脆弱的转变》(Loose Change)的角色。该片将移民大篷车、割包皮黑色产业、奥巴马获诺贝尔奖等八竿子打不着的仇恨与种族主义阴谋论杂糅在一起,宣称其根源全是 Q 所揭示的“深层政府阴谋集团”。甚至原本反建制的 9/11 阴谋论也被它强行重构以适应狂热立场:传统的 9/11 阴谋论指责布什政府制造灾难是为了通过《爱国者法案》、建立国土安全部并打响战争;而 Q 框架下,国土安全部(DHS)被视为对特朗普绝对忠诚的机构,《爱国者法案》变成了特朗普摧毁深层政府的武器,因此 9/11 的叙事被强行扭曲为“布什为了掩盖深层政府的活动而用导弹精确打击了五角大楼”。Dan Olson 评价道: > “这一切都毫无逻辑可言,千万不要试图通过事实的棱镜去理解它,这全关乎忠诚站队。” 这类阴谋论视频还发展出了一种针对理性的“反向过滤器”机制。当一个习惯于科学分析、批判性思考和事实核查的人观看《阴谋集团的倒台》时,往往撑不过几分钟就会被其密集而荒谬的断言噎住。片中罗列的各种所谓“未解之谜”,在现实科学中都有极为合理的解释: - **野火只烧房屋不烧树木**:Dan Olson 解释,极高温度且移动极快的火风暴确实会迅速掠过并烧毁半栋房屋,而未将周围含水分的活树完全引燃。 - **汽车被爆炸气流掀翻砸碎**:这纯粹是汽车油箱内部汽油被引燃发生物理爆炸的正常力学结果。 - **树木从内部向外燃烧**:当树木枯死、树皮破损或遭真菌侵蚀时,其干燥脆弱的木质内部暴露在外,比外部保护性树皮更易燃,火焰钻入空洞自然会从内向外燃烧。 这种本应令人赞叹的自然科学现象,在阴谋论者口中却被剥夺了解释权,变成了故弄玄虚的“让人陷入沉思的疑点”。 ```mermaid flowchart TD accTitle: 阴谋论受众过滤器机制 accDescr: 展示事实核查者与缺乏批判思考的受众在面对阴谋论内容时的不同走向与结果。 subgraph Input["接触阴谋论内容"] A["高密度虚假信息<br/>(如《阴谋集团的倒台》)"] end subgraph Filter["认知过滤机制"] B{"受众是否具备<br/>事实核查与批判思维?"} C["频繁停顿、查证事实<br/>发现常识性科学漏洞"] D["放弃理性求证<br/>接受情绪煽动与叙事"] end subgraph Result["分流结果"] E["被荒谬言论劝退<br/>(脱离传播链条)"] F["纳入大帐篷阴谋论<br/>(强化忠诚与受害者心理)"] end A --> B B -->|"是"| C B -->|"否"| D C --> E D --> F ``` --- ### [47:14](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JTfhYyTuT44&t=2834s) 幕后操盘手迷局与现实生活中的暴力悲剧 由于 QAnon 处于不断演变的新闻动态中,任何全面的概括都可能在视频上线时过时。关于匿名发布“Q drops”的幕后黑手,公众至今没有百分之百确凿的结论: - 有证据指向“爱国者肥皂箱”(Patriot's Soapbox)的创始人科尔曼·罗杰斯(Coleman Rogers),他是将“解码 Q 密文”推广为网络社交游戏的关键人物。2018 年 NBC 新闻的深度调查指出,罗杰斯曾在直播过程中疑似不慎使用 Q 账号登录 8chan,并且能预先知晓某些未被 Q 账号标记的“真实”帖子。然而许多早期的数字证据因归档不善而已被删除。 - 另有极具说服力的论点认为 Q 账号至少彻底易手过一次。许多研究者相信 8chan 的所有者吉姆·沃特金斯(Jim Watkins),或是与沃特金斯关系极度亲密的人,自 2019 年 11 月 8chan 重新以“8kun”之名上线起便接管了该账号。虽然这次改版造成的历史断裂使得身份核实极其困难,但 Dan Olson 强调追查具体皮套人并没有那么重要:罗杰斯与沃特金斯即便不是实际执笔者,也是这场运动的公开合作者与推动者,并借此攫取了金钱与巨大的话语权。 撇开幕后推手的身份,最危险的是这套哲学信念在现实世界中所激发的致命后果。QAnon 吸收了大量本就处于情感崩溃边缘、正陷入抚养权争夺的失常父母。许多人在生活中遭遇挫折后沉溺其中,整日满口阴谋论,甚至迷信反疫苗或“喝漂白水治病”的极端疗法,给孩子灌食漂白剂或强加全肉饮食。一旦伴侣、亲属或儿童保护服务机构(CPS)出面干预,这些深陷妄想的父母不仅不会反省,反而坚信自己是因为“知道得太多”而遭到了“深层政府”与“阴谋集团”的定点清除与迫害;保护机构的介入反倒成了证明其阴谋论完全正确的“确凿证据”。 这种偏执酿成了极其血腥的现实惨剧。2020 年 6 月 11 日,一名叫阿尔帕卢斯·斯莱曼(Alpalus Slyman)的男子在精神彻底崩溃的状态下试图绑架自己的五个孩子,在公路上以高达每小时 110 英里的极速与警方展开亡命飞车追逐。斯莱曼在 Facebook 上直播了这场追逐战的部分过程。在刺耳的警笛声与绝望的狂乱中,他对着镜头歇斯底里地哀求:“唐纳德·特朗普,我需要一个奇迹,或者随便什么人,匿名者 Q,救救我!”而背景音中传来的只有同车女性痛苦绝望的尖叫:“根本没人会来救你!” ### [50:53](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JTfhYyTuT44&t=3053s) QAnon的暴力激化与现实危机 QAnon 并不只是停留在网络讨论板上的无害消遣,它在现实世界中催生了极其危险的武装行动与政治激进化。2020 年 7 月 2 日,加拿大游骑兵成员科里·赫伦(Corey Hurren)驾驶皮卡直接撞毁了渥太华萨塞克斯路 1 号(1 Sussex Drive)的大门——这里是加拿大总督的府邸,当时也是总理贾斯汀·特鲁多(Justin Trudeau)的临时住所。赫伦手持手枪和步枪在庄园内游荡,随后被加拿大皇家骑警(RCMP)逮捕。在此之前,他曾给部队上级寄去信件,声称自己的动机是阻止特鲁多将加拿大变成“共产主义独裁国家”。赫伦的 Instagram 账号在案发前的数月里充斥着大量的 QAnon 与各类阴谋论迷因(memes),其中包括一张带有“白兔”形象的图片,配文直截了当地询问是否有人跟随 Q 顺着兔子洞探究其与新冠病毒的关联,并附带了一长串包含 `#Adrenochrome`、`#FrazzleDrip`、`#Pizzagate`、`#WWG1WGA` 以及 `#TheStormIsUponUs` 等极端阴谋论标签。 这绝非孤立事件。早在 2018 年 6 月,QAnon 信徒马修·赖特(Matthew Wright)就曾驾驶一辆装甲防弹车堵截了胡佛水坝大桥超过一个小时,要求当局公开发布所谓的“监察长办公室报告”(OIG report)。在 QAnon 信奉者的幻想中,这份文件藏有特朗普政府针对阴谋集团(Cabal)成员所发起数千份秘密起诉书的证据。而当记者在白宫简报会上向唐纳德·特朗普询问,在疫情期间势头愈发强劲的 QAnon 运动以及他对这些追随者的看法时,特朗普不仅没有谴责,反而给予了心照不宣的迎合:“Well, I don't know much about the movement other than I understand they like me very much. These are people that don't like seeing what's going on in places like Portland and places like Chicago and New York and other cities and states and, uh, I've heard these are people that love our country and they just don't like seeing it...” 丹·奥尔森(Dan Olson)一针见血地指出,这类邪教式组织所带来的最大危害就在于其激化机制:“This is the radicalizing effect of cults like Q: it attracts and enables people with personalities that are already inclined towards these kinds of actions, and gives them a reason to take it further.” - 2020 年 7 月 2 日:Corey Hurren 携枪闯入加拿大总督府邸(特鲁多暂住地),意图阻止所谓的“共产主义独裁”。 - 2018 年 6 月:Matthew Wright 携装甲车封锁胡佛水坝大桥,强行索要所谓的司法部 OIG 报告。 - 特朗普对此类现象公开回应表示不甚了解,但强调“他们非常喜欢我”并且“热爱我们的国家”。 --- ### [53:13](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JTfhYyTuT44&t=3193s) 肥皂剧式的信息流动与“Q Drops”的解码游戏 地平说信徒之所以能够轻而易举地接受破绽百出、自相矛盾的碎片化观点,是因为他们真正在意的是意识形态的“大方向”与宏大轮廓,至于细节如何填充根本无足轻重。这一点在 QAnon 身上表现得尤为明显。阴谋论内部那些填补空隙的具体桥段更像是一种维持受众参与度的消遣娱乐,很少能长期保留下来成为教义的基石。例如,“阴谋集团正在收割儿童体内的肾上腺素红(Adrenochrome)”这一概念早在 2017 年底就在边缘网络圈子流传,但直到 2020 年才突然爆发;类似地,喝漂白水或服用羟氯喹来治疗新冠的说法在群体里流行数月后,哪怕随时被抛弃,信徒们也不会觉得前后有任何矛盾。 Q 宇宙的设定高度不稳定且极其流动,而这种不可预测的即时性反而像连续剧或另类实境游戏(ARG)一样,吸引着信徒每天打卡报到,跟进所谓的最新剧情,并集体参与破译“Q 投喂”(Q drops)——即该信仰的核心文本。这些通过图像讨论板(如 4chan、8chan/8kun)发布的数千条匿名信息被特意撰写得含糊其辞,充满了各种暗号与毫无逻辑的胡言乱语,其目的正是留给追随者通过群体讨论来达成“共识”。例如在 2017 年 11 月 12 日的第 142 号 Q 投喂中,充斥着一连串跳跃的问句: > “How did Soros replace family ‘y’? Who is family ‘y’? Trace the bloodlines of these (3) families. What happened during WWII? Was Hitler a puppet? Who was his handler? What was the purpose? What was the real purpose of the war? **政治投机分子(Policy hacks)**:将这一群体视作可被操控的选民工具,试图借此巩固自身基本盘或打击政敌; - **自媒体与权威评论员(Pundits)**:靠收割 Q 社区的庞大流量为自己谋利; - **周边倒买倒卖商(Dropshippers)**:兜售各类印有 Q 标语的服饰与商品大发横财; - **全职解码播客主(Decoders)**:在 YouTube 等平台靠着逐条“解析”Q Drops 建立起自己的变现事业。 当然,并非所有参与者都是无可救药的狂热分子或恶意诈骗犯。很多人最初只是被阴谋论的刺激感和娱乐性所吸引。把错综复杂的现实世界想象成一部情节紧凑的电视连续剧无疑是令人愉悦的;人们渴望拥有一个全知叙述者的视角来俯瞰世界,并在混乱动荡的时代里寻求一种脆弱的心灵安全感。 ### [01:01:29](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JTfhYyTuT44&t=3689s) 激进化漏斗与将事实工具化 许多浅尝辄止的探究者只是抱着好玩的心态接触阴谋论,随后便因遇到难以忍受的狂热信徒、网站服务器宕机等小故障,或是单纯被一款新发售的电子游戏分散注意力而退出。然而,这本质上是一条激进化管道(radicalization pipeline),大量人群一旦接触到令人反感的内容后并不会选择抽身。人们往往带着对现实世界泛化的不安和未被明确定义的焦虑进入这个领域,而 QAnon 恰好带着海量答案迎面而来——这些答案虽然怪诞、自相矛盾,但数量极其庞大、输出频率极高且语气无比自信,因而极具说服力。例如信徒会将唐纳德·特朗普推文中的错别字“covfefe”解读为指向总统社交媒体存档法案的高深密语。 ```mermaid flowchart TD accTitle: QAnon 激进化演变链路 accDescr: 展示个体从现实焦虑逐步演变成加速主义极端分子的心理异化路径。 subgraph Phase1["初期阶段"] A["现实焦虑与不安"] --> B["接触 QAnon 海量密集解读"] end subgraph Phase2["内化与重塑"] B --> C["沉迷解码与重构既有叙事"] C --> D["事实退化为服务于结局的拼图"] end subgraph Phase3["极端异化"] D --> E["锁定固定终局:大风暴与大觉醒"] E --> F["结果落空引发挫败感"] F --> G["转向加速主义:强行促成终局"] end ``` 随着信徒越陷越深,他们会花费大量时间去解码信息或观看他人解读,从而习惯于将各类支离破碎的信息强行整合与综合。在 QAnon 内部,这一过程主要表现为不断重排和改写既有且不断演化的设定,以确保他们渴望的结局始终成立;最终,这一结局成为信徒生命中唯一保持不变的固定支点。Dan Olson 犀利地指出:“QAnon 训练人们将事实视为结果的附庸,事实不过是用来为行动辩护而随意重排的游戏筹码。”在这种机制下,一个人最初可能只是对民选官员与健康保险公司之间的金钱往来怀有合情合理的警惕,最终却演变成笃信 5G 网络传播冠状病毒,并坚信唯一的解决途径是对“黑人的命也是命”(Black Lives Matter)抗议者实施法西斯式镇压,以及与中国开战。 - 激进化通道的驱动力并非逻辑自洽,而是海量、高频且绝对自信的信息轰炸。 - 信徒的生活重心逐渐完全锚定在两大预言终局上:“大风暴”(The Storm)与“大觉醒”(The Great Awakening)。 - 一切客观事实都失去了独立价值,沦为随时可被改写、拼接以维系既定剧本的道具。 --- ### [01:03:34](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JTfhYyTuT44&t=3814s) 幻灭、“强行促成终局”与加速主义危机 越来越多的人离开 QAnon,并不是因为他们找回了理性,而是因为他们对迟迟看不到实质成果感到极度沮丧,转而直接投身于硬核加速主义(accelerationist)组织。这构成了极大的现实威胁,因为这种挫败感正是末日邪教中所谓“强行促成终局”(forcing the end)的前兆。所谓“强行促成终局”,是指末日狂热信徒眼见预言的末日迟迟未降临,转而形成一种新的信条:必须由他们亲手创造条件,促使末日发生;而这些人为制造的条件,几乎无一例外指向死亡、瘟疫、生态崩溃以及剧烈的社会动荡。 长期浸淫在这种思维模式中的信徒深信,必定有一场早已预言的清算之日,且这一天与某个特定政治人物掌握政权直接绑定。面对预期落空,他们一次又一次被告知要压抑失望情绪并“相信计划”(trust the plan)。然而,信徒很容易由此跨出致命的一步:他们开始认为所谓的“大计划”,从一开始就是 Q 在训练他们成为“大风暴”的执行工具,现在必须由他们亲自接管局势。在信徒社群流传的言论中,甚至有传教者宣称上帝向其显现:若政府不在既定窗口期内公开实施高规格大逮捕,爱国者们就将忍无可忍,像在摩加迪沙或班加西那样走向极端,“他们会把尸体拖过街道,冲进那些政客的住宅或办公室将他们拖出来”。 - 幻灭感催生的不是悔悟,而是极端的加速主义倾向与暴力冲动。 - “强行促成终局”将末日预言从被动等待转变为主动破坏现实社会秩序。 - 盲目服从“相信计划”的说辞极易倒逼信徒产生极端自我赋权,自命为神圣暴力的执行工具。 --- ### [01:05:58](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JTfhYyTuT44&t=3958s) 还原性威权主义与消解复杂的狂想 对于外部观察者而言,试图解释或理解 QAnon 往往令人无比抓狂,因为其话语体系中充斥着太多的噪音与混乱,人们很容易被诸如肾上腺素红(adrenochrome)、撒旦密谋集团(Cabal)或各城市耸立着“摩洛克(Moloch)雕像”等耸人听闻的荒诞概念所吸引。然而,如果剥离掉这些外在表象,其核心诉求其实高度统一。Dan Olson 总结道:“如果想穿透这些噪音,核心就在于:其统一的主题是对某种复辟性威权主义的渴望,期盼一个强人降临,以强力手段将一切重新放回‘原本属于它的位置’。”其余的一切,都不过是点缀的外观审美而已。 ```mermaid flowchart LR accTitle: 结构性现实与阴谋论简化对比 accDescr: 对比现实世界的复杂系统运作与 QAnon 将所有矛盾归咎于单一邪恶实体的简化模型。 subgraph Reality["真实世界运作机制"] R1["数以千计的政治实体"] R2["交错的利益、冲突与历史惯性"] R3["无预设蓝图的结构性复杂系统"] R1 --- R2 --- R3 end subgraph QAnonMindset["QAnon 简化模型"] Q1["单一密谋集团"] Q2["白纸黑字的明确邪恶纲领"] Q3["强人介入暴力重置秩序"] Q1 --> Q2 --> Q3 end ``` 正如地平论一样,这种狂热背后潜藏着一层可悲的心理共鸣——人们深感世界变得过于庞杂、一切正在失控。但 QAnon 对这一问题的诊断,却是将所有过错归咎于那些试图揭示世界复杂性的人。QAnon 与地平论这套宇宙观的本质目的,在于用最粗暴的方式简化世界。现实的政治版图本由成千上万个拥有各自目标、价值观和利益诉求的政治实体组成,在争夺权力与有限资源的博弈中演化出无尽的冲突与结盟;而 QAnon 却将这庞杂的现实打包成一个单一实体,宣称世间所有的混乱与苦难不是因为意识形态分歧、制度缺陷或历史惯性,而全都是某一个拥有明确黑纸白字纲领的具体团伙所造成的罪恶。 - 剥离猎奇叙事后,QAnon 的精神实质是对强人统治与威权复辟的狂热渴望。 - 这种思维拒绝承认历史惯性与系统复杂性,将一切社会运行困境拟人化为一个具体反派。 - 阴谋论宇宙观的受众通过将系统矛盾矮化为道德正邪对立,换取虚假的心理确定感。 --- ### [01:08:07](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JTfhYyTuT44&t=4087s) 拒斥系统性批评与敌视现实的心理危机 这类阴谋论信仰虽然构建了繁琐的设定,但其本质是站在结构性批判的对立面,许多信徒加入其中正是出于对结构性批判的极度排斥。结构性批判主张人类社会的现状是由代代交叠演化的复杂力量共同塑造的,既不存在先验蓝图,也没有宿命终局,世界不会自动变好,人类必须主动清算历史、修补当下并规划未来。然而 QAnon 以及许多抱持类似心态的人,执拗地相信万事万物皆由幕后黑手蓄意安排,世界本应存在一种不言自明的“自然秩序”,人们只要盲目顺从所谓的大计划即可。 面对气候变化、性少数与女性权益、种族正义、反警暴抗议,以及对贫富差距和公共资源私有化的反抗,这些跨越数十亿人命运的复杂系统性议题,QAnon 感受到的并不是背后的深层不公,而是现有生活秩序被打破所引发的剧烈恐慌。他们产生了一种荒诞的巫术思维(magical thought):认为正是因为有人天天公开谈论警察暴力,警察暴力才真正存在;对现状的挑战被等同于对“自然秩序”的亵渎。因此他们唯一的愿望就是出现一个铁腕角色,让所有抗议者闭嘴并滚出视线。Dan Olson 剖析了这种反动心理的死结: > “所有反动运动都处在与现实的紧张对抗中,这种对抗最终会导致心理危机,而像 QAnon 这样的信仰体系正是这场危机的终点——在这个节点上,现实本身成了敌人。” 当严酷事实(例如工业革命两百年向大气排放二氧化碳造成的气候危机)无法被忽视时,信徒便陷入与客观现实的全面决裂。因为这场争端的根源从来不是事实真相,而是权力归属;他们不是等待启蒙的无知容器,他们有着明确的政治诉求,QAnon 吸收和坚信什么,完全取决于这些信念能否为其渴望的威权权力结果背书。 - 信徒运用巫术思维将社会议题的揭露误认为是混乱产生的根源,妄图通过消灭异见来掩盖现实矛盾。 - QAnon 代表了反动思潮在事实面前破产后的终极异化:直接将客观现实本身树立为敌人。 - 信徒的所有认知筛选均受其政治诉求驱动,凡是能证明其权力合法性并击溃对手的荒诞说辞都会被全盘接受。 ### [01:11:59](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JTfhYyTuT44&t=4319s) 凌驾于现实之上的意志:地平说的终极隐喻 视频在此处引述了一位正在参选佐治亚州第 14 国会选区候选人(即 Marjorie Taylor Greene)的公开表态:“I think he's the greatest president that we'll have in our lifetimes, and I'm grateful for all he's doing, and I'm proudly running for congress in Georgia's 14th district.”(我认为他是我们有生之年能见到的最伟大的总统,我对他所做的一切心怀感激,我也非常自豪地在佐治亚州第 14 选区竞选国会议员。)随后,Dan Olson 剖析了 QAnon 信徒以及反智阴谋论者对频繁事实性错误的诡异耐受力。他们对于 Q 的预言接连落空、极其严重的自相矛盾以及物质层面完全错误的宣称毫无怨言,根本原因在于放弃事实反倒赋予了他们超越普通人的支配感。Dan Olson 尖锐地指出:“The reason they aren’t more bothered by Q constantly getting things wrong, why they aren’t more bothered by the extreme inconsistencies and outright contradictions, by the claims that are just materially wrong, is because it gives them power over others who are bound by something as weak and flimsy as reality.” 这种赤裸裸的双重标准与虚伪并非逻辑缺陷,而是其权术本质。信徒们口口声声宣称自己誓死反对腐败,却把全部希望押在一个公开展现腐败手段的人身上;他们毫不费力地为自身破例,正是因为这种“例外”赋予了他们高人一等的优越地位。Dan Olson 总结道:“They engage in wild hypocrisy as an act of domination, adhering to something demonstrably untrue out of spite, because they believe that power belongs to those with the greatest will to take it, and what greater sign of will than the ability to override truth?”在他们的逻辑中,真相不值一提,敢于践踏真相本身就是力量与绝对意志的终极证明。 信徒们将意志化作重锤,企图把客观存在的世界硬生生锤击锻造成符合他们偏执意愿的形状。那是一个被彻底剥离了复杂性与动态变化的退行世界,在那里,所见即一切,他们永远立于不败之地,而所有政敌与反对者都被彻底消音。正如 Dan Olson 在全片终局处点破的地平论隐喻:“Their will is a hammer that they are useing to beat reality itself into a shape of their choosing, a simple world where reality is exactly what it looks like through their eyes, devoid of complexity, devoid of change, where they are right and their enemies are silent. They are trying to build a Flat Earth.”随着这句结语落地,激昂压抑的配乐骤然攀升并持续铺展,伴随着片尾字幕在强烈的视听震撼中缓缓收尾。 ```mermaid flowchart TD accTitle: 阴谋论者重塑现实的意志逻辑 accDescr: 展示信徒如何利用虚伪与意志颠覆客观现实以建立扁平化世界的流程图 subgraph PowerDynamics ["虚伪作为支配手段"] A["QAnon 预言持续破产与矛盾"] --> B["信徒对事实错误无动于衷"] B --> C["挣脱现实约束获取心理优势"] C --> D["赤裸的双标与虚伪作为权力展示"] end subgraph WillOverTruth ["意志凌驾于客观真相"] D --> E["出于恶意与执念坚守虚假论调"] E --> F["将自身意志视为重锤重塑现实"] end subgraph TheFlatWorld ["终极目标:构建地平世界"] F --> G["消除所有系统复杂性与动态变化"] G --> H["使自身永远正确并彻底抹杀反对者"] H --> I["打造反智且绝对自洽的'平坦地球'"] end ``` ## Notable quotes > [01:08:07](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JTfhYyTuT44&t=4087s) 所有反动运动都处在与现实的紧张对抗中,这种对抗最终会导致心理危机,而像 QAnon 这样的信仰体系正是这场危机的终点——在这个节点上,现实本身成了敌人。 — Dan Olson > [01:01:29](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JTfhYyTuT44&t=3689s) QAnon 训练人们将事实视为结果的附庸,事实不过是用来为行动辩护而随意重排的游戏筹码。 — Dan Olson ## Mentioned Dan Olson, Folding Ideas, Hbomberguy, Philosophy Tube, Thought Slime, Some More News, Will Sommer, Alex Kaplan, Lake Minnewanka, Banff, Aylmer Canyon, Denali, Anchorage, Mark Sargent, Shane Dawson, Janet Ossebaard, Coleman Rogers, Jim Watkins, Alpalus Slyman, Corey Hurren, Justin Trudeau, Matthew Wright, Donald Trump, Marjorie Taylor Greene, QAnon, 4chan, 8chan, 8kun, Patriot's Soapbox, The Turner Diaries, White Squall, Fall of the Cabal, Loose Change ## Video description Clickbait Title: The Twist at 37 Minutes Will Make You Believe We Live In Hell More Lake Footage: https://youtu.be/y8MboQzXO1o This has taken a long time to make, and it was a very winding road, but I'm glad I did it. [68:46] Dan Olson: QAnon, what it accepts, what it believes, is driven by the outcomes it justifies. [58:46] Dan Olson: One of the most insidious elements of a confidence scam is that the victims who invested the most are often the most passionate defenders, because shame is a powerful force in the human psyche, and they can’t bear the shame of admitting they were tricked. [18:21] Dan Olson: I think it’s worth considering that the shape of the earth might actually be the least important belief of Flat Earth. [20:21] Dan Olson: In essence modern Flat Earth is an offshoot of Christianity where Jesus is a secondary figure and the primary theological concern is the true nature of the physical world, its origin, and its destiny.
[0:00] [Laid back folk music] [0:05] A few minutes outside Banff, Alberta, there’s a serpentine lake, [0:09] Lake Minnewanka. [0:10] It’s a gorgeous lake, perfect for day trips, [0:13] boating, hiking, camping, and even SCUBA diving. [0:17] It’s actually a natural lake, but not as it currently exists. [0:21] The outlet has been dammed three times, [0:23] first a small timber dam was constructed for flood control in 1895, [0:28] replaced with a hydroelectric dam in 1912, with the final and current dam [0:33] and causeway finishing construction in 1941. [0:37] Cumulatively these damming projects have raised the surface of the lake over 25 metres, [0:42] flooding the original shoreline, a small settler town, [0:46] and dozens of ancient Stoney Nakoda worksites. [0:49] A number of these old ruins, which you can see marked by buoys, [0:53] are popular cold water diving destinations. [0:56] And if you wanted to demonstrate the curve of the earth [0:59] it would be an ideal place to do it. [1:02] "So you can see that the water... [quiet sound of waves lapping the shore] [1:05] clearly has no curvature. [1:10] That the water surface is completely flat." [1:15] Wait, back up. [1:16] Why are we demonstrating the curve of the earth? [1:19] About five, six years back I got really into Flat Earth theories, [1:23] not as a believer but as an observer. [1:25] I would check in on them and watch their documentaries [1:28] and read through their memes and infographics and [1:31] generally have a jolly good time poking fun at them on Twitter. [1:35] I was, at one point, building up to making a [1:37] video on the subject when known moon-criminal [1:39] Hbomberguy produced his video on Flat Earth, [1:42] and due to YouTube Community Standards and bylaws, [1:45] section 7.2.1, the Para-Temporal Exclusion Clause, [1:49] aka “reviewer dibs” [1:51] I had to shelve my plans for a year and change. [1:54] The thing that really spurred me on originally was [1:57] a specific Flat Earth video I came across one evening in 2017. [2:01] "Flat Earth proof 1: the level" [2:05] Now, this video is not particularly noteworthy [2:08] in the scope of Flat Earth videos. [2:10] It’s an hour and a half compilation of short videos [2:13] stolen from a different, smaller Flat Earth YouTube channel. [2:16] It runs through the normal Flat Earth tropes, [2:20] such as not understanding gravity, [2:23] failing to appreciate just how big mountains really are, [2:26] and generally being really bad at math. [2:29] "There was no basis for such an explanation, [2:32] other than the desperate attempt to excuse away these critical findings." [2:36] But there is one thing that makes it special. [2:39] The host of the video does some original research [2:42] by going out to the shore of Lake Minnewanka. [2:45] "Okay, here we are at Lake Minnewanka. In Alberta." [2:51] Thing is, Lake Minnewanka is only 90 minutes away from my house. [2:56] The Flat Earth is in my own backyard. [3:00] So, hypothetically, if I did want to debunk a forgotten [3:04] four year old Flat Earth video that originally had a couple hundred views, [3:08] I could conceivably jump in my car on a clear day, [3:12] drive out to Lake Minnewanka, [3:14] and set up a camera with the longest lens I own. [3:18] But that’d be ludicrous. [3:21] [Intense music builds] [4:26] [Intense music fades] [5:01] "Okay, here we are at Lake Minnewanka. In Alberta. [5:09] And as you can see we're just less than a foot above the water's surface here. [5:20] And if we zoom in across the lake, the coastline across the lake clearly comes into focus. [5:34] So you can see that the water clearly has no curvature. [5:42] That the water surface is completely flat. [5:46] Okay, so, let’s talk real quick about the challenges involved in this kind of proof. [5:51] Going out to Minnewanka was actually a really good pick. [5:55] Because the lake is really long there’s a lot of shoreline [5:59] where you have several kilometres of unobstructed line of sight, [6:02] far enough for the curve of the earth to be meaningful, [6:05] while the mountainous terrain provides a clearly identifiable shore on the other side. [6:10] And while the lake is long enough to get these really far lines of sight, [6:14] it’s not big enough to get any meaningful tidal movements, [6:19] so all the waves are just from wind blowing across the surface, [6:23] you don’t get the big, roiling surges that you see in the ocean. [6:26] From the dam that makes up the south-west bank of Lake Minnewanka [6:30] to the rock slide on the far shore where Aylmer canyon meets the lake, [6:33] you have a line of sight of seven kilometres, [6:36] about four and a third miles, [6:37] which is far enough that the earth curves away around 3 and a half metres, [6:42] or eleven feet. [6:43] This is a kinda perfect distance. [6:46] It’s close enough for objects on the far side to still be identifiable, [6:50] while being a significant enough curve that the obstruction is perceptible. [6:55] If we punch a bunch of numbers into a curvature calculator [6:58] we can see that going from just barely above the water’s surface [7:02] to an average adult height, [7:04] the height of a hidden object at 7 kilometres [7:06] goes from 3.46 metres to only 0.4 metres. [7:11] This means that something the size of a tree at or near the water level of the lake [7:15] should appear just about whole when viewed from a standing position, [7:19] but then be visibly obscured by getting down to the surface of the water. [7:23] So the experiment should be pretty simple: [7:25] pick a landmark on the far side of the lake [7:28] and record it at the same focal length and distance [7:31] from a couple different elevations above the water’s surface. [7:34] Personally I think that his footage does, in fact, show the far shore disappearing behind the curve, [7:40] it's just very difficult to tell because the resolution is so low. [7:44] So, let’s say, for the sake of argument, [7:46] that an obscure Flat Earth video is still under your skin after several years. [7:51] What do you do? [7:53] Well, obviously, you throw a bunch of gear into the car, [7:56] drive out to the mountains, set up on the side of the lake, [7:59] and spend an hour aiming at a tree on the far shore, [8:02] keeping in mind that if you want to persuade Flat Earthers then you need to [8:06] eliminate as much ambiguity as possible, [8:09] so make sure to include an identifiable landmark in the shots [8:12] to make it easy to pinpoint exactly where you’re standing and where you’re looking. [8:17] Everything gets documented: [8:18] where was the camera sitting on the beach, [8:20] approximately how high above the surface, [8:22] even screencaps of where GPS says you’re standing. [8:26] You get the footage home, import it, [8:28] tweak the scale to make sure that objects are the same size on screen, [8:32] and line it all up with a unified horizon. [8:34] There you go, the tree disappears below the horizon of the lake. [8:38] Easy. [8:39] The earth is round. [8:45] Mmm... yeah, but if I were into Flat Earth you know what I’d point out? [8:50] That last frame, the one that’s right above the surface of the water, [8:54] it’s really hazy, ‘cus it turns out that on a thirty degree day [8:58] there’s gonna be a lot of vapour coming off the surface of the lake, [9:01] and at water level you’re trying to look [9:04] straight through seven kilometres of the stuff. [9:06] And having such a stark air temperature gradient right at the surface of the water [9:11] it increases atmospheric refraction, [9:14] resulting in the mirage effect that allows the pebble beach to [9:17] occasionally be somewhat visible, despite intersecting the tree that it’s below. [9:22] So, you know, a Flat Earther could just dismiss all of this [9:26] as just heat coming off the water. [9:28] And the shots are all locked off and disconnected. [9:31] There’s no continuity. [9:32] Who knows what shenanigans you can get up to when the camera cuts. [9:36] Plus, I mean, look at it, all that straightening and zooming in post, [9:39] how can anyone trust that the camera is set to what you say it’s set to? [9:45] So! [9:46] Jump back in the car two days later, [9:48] when it’s partly cloudy and fifteen degrees cooler. [9:50] There’s a lot more chop from the wind, but the waves are short. [9:54] It’s still a lake, we’re not dealing with big ocean swells. [9:57] Importantly, there’s functionally no visible vapour coming off the surface of the water. [10:02] And this time you make sure to bring the jib so you can [10:05] smoothly go from standing to the surface of the water in a single motion and… [10:10] [Delicate piano music] [11:20] We checked the footage when we were out there on the lake, [11:24] we looked at it on the camera just to make sure that we got something, [11:27] and so we, we knew that we got it but, [11:31] but getting home and, and seeing it in, in this detail, like this level of clarity [11:42] It's, it's, honestly it's kinda affecting me. [11:46] You know, you can see this just with the naked eye when you're out there on the beach. [11:51] You can pick a thing on the far shore and just kinda look at it and then like crouch down [12:00] and get like really close to the water's surface and you see it get, get occluded but, but [12:09] Seeing it at this magnitude, it, [12:15] it feels profound. [12:19] [Piano music] [12:48] It’s a shame it’s not enough. [12:55] The unfortunate reality of debunking Flat Earth is that it’s largely futile, [13:00] at least for the actual purpose of persuading Flat Earthers. [13:05] This isn’t me saying that we shouldn’t do it, [13:07] and there are, in fact, a bunch of reasons why we should. [13:11] I mean, first of all, it’s a lot of fun to debunk Flat Earth. [13:15] Proving that the earth is round is one of those exercises that’s not quite trivial, [13:20] it does take some amount of effort, but it’s not that hard either. [13:25] It’s in a really sweet spot. [13:27] A lot of it can be done from home with some focused research [13:30] or spending the time to do the math properly, [13:33] and other experiments just require living near a relatively big lake. [13:37] And, yeah, we should admit that it’s a lot of fun to debunk a claim like this: [13:42] "Another example from Anchorage, Alaska is Mt. McKinley. [13:46] At 130 miles away on the ball earth the 20,320 foot summit should be leaning away from the observer [13:54] And almost half covered by 9,220 feet of curved earth. [14:00] But just like Mt. Foraker, Mt. McKinley is always seen standing straight up, and visible from base to summit." [14:07] Okay, we know the distance from Anchorage to Denali, [14:11] it’s 129 miles, which, yes, should create a hidden target height of 9000 feet, [14:16] and Denali should be leaning away from the observer, [14:20] but earth has a radius of about 3965 miles and Denali is over [14:26] twenty thousand feet tall, so at minimum eleven thousand feet [14:31] of the mountain should still be visible, [14:32] leaning away from the observer by a trivial 1.8 degrees. [14:38] Like, as a controlled example here are two pyramids in Blender. [14:41] One of them is leaning away from the camera by one point eight degrees, [14:45] can you tell which one? [14:48] And the base of the mountain cluster on the Anchorage side [14:51] is forty miles closer to the observer than the peak, [14:54] and is 1600 feet above sea level. [14:57] So the end result is less of the proportional mass of the mountain is hidden [15:01] by the curve of the earth than it feels like if you’re just looking at the numbers. [15:06] Also you can’t actually see the true base of the mountain from Anchorage, [15:10] it just feels like you can because you can see so much of the mountain. [15:15] Plus to get a really good look at the mountain you’re probably going to [15:18] have to find some higher elevation yourself, [15:20] just to see over buildings, trees, hills, and other nearby obstructions, [15:24] which will further increase your line of sight over the curve. [15:28] Like just in this example here, we can see over the tallest buildings in Anchorage, so the photograph was taken from at least 300 feet up. [15:37] Bottom line is you can see Denali from very far away [15:42] because it’s really, really, really, really big, [15:48] and it was the pyramid on the right that was leaning awayv. [15:52] That’s fun to figure out. [15:54] It’s the same kind of satisfaction you get from solving a math puzzle. [15:58] Or something like this, claiming that there are no south-pointing compasses, [16:02] that’s a fantastic starter for talking about how we privilege the [16:06] global north in science in small but consistent ways, via maps or, yes, things like compasses. [16:12] Because, like, every compass is a south-pointing compass, but we don't frame it that way. [16:19] We paint one arm of the compass red and say that that points north [16:24] and we talk abut compasses in those terms, we say that, it's like, oh, this indicates north. [16:30] Even though what it's really doing is it's aligning itself with the directionality of the magnetic field [16:36] So it's indicating both north and south, it's indicating polarity, and points towards both poles simultaneously, [16:46] but that's not the language that we use to describe it. [16:50] And driving out to the mountains with a trunk full of camera gear, [16:53] spending an afternoon sitting on the shore of a gorgeous lake, [16:57] that’s just a lot of fun, [16:59] and you get a chance to show everyone something really cool about our world. [17:03] And sometimes Flat Earthers are just hilarious. [17:08] "All the movies about space and all the other movies, they all in some way push that globe model. [17:14] The globe, the image of the Beast. [17:17] Heliocentrism has nothing to do with science! [17:22] The idea that the sun is the centre was thought up by occultists. [17:27] Jesuit priests. [17:30] The Vatican. [17:31] It's not, it has nothing to do with science. [17:34] And they say that the earth orbits the sun going 66,600 miles an hour. [17:42] And if you Google how fast does the earth orbit the sun they tell you 18.5 miles per second... [17:57] [bong noise] [17:59] Hold on I'm taking a hit." [18:01] And that’s honestly the frame that most Flat Earth debunking lives within. [18:05] The nonsense claims of Flat Earthers form the starting point of a process of [18:10] puzzle solving or discussion of geography or a mini lesson in optics, [18:14] because, at the end of the day, Flat Earthers are not available to be persuaded. [18:21] [bell noises] [18:22] [Dan] So, we do need to be really careful while we're out here, this is bear country. [18:28] Not just bear country, this is serious bear country. [18:30] So we got bear bells, we got bear spray, and the thing is that right now we're at the tail end of their fall, like, [18:43] feeding season, when they get really, when they stock up for winter, [18:49] and around the lake and up into a couple of these canyons here is prime growing area for, [18:57] for the bison berries that they, that they eat to do it. [19:04] And at this point we should talk about what Flat Earth is. [19:07] Like, what Flat Earth really is. [19:11] Nominally Flat Earth is a belief that the earth isn’t a globe, [19:15] but is actually flat, a fact that has been kept from Us, [19:19] meaning normal people, [19:21] by a nebulous, powerful Them for nefarious, inscrutable purposes. [19:26] This is where profiles of Flat Earth tend to stop. [19:30] Which is fair, it’s a reasonable summary for most purposes. [19:33] I want to go beyond that, though, because I think it’s worth considering [19:37] that the shape of the earth might actually be the least important belief of Flat Earth. [19:43] Flat Earth is a syncretic Biblical belief that is both evangelical and apocalyptic. [19:49] That’s a lot of jargon, what does that mean? [19:51] Syncretism is effectively a process of creating [19:55] new texts out of the desirable parts of old texts, [19:59] regardless of the previous relationship between those texts. [20:02] Syncretism is saying two different books both mention dragons [20:06] or use the word dragon or call an antagonist “The Great Dragon”, [20:09] so they must be referring to the same thing, [20:12] they’re talking about the exact same Great Dragon, [20:15] and if we cobble together all these different stories of dragons [20:18] we can uncover the truth about dragons. [20:21] "The finger pointing at the now defunct NASA [20:24] will then turn to finger pointing at the government, who directed the whole thing. [20:29] This is where we run into some dangerous ground [20:32] involving things like the Arc of the Covenant, the Holy Grail, and the Ring of Power." [20:37] As a syncretic belief system you’ll find all sorts of fragmentary elements [20:42] lifted from seemingly disconnected and often contradictory sources, [20:45] forced into something resembling agreement, [20:49] and this spans various legitimate ancient texts as well as modern myths. [20:53] Angels, giants, world trees, and modern conspiracy staples like MK-Ultra, [20:59] the Kennedy assassination, and aliens [21:01] all have a spot at the table in some corner or another. [21:05] "Let me cut to the chase. [21:06] I'm talking about the No Forest on Flat Earth theory, right? [21:11] We see the evidence for these "trees," or as I call them, the silica pillars, all around us. [21:17] They're in movies, they're in books, and... [21:19] But look at this! This is evidence. [21:22] You know how society and the world at large would try to have you believe that this is just erosion." [21:28] Additionally support will be teased out of nearly any sacred text [21:32] that is sufficiently mythological or abstract, [21:35] such that it can be stripped of context or interpreted hyper-literally [21:39] or in some way be made to agree with the construction of their reality. [21:44] "...funny, the people that will accept the fact that the Anunnaki star creatures came to this planet [21:51] will avoid fallen angels like a plague." [21:55] "...they actually go quite far back and are found in the teachings of many mystic traditions [21:59] such and Kabbalahism and Greek and Babylonian msytery schools." [22:02] Also I should note that I’m specifically framing this as a syncretic Biblical belief, [22:07] not strictly Christian, because while the modern Flat Earth movement [22:12] clearly has deep roots in the social and lexical traditions of American Christianity, [22:17] the actual theological doctrines of Christianity are largely absent or secularized. [22:23] While the Bible is a core text, and many Flat Earth evangelists are unambiguously Christian, [22:29] the wider Flat Earth movement is largely only [22:33] interested in the parts concerning the creation and end of the world. [22:37] In essence modern Flat Earth is an offshoot of Christianity where Jesus [22:42] is a secondary figure and the primary theological concern is the true [22:46] nature of the physical world, its origin, and its destiny. [22:51] But, also, all that lives side by side with pop culture Egyptology, [22:56] mystical Gnosticism, and, I dunno what you’d call it, esoteric fictionalism, [23:03] this belief that the fantastical worlds of pop culture are a warped or [23:09] coded reflection of the true world. [23:12] "And this is where we get stories like Jack and the Beanstalk, [23:15] where he climbs up this pillar and he ends up in the land of the Titans, or the Giants." [23:20] It’s chaotic and inconsistent because there is no central authority, [23:24] no unique unifying texts, so you’ll find different commentators that take [23:29] any given point to more or less extreme conclusions, which can make it [23:34] difficult to talk about the movement as a whole, but there are elements [23:38] that remain consistent across the field of Flat Earth texts. [23:42] The world is flat and “they” are hiding that fact from you because a [23:46] Flat Earth would be irrefutable proof that we live in a divine fishbowl, and thus god is real. [23:53] This is important because, again, they are evangelical and apocalyptic. [23:57] This means, first, that orthodoxy is considered a spiritual necessity, [24:02] that there is a universal divine moral right and wrong, [24:06] and all are held to account for the rightness of their beliefs. [24:09] As a result it is the imperative of the believers to make sure as many [24:13] people are believers as possible because there are consequences for not believing. [24:19] "To be clear, and I can't stress this enough, do not start conversations with the word 'flat earth'..." [24:28] You may note, already, that this is clearly setting up an adversarial [24:31] relationship between Flat Earthers and everyone else, as anyone who denies [24:37] Flat Earth or works to debunk it is not just presenting alternative evidence [24:42] of the way the world works, but is impeding proof of god. [24:46] The second critical meaning is a belief that there is an impending [24:50] literal end to the world. [24:52] This end will occur at some unknown point in the future, [24:55] but that point is always “soon.” [24:57] Many Flat Earthers subscribe to the pop culture [25:00] version of a Biblical apocalypse, [25:02] but it doesn’t actually feature super heavily for the most part, [25:05] with most kinda just skipping past the details to the part where god shows up and proves they're right. [25:13] It is difficult to understate the impact on long term planning, [25:16] the support for policies and politicians, [25:19] that comes from the belief that at some point in the next generation or two [25:23] God will just personally show up and wrap up humanity, [25:27] like a board game being packed back into its box. [25:30] A critical component of Flat Earth’s worldview is the baked-in idea of opposition. [25:35] The enemy, the “them”, isn’t merely another group with a different idea [25:40] of what’s best for the world, or a different set of motivations [25:43] that may or may not intersect with the wellbeing of others, [25:47] they are actively seeking harm. [25:49] This is, in a way, the immune response of paranoid conspiratorial thought. [25:54] It creates an impenetrable counter to any conflict. [25:57] Any disagreement, any counter-argument, is clearly manufactured by an opposition [26:02] that isn’t merely indifferent to truth, but actively, knowingly suppressing it. [26:09] I wanted to take a look at this dimension of Flat Earth because two of my peers and friends, [26:13] H.bomberguy and Philosophy Tube, have done videos on Flat Earth [26:17] and while I don’t think they are wrong, I think their assessment of Flat Earth is incomplete. [26:24] Both of their videos function, like many others, by taking Flat Earth as a jumping off point [26:29] to discuss intersecting concepts of philosophy and science and sociology, and that’s great. [26:36] They’re good videos. [26:37] The idea that Philosophy Tube brings up, that discussions of science are a rhetorical exercise, [26:44] influenced by the social context that they are had within, [26:47] and the idea that Flat Earthers are unpersuaded by conventional rhetoric, [26:52] or perhaps persuaded into Flat Earth by unconventional rhetoric, [26:57] is one that we have grappled with in making this, [27:00] it is an extremely relevant concept. [27:02] "None of those have anything whatsoever to do with the evidence, [27:07] they just all note a failure to be rhetorically persuaded." [27:11] Harry goes to great lengths to give Flat Earthers the benefit of the doubt, [27:16] carefully isolating the very specific belief that that world is flat [27:20] and addressing the anxieties that specifically, [27:24] narrowly come up with the ontology of the physical world. [27:27] "You're right to feel that something is wrong [27:32] because something is wrong, [27:35] just maybe keep looking for the source of what that thing is [27:38] because... the Earth is not flat." [27:40] On the surface Flat Earthers share many of the same anxieties as the rest of us: [27:45] they are worried about the power structures that have immense influence over our lives, [27:50] the systems that shape the information we have access to, [27:54] and the shared fictions that society operates on [27:58] like money and rent. [28:00] But there is, perhaps, an over-willingness to treat them as harmless cranks, [28:04] as though we can start from their shared frustrations with the world, [28:08] and just gently nudge them in a more sensible direction. [28:12] These common anxieties are a shared coordinate that is, I think, [28:16] far more superficial than we would want it to be, [28:20] because while we’re all worried and skeptical of what people in power are doing, [28:25] Flat Earthers have very, very different ideas about who’s in power [28:29] and what they’re trying to do with it. [28:32] Flat Earthers are not otherwise empty vessels who believe one kooky thing. [28:37] They believe that thing because it suits their purposes. [28:41] Flat Earthers have an agenda. [28:44] The end goal of conspiratorial beliefs is to simplify reality [28:48] by attributing the high-chaos state of the world to a [28:51] singular active force or group opposed by an equally singular solution. [28:56] "Indoctrination is the way they run this world, [28:58] it's the way that they keep their lie going, [29:01] it's the way that they have passed their lie along as science [29:04] when it is nothing more than a belief. [29:07] They have a biased foundation built on a lie [29:09] and now they know they're stuck." [29:11] Their anxiety is that the world has become too complex, [29:14] that too many things are changing, [29:16] and that science and progressivism are actively malicious elements [29:20] working to obstruct the true nature of god. [29:23] Most people don’t actually believe Flat Earth because they were persuaded by shoddy evidence, [29:28] or they found other evidence to be less persuasive about the nature of the physical world, [29:33] they do so because it says something they already believe about the nature of the social world. [29:41] Flat Earth is a thing people want to believe because if it were true [29:46] it would be irrefutable proof of everything else they believe. [29:50] Flat Earth is a system that selectively delegitimizes power structures [29:54] and does so by working backwards. [29:56] Flat Earth insists that you are being lied to by “them”, [30:00] typically gays, liberals, or jews, [30:02] in order to obfuscate the existence of God and are thus not merely [30:07] an opponent of their isolationist, xenophobic policies but an enemy of righteousness itself. [30:14] "Heliocentrism is simply modern day sun worship [30:18] masquerading as a science." [30:20] They are not trying to explain the world, they are attempting to un-explain it, [30:26] because those explanations, the real explanations, have become inconvenient to their politics. [30:33] And while there is a shared sense of the world being out of whack, [30:38] the diagnosis and prescriptions are very different. [30:42] I don’t think it’s actually possible to isolate Flat Earth from the reactionary current that it swims in [30:48] and, I dunno, [30:50] for some reason in 2020 I’ve found myself with a lot less patience for [30:54] people who engage in performative rejection of empathy and evidence. [30:57] On that note, who wants to guess how Flat Earthers feel about COVID masks? [31:02] "Anyone that is voluntarily wearing a mask at this stage [31:07] is a mindless drone... who couldn't think for themselves [31:11] if their life depended on it." [31:13] The deeper, more critical issue is in the information landscape [31:17] that has given rise to new faith movements like Flat Earth. [31:20] We are in an extremely low-trust media environment as a product of [31:24] decades of active sabotage combined with a corporate, [31:28] capitalist environment that prioritizes the interests of the wealthy [31:32] or blindly pursues metric-driven success models like “engagement”. [31:36] There are a lot of legitimate reasons to distrust the media, to see them as at-best spineless [31:43] in the face of disinformation or as outright collaborators and profiteers. [31:47] The prevalence of legitimate reasons for distrust, legitimate anxieties for the future, [31:53] creates an ideal environment for groups like Flat Earth who peddle [31:56] a simplistic Us vs. Them model of the universe. [32:00] So a couple days ago I'm [32:03] tracking down some, uh, [32:07] flat earth stuff and I find myself watching [32:10] a live stream a flat earth live stream [32:13] that's mostly, um, [32:15] they're just watching basically reruns [32:19] of conference videos and [32:23] and other stuff and other flat earth stuff and I [32:27] I make the mistake of, uh, talking in chat [32:31] that- I mentioned this experiment that I did [32:35] and I don't, you know, come in as [32:37] as a like aggressive disbeliever but I'm like hey [32:42] so like the video that we were watching [32:44] the video that they were watching [32:46] was one where the guy [32:49] says like okay like there's these [32:51] experiments you can do like you can [32:53] try these yourself and you can [32:56] get the results and you can see the results [32:58] you can see that there is no curve [33:01] and... [33:05] So I'm like, hey a couple weeks ago [33:08] Ii went out to a really really big lake [33:12] and I did this test, you know, [33:16] I replicated these tests that they're saying to do [33:20] and... you know like boats and the far shore disappeared behind the curve. [33:29] and- and they say, oh well you know it [33:32] must have been [33:33] it must have been big you know water swells it was [33:36] it was swells in the waves [33:39] and i'm like nah this is a [33:42] this is a long lake but it's not a big lake [33:45] like this the water was [33:47] like really calm you know there were [33:50] no swells and they're like well you know [33:53] boats aren't that big they can they can [33:54] hide themselves in their own wake [33:56] i'm like well no this is like a tour boat [33:58] it's like four meters tall [34:00] and, and we go through like kind of a [34:04] bunch of other things where they're just [34:05] like oh well was it this and and it was [34:07] all stuff that I had controlled for [34:09] it was all stuff that I had anticipated [34:11] and factored in [34:12] and... the one guy [34:16] is just like [34:17] well... you must have done it wrong, [34:21] you did something wrong [34:24] pray about it and do it again. [34:28] And I think it's just like [34:33] you just told me to pray the curve away. [34:36] Okay, so, how did Flat Earth actually gain traction? [34:40] Like, okay, there’s a lot of different conspiracy theories out there, there’s a lot of worldviews, [34:45] both legitimate and scams, that have the same “you have been lied to” pitch. [34:50] So why Flat Earth? [34:53] Modern Flat Earth was essentially created by content algorithms [34:57] trying to maximize retention and engagement by serving users suggestions for things that are, [35:02] effectively, incrementally more concentrated versions of the thing they were already looking at. [35:08] Bizarre cranks peddling random theories are an aspect of civilization that has always been with us, [35:14] so it was inevitable that they would end up on YouTube, but the algorithm made sure they found an audience. [35:21] These systems were accidentally identifying people susceptible to conspiratorial [35:26] and reactionary thinking and sending them increasingly deeper into Flat Earth evangelism. [35:32] And within that was just a quirk of good timing, I guess. [35:35] The right cranks were churning out huge volumes of low-effort content at just the right time for YouTube [35:41] to prioritize it, and the moment it gained any traction at all the system reinforced that success. [35:48] But, you know, let’s keep some perspective here. [35:51] Flat Earth, for all the command it holds over our collective interest, [35:55] is still a very small movement. [35:58] The largest channels cap out around 150,000 subscribers, with most coming in well below that. [36:05] and this is not much in the scope of YouTube where the opportunity cost of subscription is extremely low, [36:12] and for the last couple years newer pro-flat-earth videos from these channels [36:17] have mostly been skating by with a few thousand views. [36:22] In fact Mark Sargent, the guy largely credited with popularizing Flat Earth in the YouTube era, [36:27] his videos used to get hundreds of thousands of views. [36:31] His seminal work, Flat Earth Clues, has 1.1 million views. [36:35] But he’s only had two videos break six digits since the start of 2018: [36:41] one that’s just a bootleg repost of Shane Dawson’s Flat Earth video, and one whinging about The Last Jedi. [36:48] Now, YouTube, notably, has made some changes to the algorithm to prioritize credible sources, [36:54] which lowers the ranking of Flat Earth videos even within their own sphere, [36:58] but those changes were only implemented in early 2019 when Flat Earth was already on a downslope. [37:06] More impactfully, whether it’s debunking or merely profiling, [37:10] mainstream channels talking about Flat Earth from an external perspective are just [37:16] vastly more popular than actual Flat Earth content. [37:19] So if you’re watching Flat Earth videos you are far, far more likely to be recommended [37:25] mainstream videos with millions of views over evangelist videos with hundreds. [37:30] The bottom line is that Flat Earth has been slowly bleeding support for the last several years. [37:36] Because they’re all going to QAnon. [37:39] [Peppy music] [37:55] QAnon is a fascist Biblical esoteric apocalypse cult that believes an anonymous government agent [38:02] known only as Q is leaking sensitive “above top secret” information to "Patriots” [38:08] revealing that the political and cultural opponents of Donald J. Trump, [38:11] the so-called “Deep State” and “Hollywood elite”, are the minions of “The Cabal”, [38:16] literal Satan-worshipping pedophiles who kidnap, traffic, molest, and terrorize children [38:21] in order to produce and harvest adrenochrome (a byproduct of the body processing adrenaline) [38:27] which they use to get high during the ritual worship of their lord, who is, again, Satan; [38:33] a constructed enemy so cartoonishly evil that it justifies discarding basically all human rights [38:39] in order to turn opposition to Trump into a crime in a sweeping authoritarian purge [38:44] of undesirables and political opponents called The Storm that will usher in a [38:48] golden age of peace and prosperity, or The Great Awakening. [38:53] "Q has put out there that many high level officials will soon be arrested, [38:58] and it will actually be the Drain The Swamp scenario that we have, that we have always been wanting to happen. [39:05] He says that once the corruption and the type of corruption is revealed to the American people, [39:12] it will trigger something he calls The Awakening [39:14] He says it will be like an event, something that we've never witnessed in American history. [39:20] But it will, it will cause Americans to unite behind President Trump [39:24] and his administration in order to completely clean house. [39:28] Okay, you guys, if that happens, we will be so happy. [39:32] I see all those hearts and I love it. [39:34] If that happens we will be so happy, um, I really truly pray that this is true." [39:39] And that’s not even getting into the co-morbid Pizzagate myth of hidden pedophile pizza-shop [39:44] sex dungeons that has led many followers to see any visual depiction of pizza, [39:50] the famous and popular food, as subliminal code marking the outlines of this vast conspiracy. [39:55] "Look at this, what's on his back, y'all? [39:59] Look at that. [40:02] You see that instantly appearing?" [40:04] So like, if Flat Earth is simply anxious for the end of the world, [40:09] QAnon is a straight up doomsday cult, except the form of their apocalypse is less divine and more secular, [40:15] with mass arrests and, in many versions, public executions. [40:19] It’s mostly just remixed takes on the Day of the Rope from the 1978 neo-Nazi novel The Turner Diaries. [40:25] Also sometimes it’s just literally the Day of the Rope, because they’re fascists. [40:31] If you are unfamiliar with the Turner Diaries [40:33] this is a pretty effective summary: [40:35] "The novel, told from the perspective of a [40:37] future activist in the year 2099, [40:39] outlines the diaries of a revolutionary [40:41] terrorist named Earl Turner [40:43] in the distant future of the early 90s. [40:47] It is in many respects the most hateful book ever written." [40:50] Even though it’s a distinctly American conspiracy, hinging specifically on Donald Trump’s presidency, [40:56] QAnon has found traction with far-right and authoritarian movements worldwide. [41:00] Indeed a huge part of Q’s success can be attributed to effective branding, [41:05] the kind of instant recognition that makes it appealing for groups worldwide to just localize and adapt. [41:11] QAnon is pretty easy to recognize around the internet and in real life because, [41:15] similar to Flat Earth, there is a deeply evangelical streak. [41:19] They will share their beliefs aggressively with just about everyone, and are big fans of branding. [41:25] Things marked with Q and QAnon are pretty straightforward, but slightly more covert is their rallying cry, [41:31] Where We Go One We Go All, or WWG1WGA, a line lifted from the 1996 film White Squall. [41:39] "Largo Entertainment presents: a film about loyalty." [41:45] "Where we go one..." [41:47] "We go all." [41:48] Also in recent months QAnon has been aggressively colonizing #SaveTheChildren, [41:53] a fairly generic hashtag that’s been in use for years, but QAnon has been taking over [41:58] in order to organize rallies and meetups that are more likely to draw in non-Q believers, [42:03] taking very real cases of child abuse and using them as the bridge to introduce their [42:09] entirely fictional cases of child abuse and the bulk of Q beliefs. [42:14] "The messaging here is so insidious [42:16] is that I'm for children and if you don't come out here [42:20] you don't love children as much as I do. [42:22] I think we're going to see a lot more of this, [42:24] he doesn't lead with the pizzagate stuff [42:26] he doesn't lead with QAnon, [42:27] he leads with save the children and then [42:29] the pizzagate stuff has sort of slipped underneath." [42:32] While QAnon originated in 2017 on 4chan via cryptic, nonsensical anonymous posts monikered “Q drops”, [42:39] and even though new Q drops arrive regularly on the 8chan derivative rebrand 8kun, [42:44] QAnon is, at this point, largely self-sustaining via social media. [42:49] QAnon has become a haven for just about every true believer in bizarre conspiracies, [42:55] anti-science movements, fad diets, and the grifters who prey on them, [42:59] what’s called a “big tent conspiracy” because virtually any other conspiracy can fit inside it. [43:05] This is, as we discussed, already something of a feature of Flat Earth: [43:09] many new age, mystical, and political conspiracies are compatible with Flat Earth, and Q is that, but bigger. [43:17] Janet Ossebaard’s two and a half hour YouTube series Fall of the Cabal, [43:21] which is in many ways to QAnon what Loose Change was to the 9/11 Truther conspiracy in both format and in function, [43:29] is mostly just a collection of other, mostly racist conspiracies [43:34] that she claims are all ultimately QAnon. [43:37] "Okay, let's have a look at the migrant caravan. [43:40] Do you realize that these foreskins are actually sold? [43:44] ...President obama received the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize [43:48] only months after his inauguration. [43:51] Why for god's sake? He came from nowhere and had [43:55] achieved nothing at the time." [43:57] Hell, even 9/11 trutherism is compatible with Q. [44:01] "9/11 [44:03] whereas one bird can cause terrible [44:06] damage to a plane [44:07] on 9/11 two planes managed to cut [44:10] through steel a third plane mysteriously [44:14] disappeared in a building [44:16] and number four plunged into the earth [44:18] without leaving [44:20] any debris or bodies. [44:21] The planes were [44:22] piloted by [44:23] terrorists who only had had a few flying [44:27] lessons in a small Cessna [44:33] [eerie music] [44:36] See, okay, just a bit more groundwork, because that sounds silly. [44:39] QAnon trusts military intelligence and reveres military might and shares a lot of pro-cop, [44:45] thin blue line type sentiment, while they distrust the civilian intelligence agencies. [44:50] Now, the standard 9/11 truther conspiracy is that Bush orchestrated 9/11 [44:55] in order to create a crisis that would allow him to implement the Patriot Act, [44:58] create Homeland Security, and justify a couple wars. [45:02] But QAnon, they imagine the Patriot Act as a tool that Trump is using to dismantle the Deep State, [45:07] and they love Homeland Security because DHS is loyal to Trump, [45:10] so the Q narrative of 9/11 focuses on the Pentagon, [45:14] that Bush was a Cabal member who orchestrated 9/11 in order to cover for a precision [45:19] missile attack on the Pentagon in an attempt at covering up Cabal activities. [45:22] None of that makes sense, don’t try to understand it through the lens of facts, it’s all about loyalty. [45:28] One of the oft-discussed elements of these types of [45:30] groups is the way that fact checking is [45:32] often used as a kind of filter [45:34] so if you sit down to watch Ossebaard’s [45:36] fall of the cabal and you're the kind of person who [45:39] is inclined to fact check and is curious about the world [45:42] and is you know interested in thinking for themselves and thinking about things [45:46] analytically and from a scientific standpoint [45:49] you're probably not going to get very far [45:52] into it because it comes out so fast and [45:56] so quick with things that are going to make you, like, [45:58] pause and stop and, like, gather your thoughts on explaining [46:03] why they're wrong... [46:05] "First of all, give you a short overview of things [46:08] that made me go hmm. [46:10] Did you know that these fires forgot to burn [46:12] trees that they were capable of cutting through houses-" [46:17] Like, yes extremely [46:20] hot fast-moving fires will just [46:23] kind of burn through half a house. [46:25] 'That they were able to [46:26] lift cars tilt them and smash them down." [46:30] Yeah that's what happens when the gasoline [46:33] in the car's tank ignites and explodes. [46:37] "That they burn trees from the inside out." [46:40] Oh, this is a really cool phenomenon actually [46:42] so if you have a tree that's [46:44] dead or has a weak spot in the bark or [46:46] has been attacked by certain types of fungus [46:49] the interior of the tree, uh, gets exposed [46:52] and is potentially very dry and [46:54] much more flammable than the protective [46:57] bark on the outside of the tree [46:59] and so the fire is able to penetrate to [47:01] the interior of the tree and burn it from the inside out. [47:04] It's- it's really cool and you're [47:07] turning it into conspiratorial nonsense. [47:11] "Things that made me go hmmm." [47:14] A challenge in making this is that the Q movement evolves very quickly and is basically an ongoing story, [47:20] so it’s impossible to give a summary of the full scope that won’t be out of date as soon as the video goes live. [47:27] Not only that, but I have different dimensions of the phenomenon that I want to focus on, [47:32] so just know that I’m skipping hours and hours and hours of discussion. [47:37] There’s also a lot of stuff that we just don’t know for sure, [47:40] like the identity of the actual person or people who write and post the Q drops. [47:46] There’s some evidence that the original Q author was Coleman Rogers, [47:50] the founder of Patriot’s Soapbox and one of the first people to popularize “decoding” as a social activity. [47:56] In a 2018 NBC News profile of the movement, this claim is acknowledged and supported by evidence like [48:02] Rogers apparently logging into 8chan as Q on stream [48:06] or knowing about “authentic” Q drops that weren’t posted with the Q account, [48:10] "You know what? I got a question for you, Pam: how come on my system I don't get that picture?" [48:16] "The, uh, the Google bike rack thing?" [48:20] "Yeah." [48:21] "I- it's not showing up on the, um, the Q [48:25] post uh aggregator sites because Q posted [48:29] I think by accident as an anon..." [48:31] But a lot of that evidence was poorly archived and has since been deleted. [48:36] There’s also a compelling argument that the Q account has changed hands completely at least once, [48:42] and many people believe that Jim Watkins, the owner of 8chan, or at least someone very close to Watkins, [48:48] is the current author of Q and has been since November 2019 when 8chan re-launched as 8kun. [48:55] That re-launch represents a break in continuity that makes it basically impossible to verify [49:01] one way or the other with the information that we have access to. [49:05] And to a point it doesn’t matter. [49:08] Whether or not Rogers or Watkins are or were the anonymous authors of the Q drops, [49:15] they are publicly collaborators and enablers of the movement, and benefit from it in money and influence. [49:23] So while I want to focus mainly on the bigger picture, [49:26] the underlying philosophical beliefs that drive QAnon regardless of the specific form those beliefs take, [49:32] would be irresponsible to not talk about how this is manifesting in actual actions, [49:37] because, ultimately, these are the stakes. [49:40] For example, a notable sub-group that QAnon has drawn in are unstable parents who are embroiled in custody battles, [49:47] sometimes pre-existing and sometimes as a direct result of their involvement in QAnon driving their partners away. [49:54] Someone who’s already on really shaky emotional ground starts getting super into QAnon, [49:59] it’s all they want to talk about, and they begin to fixate on comorbid anti-vax conspiracies [50:05] or bleach-treatment conspiracies, and they start giving their children bleach [50:09] or put them on an all-meat diet. [50:10] Someone, either their partner or extended family or child protective services, steps in. [50:16] These individuals, believing that they are in the right, [50:18] convince themselves that the Cabal or the Deep State has targeted them and their children [50:23] in retribution for “knowing too much”, the act of intervention becomes further proof of [50:29] their correctness because "of course" that’s what the Deep State would do to protect their secrets. [50:34] On June 11th, 2020, Alpalus Slyman attempted to kidnap his five children in [50:39] a mental breakdown that led to a 110 mile-per-hour chase with authorities [50:44] that Slyman live streamed portions of to Facebook. [50:48] "Donald Trump I need a miracle, or something, somebody, QAnon help me." [50:51] [distressed woman yelling] "Nobody ain't gonna help you!" [50:53] "QAnon help me." [50:54] On July 2nd, 2020, Corey Hurren crashed a pickup truck through the gates of 1 Sussex Drive, Ottawa, [51:00] the home of Canada’s Governor General and temporary residence of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, [51:04] and stalked the grounds with a pistol and rifle before being apprehended by RCMP officers. [51:10] Shortly before the incident Hurren sent a letter to his supervisor in the Canadian Rangers [51:15] claiming that he was motivated to stop Trudeau from "turning Canada into a Communist Dictatorship". [51:20] Over the months prior Hurren posted various QAnon and general conspiracy memes to his Instagram account, [51:26] including a white rabbit meme with the description text [51:29] “Has anyone else been following “Q” and the “White Rabbit” down the rabbit hole [51:33] and how this all relates to the Corona virus/COVID-19 situation? [51:38] Lots of coincidences in all the “Q” posts if this turns out to be a “Nothingburger”. [51:42] #QAnon #Anons #FollowtheWhiteRabit #Adrenochrome #AdrenochromeHarvesting [51:46] #FrazzleDrip #PodestaEmails #SpiritCooking #Molech #SethRich #PedoWood [51:51] #Pedogate #Pedovores #Pizzagate #EpsteinIsland #PedoIsland [51:54] #IsaacKappyDidntKillHimself #ThesePeopleAreSick #Cabal #WWG1WGA [52:00] #Redpill #Spygate #DeepState #TheStorm #TheStormIsHere #TheStormIsUponUs [52:04] #TrustThePlan #coronavirus #covid19 #coincidence” [52:09] In June, 2018, QAnon believer Matthew Wright barricaded the Hoover Dam bridge with an armoured truck for over an hour, [52:15] demanding that authorities release the OIG report, [52:18] a document that Q believers think holds evidence of the thousands of sealed indictments that [52:23] they believe Trump’s administration has filed against Cabal members. [52:27] [journalist] "During the pandemic the QAnon movement [52:31] has been, appears to be gaining a lot of followers [52:34] can you talk about what you think about that [52:36] and what you have to say [52:38] to people who are following this movement right now?" [52:40] "Well, I don't know [52:41] much about the movement other than I understand they like me very much. [52:44] These are people that don't like seeing [52:46] what's going on in [52:48] places like Portland and places like Chicago [52:52] and New York and other cities and states [52:56] and, uh, I've heard these are people that [52:59] love our country and they just don't like seeing it..." [53:01] This is the radicalizing effect of cults like Q: [53:04] it attracts and enables people with personalities that are already inclined towards these kinds of actions, [53:10] and gives them a reason to take it further. [53:13] The reason the fragmentary, shoddy, and contradictory ideas of Flat Earth are so easy [53:18] for most adherents to accept are because they’re principally interested in the broad strokes, [53:23] and, indeed, the broad strokes are all that matters. [53:26] This is really easy to demonstrate for Q. [53:30] The gap-filling that happens in between is largely entertainment that keeps people engaged [53:35] but rarely sticks long enough to form a doctrinal pillar. [53:39] For example the idea that the Cabal is harvesting adrenochrome has been [53:43] floating around in the Q lore since late 2017, but only really surged in popularity in 2020, [53:50] and there’s no guarantee that it’ll last even to the point that this video is published. [53:55] Q support for bleach drinking and hydroxychloroquine as COVID treatments have [54:00] stuck around reliably for months, but could be dropped any day now, [54:04] and followers wouldn’t see any contradiction in that at all. [54:06] The Q lore is highly unstable and extremely fluid. [54:10] This is actually part of how people are pulled in and kept engaged, [54:14] as there’s a soap opera or ARG-esque immediacy that brings people back day after day [54:20] to get caught up on the latest developments, the latest theories, [54:24] and to all pitch in on trying to decode the latest Q drop, [54:27] which is the colloquial term for what are effectively the belief’s foundational texts. [54:31] These “Q drops”, and the smaller “Q crumbs”, are thousands of deliberately vague messages, [54:37] written in a mess of codewords and meaningless word salad, [54:41] and it is then left to adherents to unravel and establish meaning by consensus. [54:46] So, for example, Q Drop 142, from November 12th, 2017 reads: [54:51] "How did Soros replace family ‘y’? [54:53] Who is family ‘y’? [54:55] Trace the bloodlines of these (3) families. [54:57] What happened during WWII? [54:58] Was Hitler a puppet? [55:00] Who was his handler? [55:01] What was the purpose? [55:02] What was the real purpose of the war? [55:03] What age was GS? [55:05] What is the Soros family history? [55:06] What has occurred since the fall of N Germany? [55:09] Who is A. Merkel? [55:10] What is A. Merkel’s family history? [55:12] Follow the bloodline. [55:13] Who died on the Titanic? [55:14] What year did the Titanic sink? [55:16] Why is this relevant? [55:17] What ‘exactly’ happened to the Titanic? [55:19] What ‘class of people’ were guaranteed a lifeboat? [55:22] Why did select ‘individuals’ not make it into the lifeboats? [55:25] Why is this relevant? [55:26] How do we know who was on the lifeboats (D or A)? [55:29] How were names and bodies recorded back then? [55:31] When were tickets purchased for her maiden voyage? [55:33] Who was ‘specifically’ invited? [55:35] Less than 10. [55:36] What is the FED? [55:37] What does the FED control? [55:38] Who controls the FED? [55:40] Who approved the formation of the FED? [55:41] Why did H-wood glorify Titanic as a tragic love story? [55:45] Who lived in the movie (what man)? [55:47] Why is this relevant? [55:48] Opposite is true. [55:49] What is brainwashing? [55:50] What is a PSYOP? [55:51] What happened to the Hindenburg? [55:52] What really happened to the Hindenburg? [55:54] Who died during the ‘accident’? [55:56] Why is this relevant? [55:57] What are sheep? [55:58] Who controls the narrative? [55:59] The truth would put 99% of people in the hospital. [56:02] It must be controlled. [56:03] Snow White. [56:03] Iron Eagle. [56:04] Jason Bourne (CIA/Dream). [56:07] Q [56:07] What does that mean? [56:09] Honestly, whatever the hell you want it to mean, or more accurately, whatever you need it to mean. [56:15] We are, we're past lm8 [56:20] and we're coming up on lm9 and [56:22] and, uh... gosh i'm not- [56:27] I haven't checked the I haven't checked the- [56:30] I haven't checked the map for exactly where we are [56:35] uh, but we're real close and [56:37] I'm looking off to the right now in just [56:40] every single one of these poplar trees [56:42] I'm thinking like, oh could that be it? [56:44] Is that it? Is that the one? [56:47] The “official” Q drops are verified on the image boards by the use of a tripcode, [56:52] a system that image boards use to show that anonymous posts are coming from the same user, [56:57] or at least users who share the tripcode password, [57:00] but ideas that gain traction in the conspiracy don’t even need to come from the Q drops [57:05] or be implied by the Q drops. [57:08] The adrenochrome conspiracy is a kind of free radical idea that’s been bouncing around niche cultures for decades, [57:15] and is essentially a remix of the centuries old anti-Semitic conspiracy of Blood Libel, [57:21] but neither have ever been mentioned by Q in an official Q drop. [57:26] The less-vague Q predictions, citing specific dates and outcomes, [57:30] have universally not come true, [57:32] "Instead of detailing every single one [57:34] we'll just put a list on the screen of [57:36] all the dates that QAnon [57:38] said there was going to be mass arrests [57:40] or some kind of exposure [57:42] of Trump's enemies in the Deep State or [57:46] just [57:46] anything happening at all [57:48] only to have nothing happen." [57:50] But as with most failed doomsday predictions, this isn’t really a hangup. [57:55] Because all of that is just sandwich filler to justify their support [57:59] for authoritarian policies directed at people they already don’t like. [58:04] In fact one of the core anxieties, from the perspective of QAnon, [58:08] is that Donald Trump hasn’t been authoritarian enough, [58:12] and the multi-layered Deep State game of 4D chess is their explanation for why [58:16] he has not simply eliminated his enemies and Made America Great Again. [58:21] Likewise, every failed Q prediction simply becomes reinforcing evidence of just how powerful, [58:27] and thus dangerous, the mythological Deep State really is. [58:31] "President Trump and the entire Q team [58:33] are working out a plan [58:35] that has been in the making for the past 20 years [58:38] a plan so all-encompassing it took this [58:41] long to calculate [58:43] every step, every move to perfection." [58:46] The dissonance of Q is that the faithful were supposed to be the beneficiaries of Trump’s strongman, [58:52] nativist, xenophobic, anti-progressive campaign, but they haven’t, [58:57] because he’s a selfish grifter who used them for their political convenience, [59:01] and thus despite all his promises their lives have generally gotten materially worse under his criminal presidency. [59:08] That is, emotionally, psychologically, a lot to deal with, [59:12] and Q gives that disappointment shape and form, encouraging believers to Trust The Plan. [59:18] It’s deeply sad, and the increasingly convoluted explanations for why followers should discard [59:24] their own rational instincts and Trust The Plan create a self-radicalization cycle. [59:30] One of the most insidious elements of a confidence scam is that the victims who invested the most [59:36] are often the most passionate defenders, because shame is a powerful force in the human psyche, [59:41] and they can’t bear the shame of admitting they were tricked. [59:44] This results in Q believers growing more and more passionate, getting more and more involved, [59:50] and further isolating themselves from others, particularly people who push back against their evangelism. [59:56] The end result is Q believers only socializing with other Q believers. [60:01] The COVID pandemic, already a source of anxiety and isolation for virtually everyone, [60:06] has further accelerated the process, with the ranks being bolstered by more and more people who [60:12] already subscribed to fringe medical or conspiratorial beliefs, who are deeply unstable, [60:18] or who are just generally amenable to authoritarianism if they stand to benefit. [60:23] And, of course, grifters. [60:25] So, so many grifters. [60:28] Q has managed to attract all the normal types of grifters, [60:31] from policy hacks who see the movement as a political body that they can try to steer [60:35] to either bolster their own support or hurt their opposition, [60:38] to pundits who benefit from the traffic Q brings in, to quick buck dropshippers, to regular old conmen. [60:45] In fact whether you’re looking to just make some cash selling Q-branded merchandise [60:49] or if you want to build an entire career on YouTube as a Q decoder, [60:53] there’s money to be made off QAnon. [60:55] Now, all this isn’t to say that everyone’s either completely on board or a full blown grifter, [61:00] that there aren’t casual posters or that people don’t break out of these groups. [61:05] A lot of people flirt with conspiracies for periods of time because they’re entertaining, they’re exciting. [61:11] The idea that the world is no more complex than a long running TV show is appealing, [61:18] and it’s fun to think that there’s somewhere you can go for a narrator’s eye view of reality. [61:23] There’s an emotional security in believing that the world will only ever be brought [61:29] to the dramatic edge of peril before a clever twist saves the day. [61:33] A lot of casual investigators dabble in the fun and then bounce off after run-ins with insufferable believers, [61:40] disruptions like a website outage, or just getting distracted by a new video game. [61:45] However this is a radicalization pipeline, [61:48] and a lot of people don’t bounce off once they come across something distatestful. [61:53] People start with their generalized sense of unease with the world, their undefined anxieties, [61:59] and a thing like QAnon comes alone with a lot of answers. [62:03] Bizarre answers. Inconsistent answers. [62:06] But a lot of them. [62:07] "In every speech and every tweet he used codes [62:11] for the QAnons to pick up on. [62:12] He used spelling errors such as 'covfefe' instead of coffee [62:17] referring to a new act about the saving [62:19] of all social media posts by the president." [62:22] They come in so fast and so confidently that it’s persuasive. [62:26] It’s not cohesive, but there’s so much of it. [62:29] As believers get more invested they spend time decoding, or watching others decode, [62:34] and they become more accustomed to integration and synthesization. [62:38] With QAnon this phase consists mostly of constantly rearranging and rewriting existing and evolving lore [62:45] in order to preserve desired outcomes, and gradually those outcomes, [62:49] the only thing that remains consistent, become the fixed point in someone’s life. [62:54] That’s the thing that QAnon trains you to do, to see specific outcomes, [62:58] The Storm and the Great Awakening, [63:00] as the only thing that really matters, and everything else is mutable. [63:05] QAnon trains people to see facts as subservient to outcomes, [63:09] that facts are just game pieces you rearrange to justify actions. [63:15] This is how someone starts off with a vague, justified distrust of the financial relationships [63:20] between elected officials and health insurance companies, [63:23] and comes out the other end believing that coronavirus is spread by 5G networks [63:28] and the only solution is a fascist crackdown on Black Lives Matter protesters and a war with China. [63:34] Increasingly one of the biggest reasons why people leave Q is because they become frustrated [63:39] with the lack of results and jump right into hardcore accelerationist groups. [63:43] This is something to be really worried about because, well, they’re hardcore accelerationists, [63:49] and it’s the precursor to what’s called “forcing the end.” [63:53] This is where members of a doomsday cult, disillusioned with the fact that doomsday hasn’t arrived, [63:59] synthesize the belief that it’s their responsibility to create the circumstances that will allow doomsday to occur. [64:07] Those circumstances are almost always death, plague, ecological collapse, and societal instability. [64:14] And for people who have steeped themselves in these ideas, [64:17] that there is a foretold day of reckoning that is directly contingent on a specific man’s access to political power, [64:25] and been told over and over and over again to suppress disillusionment [64:29] with the lack of desired results and “trust the plan”, [64:32] it is a very small leap to deciding that The Plan all along was Q training them [64:40] to be the instrument of The Storm and now they need to take matters into their own hands. [64:45] "We have this timeline here, the mass arrests they can't act too quickly [64:49] because they have to have certain assets in place like judges, you know, other countries [64:52] have to be ready to go because this is going to be a global takedown. [64:55] And so, and then you have another window over here [64:57] where it's like it's they wait too long [64:59] and so we're in between this period of [65:01] too soon and too long before we make the mass arrests. [65:03] And what's happening is, what the lord has shown me [65:06] is that if they wait too long [65:08] which I don't think they will, but if they do [65:10] is that it could be another Mogadishu or another Benghazi where the patriots will rise up [65:14] and say enough's enough they will take [65:16] matters into their own hands [65:17] and they will drag their dead bodies through the streets. [65:19] They will go to these politicians houses or offices and drag them out, [65:22] Okay because again we want to pray against that [65:24] but I have to put that warning out there I've been sitting on this for a year [65:27] because we're coming to the pinnacle [65:29] here where they're gonna have to act at [65:30] some point because the people are not [65:32] asking for justice they're demanding it. [65:34] So the government has to act now if they [65:36] need to buy more time because they don't have the assets in place [65:39] quite yet they need to make probably one [65:41] or two high-level arrests high-profile arrests perp walk them on national television [65:46] so that people will see that justice is [65:48] going to be done. Where I think they've [65:50] got to make the arrest before January if they're going to make them this year [65:53] because if he arrests anyone after January when campaign season starts it's [65:56] going to make it look like he's just [65:57] arresting those that oppose him [65:58] Coming at all this from the outside, it’s really, really easy to get frustrated with Q, [66:03] to get frustrated talking about Q or trying to explain Q, because there’s so much noise in their messaging, [66:10] so much chaos, that it’s really easy to get hung up on the sensational stuff, [66:14] to fixate on the beliefs like adrenochrome or the Cabal. [66:18] "Statues of Moloch, an expression of the devil, are now watching over several American cities" [66:25] If you want to cut through the noise, it’s this: [66:28] the unifying theme is a desire for a sort of restorative authoritarianism, [66:33] for a strong man to come in and forcibly put everything back “where it belongs.” [66:39] Everything else is aesthetic. [66:41] Like Flat Earth, there is a sympathetic nugget in the anxiety that the world has gotten too complex, [66:47] that things are spinning out of control, but the Q analysis of the problem [66:52] is that the fault lies with the people outlining the complexity. [66:57] The purpose of cosmologies like Q, like Flat Earth, is to simplify the world. [67:03] And, I know, that sounds ridiculous. [67:05] The irony here is that this isn’t all that far off base. [67:09] Now, not this specific example, the QAnon map of global politics is almost pure nonsense, [67:15] but the shape of it isn’t. [67:18] If you were to map out the political landscape of the world it would look a lot like this: [67:23] thousands of political entities, big and small, all with their own goals, values, and incentives, [67:28] navigating an equally complex series of conflicts, alliances, and rivalries in competition [67:34] for power, fame, or limited resources. [67:36] So how is something like this making the world simpler? [67:40] Because it takes all this, the chaos of millions of individuals trying to reshape the world in their own way, [67:47] for good or ill, and turns it into a single entity. [67:51] All the world’s complexity, all the chaos, it’s all the fault of one group. [67:56] Not an ideology, not a worldview, not historical inertia, [68:00] not anything so nebulous as the way we think about the world. [68:03] A single, tangible, identifiable group with a written agenda. [68:07] These types of conspiratorial beliefs, for all their complex cosmologies, [68:12] exist in opposition to structural challenges, [68:15] and a lot of people get involved because they resent structural criticism. [68:20] Structural criticism poses that we are the way we are because of complicated forces, [68:26] some intentional and many not, that have compounded and morphed over generations. [68:31] There’s no plan, no template, and no goal. [68:35] The world won’t just magically morph into a better place as a function of its existence: [68:40] we are responsible for confronting the past, fixing the present, and shaping the future. [68:46] QAnon, and not just QAnon, many people, many many people, want to believe that things [68:52] are the way they are because someone has deliberately crafted it to be that way, [68:57] that there is a natural order to the world, and we need to just trust the plan. [69:02] Climate scientists, trans and queer activists, women’s rights, reproductive autonomy, [69:06] racial justice, protests against police brutality, protests against generational wealth inequality, [69:12] against the increasing transfer of the public good into the hands of [69:16] corporations for privatization and exploitation, all of these are interlocking, systemic issues. [69:23] These are, inarguably, disruptions of the status quo, confrontations of [69:27] deep-rooted complexities that intersect the lives and futures of billions of people. [69:33] And it is that disruption, not the underlying injustices, not the underlying conflicts, [69:39] that make QAnon anxious, that make QAnon feel like the world has gotten too complex. [69:45] They don’t want those complexities to exist, and by talking about them you make them exist. [69:51] It’s a form of magical thought. [69:53] Talking about police brutality wills police brutality into existence. [69:59] A disruption of the status quo is seen as a disruption of the natural order. [70:05] The problem they see is that no one has made those people shut up. [70:10] That is what they want: someone to come in and make those people shut up and go away, [70:15] to put things back “where they belong”. [70:18] Now, this is not a philosophy unique to QAnon, [70:21] it’s the lifeblood of all reactionary movements. [70:24] They are, of course, in conflict with facts. [70:28] Global warming, to pull one example, is real, and an existential threat to civilization. [70:33] That’s just a fact. [70:35] It wasn’t willed into existence by people talking about it, [70:38] it isn’t over-tuned leftists looking for patterns in clouds, [70:42] it’s the byproduct of dumping carbon dioxide into the atmosphere on an industrial scale for two hundred years. [70:48] And there is a temptation to engage on that level, [70:52] to confront all the material ways in which they are just wrong, and it largely does not work. [71:00] And what’s unique about QAnon is the degree to which it doesn’t work, [71:05] the degree to which the movement is immune to evidence. [71:09] All reactionary movements are in tension with reality, [71:12] a tension that eventually results in psychological crisis, [71:16] and belief systems like QAnon are the endpoint of that crisis, [71:20] the point where reality itself becomes an enemy. [71:23] Because ultimately it’s not about facts, it’s about power. [71:27] QAnons are not otherwise empty vessels who believe one whacky thing. [71:32] They have an agenda. [71:33] QAnon, what it accepts, what it believes, is driven by the outcomes it justifies. [71:40] "The Democratic National Convention is thinking about bringing Bernie Sanders back to run for president in 2020. [71:46] Can you imagine? Like, what if he gets elected? [71:49] I seriously hope not. [71:51] Hopefully all this stuff goes down and there is an awakening and everyone lines up behind President Trump." [71:56] "I'm fed up with the attacks on President Trump, [71:59] I think he's the greatest president that we'll have in our lifetimes, [72:02] and I'm grateful for all he's doing, [72:04] and I'm proudly running for congress in Georgia's 14th district." [72:08] The reason they aren’t more bothered by Q constantly getting things wrong, [72:13] why they aren’t more bothered by the extreme inconsistencies and outright contradictions, [72:18] by the claims that are just materially wrong, [72:21] is because it gives them power over others who are bound by something as weak and flimsy as reality. [72:29] They claim to be against corruption while hanging their hopes on an openly corrupt man, [72:33] and that naked hypocrisy is the point. [72:36] They will effortlessly carve out an exception because it makes them exceptional. [72:41] They engage in wild hypocrisy as an act of domination, [72:45] adhering to something demonstrably untrue out of spite, [72:49] because they believe that power belongs to those with the greatest will to take it, [72:54] and what greater sign of will than the ability to override truth? [72:59] Their will is a hammer that they are useing to beat reality itself into a shape of their choosing, [73:06] a simple world where reality is exactly what it looks like through their eyes, [73:11] devoid of complexity, devoid of change, where they are right and their enemies are silent. [73:17] They are trying to build a Flat Earth. [73:22] [Intense music builds] [74:05] [Intense music] [75:42] [Intense music fades]
